  • The paper presents development of a Hardware-In-the-Loop simulation (HILS) system for the purpose of testing performance, stability, and reliability of an electronic power steering system(EPS). In order to realistically test an EPS by the proposed HILS apparatus, a simulated uniaxial dynamic rack force is applied physically to the EPS hardware by a pnumatic actuator. An EPS hardware is composed of steering wheel &column, a rack & pinion mechanism, andas motor-driven power steering system. A command signal for a pneumatic rack-force actuator is generated from the vehicle handling lumped parameter dynamic model 9software) that is simulated in real time by using a very fast digital signal processor. The inputs to the real-time vehicle dynamic simulation model are a constant vehicle forward speed and from wheel steering angles driven through a steering system by a driver. The output from a real-time simulation model is an electric signal that is proportional to the uniaxial rack force. The vehicle handling lumped parameter dynamic model is validated by a fully nonlinear constrained multibody vehicle dynamic model. The HILS system simulation results sow that the proposed HILS system may be used to realistically test the performance stability , and reliability of an electronic power steering system is a repeated way.

  • This paper proposes an estimation algorithm to find the moment of inertia, which is essential to design high performance controller for motor drive system. The algorithm finds the moment of inertia observing the position error signal, which contains an error information of moment of inertia, generated by speed observer. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is easily realized in the observer-based speed detection method. The simulation and experimental results are also presented to confirm the performance of moment of inertia estimation method, which shows that the moment of inertia converges to the actual value within several seconds. The speed control responses and the designed speed controller performance match well.

  • Online monitoring system is becoming an essential element of railway traction system for utilized to condition based malignance management and various techniques currently employed in railway traction system. Among the various techniques, it is efficient to detect partial discharge signals by electromagnetic wave detection in order to detect insulation fault of rectifier. Although VHF (Very High Frequency), UHF (Ultra High Frequency) sensors were adopted to detect partial discharge of power facilities, due to characteristics of urban railway, excessive noise occurs from 500 MHz to 1.5 GHz on UHF bandwidth. In this paper a new measurement system able to monitoring the conditions of power facilities on DC substation in metro was studied and set up. The system uses UHF sensors to measure the partial discharge of the rectifier due to electric faulting and dielectric breakdown. Comparison and estimation for performance of SHF sensor which had devised to detect partial discharge signal of urban railway rectifier has conducted. In order to estimate performance of SHF sensor, we have compared the sensor with existing UHF sensor on sensitivity upon frequency bandwidth generated by pulse generator, and also we have verified performance of the SHF sensor by detection results of partial discharge signal from urban railway rectifier.

  • Energy harvesting is a recent technology involving the harvest and utilization of extremely small surrounding energy. Energy harvesting research is conducted in various fields. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are energy harvesting technologies that use static electricity generated by physical movement or friction. Although TENGs generate output power in microwatt levels, they experience high internal impedance compared with other energy harvesting generators, thereby making the continuous transfer of electric power to loads difficult. This study proposes a power management system for TENGs that consists of three stages, that is, an AC/DC rectifier, an impedance coupler switch with a capacitor bank, and a DC/DC converter. In addition, the selection method of the AC/DC rectifier and DC/DC converter is proposed to maximize the amount of power transferred from energy harvesting areas. Furthermore, the impedance coupler switch and capacitor bank are discussed in detail. The validity and performance of the proposed three-stage power management system for TENGs are verified using a prototype system.

  • A laboratory-scale electrodewatering system for enhancing conventional filter pressure dewatering by an electric field has been developed to decrease the water content of sludge generated in the wastewater treatment. It consists of a piston-typed filter press, a power supply and data acquisition system. The offset of electrodewatering is investigated as a function of applied pressure, applied voltage, sludge type and filtration time. Also the optimal conditions for maximizing the dewatering efficiency in the eletrodewatering system are investigated. Electric field strength and mechanical pressure are in the range of from 0 to 120 V/cm and from 98.1 to 392.4 kPa. The dewatering rates increased with increasing electric strength. These experiments produced a final sludge cake with water content of 60 wt% using electrodewatering technology, compared with a 80 wt% using pressure filtration alone. The conventional filtration system using the electrodewatering shows the potential to be effective method for improving dewatering Sludge.

  • Output fluctuation which is generated in wind power farm can hinder stability of total power system. The electric energy storage (EES) reduces unstable output, and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) of various EESs has the proper performance for output compensation of wind power farm since it charges and discharges large scale power quickly with high efficiency. However, because of the change of current within SMES, the electromagnetic losses occur in the process of output compensation. In this paper, the thermal effect of the losses that occur in SMES system while compensating in wind power farm is analyzed. The output analysis of wind power farm is processed by numerical analysis, and the losses of SMES system is analyzed by 3D finite element analysis (FEA) simulation tool.

  • Siamese-based segmentation and tracking algorithms improve accuracy and stability for video object segmentation and tracking tasks simultaneously. Although effective, variability in target appearance and background clutter can still affect segmentation accuracy and further influence the performance of tracking. In this paper, we present a memory propagation-based target-aware and mask-attention decision network for robust object segmentation and tracking. Firstly, a mask propagation-based attention module (MPAM) is constructed to explore the inherent correlation among image frames, which can mine mask information of the historical frames. By retrieving a memory bank (MB) that stores features and binary masks of historical frames, target attention maps are generated to highlight the target region on backbone features, thus suppressing the adverse effects of background clutter. Secondly, an attention refinement pathway (ARP) is designed to further refine the segmentation profile in the process of mask generation. A lightweight attention mechanism is introduced to calculate the weight of low-level features, paying more attention to low-level features sensitive to edge detail so as to obtain segmentation results. Finally, a mask fusion mechanism (MFM) is proposed to enhance the accuracy of the mask. By utilizing a mask quality assessment decision network, the corresponding quality scores of the "initial mask" and the "previous mask" can be obtained adaptively, thus achieving the assignment of weights and the fusion of masks. Therefore, the final mask enjoys higher accuracy and stability. Experimental results on multiple benchmarks demonstrate that our algorithm performs outstanding performance in a variety of challenging tracking tasks.

  • The active control of noise generated by the compressor and transmitted out of the machine room through the windows is implemented based on the FIR filter. The machine room contains most of noise sources of electric home appliances, air-conditioners and refrigerators, for example. To actively reduce the noise from the machinery room. In this paper, the transfer function of the controller for minimization of the acoustic power transmitted through the windows is mathematically formulated. The transfer functions required for implementation of the active controller are the measured. The measurements are conducted in this initial stage under the operation of the compressor with no load. For improvement of the reliability of the transfer function of the compressor to the acoustic power, additional operational measurements are performed. The real time controller is implemented based on the FIR filter using the measured transfer functions and the performance of the active controller is estimated. Control performance is measured about 3 dB ~ 10 dB in reduction of the sound power at the peaks of the compressor noise.

  • Motions in nature, for example ocean wave, has been playing a significant role for generating electricity production in our modern life. This paper presents an innovative approach for electric power conversion of the vast ocean wave energy. Here, a floating-buoy wave energy converter (WEC) using hydrostatic transmission (HST), which is shortened as HSTWEC, is proposed and designed to enhance the wave energy harvesting task during all wave fluctuations. In this HSTWEC structure, the power take-off system (PTO) is a combination of the designed HST circuit and an electric generator to convert mechanical energy generated by ocean wave into electrical energy. Several design concepts of the HSTWEC have been considered in this study for an adequate investigation. Modeling and simulations using MATLAB/Simulink and AMESim are then carried out to evaluate these design concepts to find out the best solution. In addition, an adaptive controller is designed for improving the HSTWEC performance. The effectiveness of the proposed HSTWEC control system is finally proved by numerical simulations.

  • When a shaft is misaligned, a high level of vibration is experienced. As a consequence, the system performance could be low with high level of noise generated. Even, a catastrophic damage of the rotating machinery may happen in the worst situation. The vibration caused by the shaft misalignment is not cured unless a correct alignment of the shaft is investigated. In this paper, a step by step approach for the turbine alignment has been demonstrated. It includes measurement tips of the coupling rim and face, calculation procedure of the bearing level, and the relevant values of the addition and subtration for shims in order to align the shaft level correctly. Then, as an application of the shaft alignment, the turbine system at the Pyung Tek focile electric power plant has been examined. Since the real system consists of high pressure, low pressure turbines and the generator, detailed alignment prolcedures of the multi stage shaft system has been demonstrated.
