Electric double-layer capacitors based on charge storage at the interface between a high surface area activated carbon electrode and an electrolyte solution are characterized by their long cycle-life and high power density in comparison with batteries. However, energy density of electric double-layer capacitors obtained at present is about 6 Wh/kg at a power density of 500W/kg which is smaller as compared with that of batteries and limits the wide spread use of the capacitors. Therefore, a new capacitor that shows larger energy density than that of electric double-layer capacitors is proposed. The new capacitor is the hybrid capacitor consisting of activated carbon cathode, carbonaceous anode and an organic electrolyte. Maximum voltage applicable to the cell is over 4.2V that is larger than that of the electric double-layer capacitor. As a result, discharged energy density on the basis of stacked volume of electrode, current collector and separator is more than 18Wh/l at a power density of 500W/l.
Boron trifluoride lithium methacrylate ($BF_3$LiMA)-based gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) were synthesized with various $BF_3$LiMA concentration to elucidate the effect on ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability by a AC impedance and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). As a result, the highest ionic conductivity reached $5.3{\times}10^{-4}Scm^{-1}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ was obtained for 4 wt% of $BF_3$LiMA. Furthermore, high electrochemical stability up to 4.3 V of the $BF_3$LiMA-based GPE was observed in LSV measurement since the counter anion was immobilized in this self-doped system. On the other hand, it was assumed that there was a rapid decomposition of electrolytes on a lithium metal electrode which results in a high solid electrolyte interface (SEI) resistance. However, a high stability toward graphite or lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) electrode thereby a low SEI resistance was observed from the AC impedance measurement as a function of storage time at $25^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high ionic conductivity, good electrochemical stability and the good interfacial compatibility with graphite and LCO were achieved in $BF_3$LiMA-based GPE.
Alginate is a natural ionic polymer including numerous anionic groups and can be actuated by the ionic group under the electric field. The crosslinked alginate films were fabricated with CaCl$_2$. The thermal, mechanical and electroresponse properties of the films were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, tensile and bending tests. The initial degradation and tensile strength increased according to the degree of crosslinking. Also, the swelling ratio of the films increased with decreasing degree of crosslinking and increasing pH due to free volume and electrostatic repulsion. The films actuated by an electric stimulus exhibited gentle and flexible action like a pendulum. In the electric field, the electric stimuli such as the applied voltage, ionic strength and kind of electrolyte solution had an effect on the electroresponse of the films. Alginate films with 5 wt% crosslinking agent showed the highest bending angle and reversible bending behavior. When the ionic strength of NaCl and KCl electrolyte solution was 0.1 M, the films showed the highest electroresponse. The bending behavior of the films increased with the applied voltage.

A fluorinated-sulfonated, hydrophobic-hydrophilic copolymer was planed subsequently synthesized using typical nucleophilic substitution polycondensation reaction. A novel AB and ABA (or BAB) block copolymers were synthesized using sBCPSBP (sulfonated 4,4'-bis[4-chlorophenyl)sulfonyl]-1,1'-biphenyl), DHN (1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene), DFBP (decafluorobiphenyl) and HFIP (4,4'-hexafluoroisopropylidenediphenol). All block copolymers were easily cast and made into clear films. The structure and synthesized copolymers and corresponding membranes were analyzed using GPC (gel permeation chromatography), $^1H$-NMR ($^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance) and FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared). TGA (Thermogravimetric analysis) and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) analysis showed that the prepared membranes were thermally stable, so that elevated temperature fuel cell operation would be possible. Hydrophobic/hydrophilic phase separation and clear ionic aggregate block morpology was confirmed in both triblock and diblock copolymer in AFM (atomic force microscopy), which may be highly related to their proton transport ability. A sulfonated BAB triblock copolymer membrane with an ion-exchange capacity (IEC) of 0.6 meq/g has a maximum ion conductivity of 40.3 mS/cm at $90^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity.
New sol-gel precursors having the ability to protect iron against corrosion were synthesized and used to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid coatings based on epoxy. Bisphenol A epoxy was modified with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane to improve the compatibility, and water and HCl were used as catalysts for sol-gel process. Various coating formulations were prepared depending on the type of sol-gel precursors and the amount of each ingredient, and cast on iron substrates by dip-coating and thermally cured. Corrosion protection properties of coated iron were studied by a salt spray test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte. Hybrid coatings containing anticorrosive functional group exhibited excellent corrosion protection on iron, compared to that of typical hybrid coatings. From electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the hybrid coatings containing anticorrosive functional group could maintaine the initial impedance after 500 h, while the impedance of hybrid coatings without them started to decrease after 24 h.

We have fabricated the supercapacitor composed of porous activated carbon, metal-organic framework (MOF) with polymer based solid state electrolyte as a "ion gel" and characterized its electrochemical behaviour as a function of the MOF contents. The electrochemical properties of the supercapacitor were analyzed via cyclic voltammetry(CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and galvanostatic charge/discharge test. As a results, the supercapacitor based on porous activated carbon/MOF composite showed the highest capacitance value at 0.5 wt% of MOF contents and decreased capacitance with increase MOF contents over the 0.5 wt%. Consequently, the porous activated carbon/MOF composite based supercapacitor is applicable to various aspect for energy storage device.
Sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES)-3-mercaptopropyl silica gel (3MPTSG) composite membranes with improved oxidative stability were prepared for polymer electrolyte fuel cell application. It has been reported that ether part of main chain of aromatic hydrocarbon based membranes were weak to radical attack to decrease membrane durability. In this study, the hydrophilic inorganic particles were introduced by minimizing a decrease in ion conductivity and increasing an oxidative stability. The composite membranes were investigated in terms of ionic conductivity, ion exchange capacity (IEC), FT-IR, TGA and contact angle, etc. As a result, increasing amount of the 3MPTSG resulted in decrease in proton conductivities and water uptakes at 100% R.H. but enhanced thermal and oxidative stabilities.
Organic/inorganic composite electrolyte membranes were prepared for dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG)s with various molecular weight (600, 1,500, 2,000 and 3,400) were ethoxysilated to fabricate organic/inorganic composite materials through sol-gel processes. The electrolyte membranes were produced by doping the composite materials with KI and $I_2$, and their ionic conducting behaviors were investigated. The ionic conductivity of the composite membrane was highly affected by PEG molecular weight. The highest conductivity was shown by the composite membrane prepared with PEG with the molecular weight of 2,000. The composite electrolyte membranes showed considerable improvement of ionic conductivity. Compared to PEO electrolyte membranes, the composite electrolyte membrane by PEG, MW 2,000 showed much higher ionic conductivity.

Carbon-coated $LiFePO_4$ and $LiMn_{0.4}Fe_{0.6}PO_4$ cathode materials for lithium batteries were synthesized by a sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy data showed that the cathode materials are pure crystalline and are surrounded by porous carbon. The initial discharge capacities of $LiFePO_4$ and $LiMn_{0.4}Fe_{0.6}PO_4$ with the liquid electrolyte of 1M $LiPF_6$ in EC/DMC are 132 mAh/g and 145 mAh/g, respectively, at current density of 0.1 C-rate. $LiFePO_4$ and $LiMn_{0.4}Fe_{0.6}PO_4$ with an electrospun polymer-based electrolyte exhibit initial discharge capacities of 114 and 130 mAh/g at 0.1 C-rate at room temperature, respectively.
Porous poly(propylene) supported gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) were synthesized by thermal polymerization of DEGDMA [Di(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate] in electrolyte solutions (1 M solution of $LiPF_6$ in EC/DEC 1 : 1 mixture) at $70^{\circ}C$. AC impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry were used to evaluate its ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability window of the GPE membranes. Lithium ion battery (LIB) cells were also fabricated with $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_2$/graphite and GPE membranes via thermal polymerization process. Through the thermal polymerization, self sustaining GPE membranes with sufficient ionic conductivities (over $10^{-3}\;S/cm$) and electrochemical stabilities. The LIB cell with 5% monomer showed the best rate-capability and cycleability.
