Determination of Flow Stress and Friction Factor by the Ring Compression Test (II) (링압축실험에 의한 유동응력 및 마찰인자의 결정 (II))

  • The purpose of this paper is to pursue a general method to determine both the flow stress of a material and the friction factor by ring compression test. The materials are assumed to obey the expanded n-power hardening rule including the strain-rate effect. Ring compression is simulated by the rigid-plastic finite element method to obtain the database used in determining the flow stress and friction factor. The Simulation is conducted for various strain hardening exponent, strain-rate sensitivity, friction factor, and compressing speed, as variables. It is assumed that the friction factor is constant during the compression process. To evaluate the compatibility of the database, experiments are carried out at room and evaluated temperature using specimens of aluminum 6061-T6 under dry and grease lubrication condition. It is shown that the proposed test method is useful and easy to use in determining the flow stress and the friction factor.

Effect of Divergence Ratio on Heat Transfer and Friction Factor in the Diverging Channel (확대 채널에서 확대율이 열전달과 마찰계수에 미치는 효과)

  • The heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of turbulent flows in three stationary channels have been investigated experimentally to check out the effect of divergence ratio. These are a constant cross-sectional channel and two diverging channels with ratio of divergence(Dho/Dhi) of 1.16 and 1.49. The measurement was conducted within the range of Reynolds numbers from 15,000 to 89,000 and the dimension of uniform cross-sectional test section is $100mm{\times}100mm$ at the cross section and 1,000 mm in length. The measurements of heat transfer coefficients and friction factors in the uniform channels were conducted as a reference. Because of the streamwise flow deceleration, the heat transfer and friction factor characteristics in the diverging channel were quite different from those of the constant cross-sectional channel. The effective friction factors and convective heat transfer coefficients increased with increasing the ratio of divergence of the channel.

Explicit Design of Commercial Pipe on a Slope with Pumping Power (동력경사 상용관의 양해법 설계)

  • Pumping power being given, traditional method requires an iteration process for the solution of discharge and pipe diameter. Yoo and Kang (1996) have developed explicit equations for the estimation of discharge and pipe diameter for the cases of uniformly rough pipe on a sloping bed with a pumping power. The use of poser law for the estimation of friction factor enabled to develop the explicit form of equations. Yoo (1995a) has suggested the mean friction factor method for the estimation of friction factor of commercial pipe or composite surface pipe. With the same approach, the present work has developed the explicit equations of discharge or pipe diameter for the general case of commercial pipe on a sloping bed with a pumping power by adopting the mean friction factor method.

Friction Characteristics of CNx Coated Dimple Pattern with Hexagonal Array (CNx 코팅된 육각대열 딤플패턴의 마찰특성)

  • In this study, we examined the friction characteristics of a dimple pattern on a carbon nitride coating. The study was conducted with a hexagonal array 40 ${\mu}m$ dimple pattern on a steel bearing containing a CNx coating. The area density of the dimple patterns were varied between 5% and 25%, the speed was varied from 0.06-0.26 m/s, and the load was varied between 20-100N. In general, we found that as the velocity increased, the friction coefficient increased. Furthermore, the friction coefficient was lowest at a load of 40N. The friction coefficient of the non-coated specimen was 0.025-0.15; on the other hand, the friction coefficient of the coated specimen was 0.002-0.02. Thus, we determined that the coated materials could reduce the friction coefficient by a factor of 7.5.

Simple Design of Commericial Pipe Flow (단일 상용관로의 간편설계)

  • The friction factor distribution of commercial pipes vary according to the pipe type and size. The present paper developed the friction factor equations of power law by analyzing the data reported by Colebrook(1938). Generally, pipe design requires pump power, discharge or pipe diameter for each condition given. Yoo(1995b) has suggested the basic equations for the explicit design of uniformly rough pipe and Yoo and Kang(1996) have refined those equations for the cases of uniformly rough pipe on a sloping bed with a pumping power. Furthermore Yoo and Kang(1997) have studied the design of commercial pipe for a general case. The approach gives relatively accurate solutions, but the equations obtained are rather complicated. In the present study two types of power law are developed for the friction factor of commercial pipe, and explicit forms of equations are generated by applying the power law friction factor equations for the simple design of commercial pipes.

Thermal and Flow Analysis of the Flat Tube with Micro-Channels (미세유로를 갖는 납작관의 열·유동 해석)

  • In this study, the general thermal and flow characteristics of flat tube with micro-channels has been studied and the correlation of Nusselt number and friction factor is proposed. The optimal flat tube geometry is determined by optimal design process. It is assumed to be a three dimensional laminar flow in the analysis of thermal and flow characteristics. The periodic boundary condition is applied since the geometry of flat tube with micro-channels shows uniform cross-section in primary flow direction. Local Nusselt number is examined for thermal characteristics of each membrane, and module average Nusselt number and friction factor are calculated to determine the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop in overall flat tube with microchannels. The correlations between Nusselt number and friction factor are given by Reynolds number, aspect ratio of membranes, and the width of flat tube. ALM (Augmented Lagrangian Multiplier) method is applied to the correlations to determine an optimal shape of flat tube. It is shown that the optimal aspect ratio of flat tube is approximately 1.0, irrespective of the width of flat tube and Reynolds number.

An Experimental Study on the Effect of the Air Temperature on the Air-Side Heat-Transfer Coefficient and the Friction Factor of a Fin-and-Tube Heat Exchanger (외기 온도 변화가 핀-관 열교환기의 공기측 열전달계수와 마찰계수에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In general, the air-side j and f factors of evaporators or condensers are obtained through single-design tests performed under air-dry and wet-bulb temperatures. Considering that the indoor or outdoor air temperatures vary significantly during the operation of an air conditioner, it is necessary to confirm that the experimentally-obtained j and f factors are widely applicable under variable air conditions. In this study, a series of tests were conducted on a two-row slit-finned heat exchanger to confirm the applicability. The results showed that, for the dry-surface condition, the changes of the tube-side water temperature, water-flow rate, and air temperature had virtually no effect on the air-side j and f factors. For the wet condition, however, the f factor was significantly affected by these changes; contrarily, the j factor is relatively independent regarding this change. The formulation of the possible reasoning is in consideration of the condensation behavior underneath the tube. The wet-surface j and f factors are larger than those of the dry surface, with a larger amount for the f factor.

  • One of the methods for calculating unit skin friction of soft-rock-socket parts for cast-in-place piles involves the roughness measurement of the parts. The measurements are conducted during the excavation stage. A roughness measuring device is installed in the excavation hole and the unit skin friction is calculated from the measured surface roughness of the rock socket. Herein, the results of roughness measurement of rock-socket parts in cast-in-place piles and that of load transfer tests are analyzed and compared. The unit skin friction from the roughness measurements can be converted into unit skin friction corresponding to the displacement of a pile generated in a load transfer test. A reduction factor is given as Rf = -0.14n + 1.48.

Effect of the yield criterion on the strain rate and plastic work rate intensity factors in axisymmetric flow

  • The main objective of the present paper is to study the effect of the yield criterion on the magnitude of the strain rate and plastic work rate intensity factors in axisymmetric flow of isotropic incompressible rigid perfectly plastic material by means of a problem permitting a closed-form solution. The boundary value problem consisting of the axisymmetric deformation of a plastic tube is solved. The outer surface of the tube contracts. The radius of the inner surface does not change. The material of the tube obeys quite a general yield criterion and its associated flow rule. The maximum friction law is assumed at the inner surface of the tube. Therefore, the velocity field is singular near this surface. In particular, the strain rate and plastic work rate intensity factors are derived from the solution. It is shown that the strain rate intensity factor does not depend on the yield criterion but the plastic work rate intensity factor does.

  • For the evaluation of operability of MOV(Motor Operated Valve), the precision prediction of thrust/torque acting on the valve is important. In this paper, the analytical prediction method of thrust/torque was proposed. The design basis stem thrust calculation typically considers the followings: Packing thrust, Stem rejection load, design basis differential pressure load. In general, test results show that temperature, pressure, fluid type, and differential pressure, independently and combination, all have an effect on the friction factor. The prediction results of thrust/torque are well agrement with dynamic test results.
