  • In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of imagery thinking in the processes of generating analogy of seventh grade science-gifted students in terms of the information-processing of imagery. The analyses of the results revealed that science-gifted students' information-processing of imagery in the processes of generating analogy consisted of image generation, image operation, and image representation. The types of imagery used by science-gifted students were classified into perception imagery, memory imagery, and imagination imagery, and there were some differences in the patterns of information-processing of imagery. In the bases of these results, we suggested the information-processing model of imagery by the types of imagery used in generating analogy. The results of this study may provide useful implication to develop effective methods for a strategy of generating analogy emphasizing the interaction between analogy thinking and imagery thinking which promotes imagery thinking of science-gifted students.

  • The research shows the experiment results according to the combustion characteristics and configuration of the linear generator of powerpack for the generating power applying the 2-stroke compact linear engine. The powerpack used in this paper consists of 2-stroke linear engine, linear generator and air compressor parts. For identifying the combustion characteristics and generating power of linear engine, some parameters were varied sucha as electric load, fuel input calorie, spark timing delay and equivalence ratio. Also generating power was confirmed at each operation conditions, when the air gap length of linear generator part was changed as each 1.0 mm and 2.0 mm. During the all operations, intake air was inputted under the wide open throttle. Mass flow rate of air and fuel was changed using mass flow controller, after these were premixed by premixture device, and then premixed gas was supplied directly into each cylinder. As a result, piston frequency and combustion characteristics were different at each conditions according to parameters affecting the combustion such as fuel input calorie, resistive load, spark timing delay and equivalence ratio. Consequently, these had an effect on generating power.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the type of thinking and generating processes of causal questions which were generated in preservice elementary teachers' observing activities. To find the generating processes of causal questions, 4 observing tasks, the task of grapes in soda, the candlelight, the celery, and the rock tasks, were administered to 7 preservice elementary teachers majoring in science education. The results of this study were as follows: The types of thinking in generating explicans exploration questions were classified as 8 types and explicans verification questions were classified as 9 types. The generating processes of explicans exploration questions were classified as 6 steps and explicans verification questions were classified as 5 steps. The results of this study may be used as a teaching strategy for guiding the direction and the method of scientific questions and developing the teaching-teaming programs that help student to generate scientifc questions.

  • This research attempts to extract the factors that generate scientific interest, and verify the effect of extracted factors on the generation of scientific interest in middle school students' observation activity on life phenomenon. In order to analyze interest-generating factors, observation programs were applied four times in the science class of 3rd grade middle school students. And an interview was conducted towards students who had strong scientific interest among students who participated in the observation activity. After classifying the interview results according to the types, and 21 interest-generating factors were extracted. Interest-generating factors were classified into 5 categories; the characteristics of the observation object, the characteristics of the observation activity, the characteristics of the observation result, the characteristics of the observer, and the characteristics of the extrinsic factor. It was verified that interest-generating factors have an effect on the generation of scientific interest in the observation activity. First of all, in order to confirm whether the extracted generation factors would have an effect on the generation of interest in observation activity, as survey of interest-generating factors was drawn up. The observation activity program of 4 times' volume was applied towards third grade middle school students, and survey paper on interest-generating factor was input. Analysis result showed that factors have effect on the generation of interest. That is, it was confirmed that extracted interest-generating factor has a significant effect on the generation of scientific interest. The cause analysis on the uninteresting observation activity was possible, and it would play an essential role in developing an interesting observation activity.

  • The study aimed to investigate elementary school gifted students' hypothesis-generating ability and characteristics of hypotheses and to analyze the correlation between hypothesis-generating ability and meta-cognition. Nineteen students enrolled in a science gifted education center affiliated with a university in 2013 were selected as research subjects. An instrument of open ended items about hypothesis generating was developed and administered to students, and their meta-cognition as well as their preferred science teaching method were examined. Hypotheses generated by students were classified into two categories: scientific and non-scientific hypotheses, and then a closer analysis was conducted on characteristics of non-scientific hypotheses. It was found that 47% (18 out of 38 hypotheses) was scientific ones showing that elementary school gifted students in science in this study presented low level of ability in generating hypothesis. It was also found that non-scientific hypotheses frequently showed characteristics of uncertain in causality or impossible to verify relationships. Furthermore, differences in hypothesis-generating ability and characteristics of hypotheses were appeared in conditions whether inquiry questions and variable identification process were given or not. Students showed high abilities in hypothesis generating and variable identifying when inquiry questions and variable identification process were given. Compared to previous research results, students in the study showed high level of meta-cognition and tendency of utilizing monitoring strategy more than planning and regulating. In ill-structured conditions that students themselves find inquiry questions and identify variables, a significant (p<.05) correlation appeared between hypothesis generating ability and meta-cognition and a high level of correlation between planning and regulating strategies. It was also found that differences existed in hypothesis-generating ability and preferred science teaching methods between students with high level and those with low level of meta-cognition; and students with low level of meta cognition showed difficulties in generating hypothesis and identifying variables.

  • Let p be a prime and $f(z)=\Sigma_{n}a(n)q^n$ be a weakly holomorphic modular function for ${\Gamma}^*_0(p)$ with a(0) = 0. We use Bruinier and Funke's work to find the generating series of modular traces of f(z) as Jacobi forms.

  • Three approximation methods for generating outcomes on Poisson random variables are discussed. A comparison is made to determine which method requires the least computer execution time and to determine which is the most robust approximation. Results of the comparison study suggest the method to choose for the generating procedure depends on the mean value of Poisson random variable which is being generated.

  • We classify self-converse oriented trees into two types, namely, bicentral self-converse oriented trees and central ones, according to their centers and characterize these tow types. Using characterizations and Polya enumeration theorem, we derive the ordinary generating function for self-converse oriented trees.
