  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive noise detection and modified Gaussian removal algorithm using local statistics for impulse noise. In order to determine constraints for noise detection, the local mean, variance, and maximum values are used. In addition, a modified Gaussian filter that integrates the tuning parameter to remove the detected noises. Experimental results show that our method is significantly better than a number of existing techniques in terms of image restoration and noise detection.

  • Various digital devices were supplied throughout the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Accordingly, the importance of data processing has increased. Data processing significantly affects equipment reliability. Thus, the importance of data processing has increased, and various studies have been conducted on this topic. This study proposes a modified Gaussian filter algorithm based on a fuzzy membership function. The proposed algorithm calculates the Gaussian filter weight considering the standard deviation of the filtering mask and computes an estimate according to the fuzzy membership function. The final output is calculated by adding or subtracting the Gaussian filter output and estimate. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, simulations were conducted using existing additive white Gaussian noise removal algorithms. The proposed algorithm was then analyzed by comparing the peak signal-to-noise ratio and differential image. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has superior noise reduction performance and improved performance compared to the existing method.

  • Noise removal is a pre-requisite procedure in image processing, and various methods have been studied depending on the type of noise and the environment of the image. However, for image processing with high-frequency components, conventional additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) removal techniques are rather lacking in performance because of the blurring phenomenon induced thereby. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to minimize the blurring in AWGN removal processes. The proposed algorithm sets the high-frequency and the low-frequency component filters, respectively, depending on the pixel properties in the mask, consequently calculating the output of each filter with the addition or subtraction of the input image to the reference. The final output image is obtained by adding the weighted data calculated using the standard deviations and the Gaussian distribution with the output of the two filters. The proposed algorithm shows improved AWGN removal performance compared to the existing method, which was verified by simulation.

  • According to the development and wide use of broad band internet etc., diverse application technologies using large capacity data such as images have been progressed and in these systems, for accurate acquisition and precise applications of an original signal, the degradation phenomenon generated in the transmission process etc. should be removed. Noises have become known as the main cause of the degradation phenomenon and especially Gaussian noise represents characteristics occurring dependently in image signals and degrades detail information such as edge. In this paper, we removed Gaussian noise using a subdivided nonlinear function according to a threshold value and analyzed the histogram acquired from an edge image to establish a threshold value adaptively, and strengthened detail information of image by using the postprocessing. In simulation results, the proposed method represented excellent performance from comparison of MSE with existing methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a spatially adaptive noise detection and removal algorithm for a single degraded image. Under the assumption that an observed image is Gaussian-distributed, the noise information is estimated by local statistics of degraded image, and the degree of the additive noise is detected by the local statistics of the estimated noise. In addition, we describe a noise removal method taking a modified Gaussian filter which is adaptively determined by filter parameters and window size. The experimental results demonstrate the capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we proposed a nonlinear synthesis filter for noise reduction to reduce the effects of Gaussian noise and impulse noise. When the centralization of the local mask is judged to be Gaussian noise by the noise judgment, the weight value of the weight filter are applied differently according to the spatial weight filter and the pixel change by using the sample variance in the local mask. And if it is determined as the impulse noise, we proposed an algorithm that applies different weights of local histogram weight filter and standard median filter according to noise density of mask. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed filter algorithm, we used PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio) and compared existing methods and proposed filter algorithm in the mixed noise environment with Gaussian noise, impulsive noise, and two noises mixed.

  • Adaptive Gaussian filter (AGF) is a recently developed switching filter to remove salt and pepper noise. AGF first directly identifies pixels of gray levels 0 and 255 as noise pixels, and then only restored noise pixels using a Gaussian filter with adaptive variance based on the estimated noise density. AGF usually achieves better denoising effect in comparison with other filters. However, AGF still fails to obtain good denoising effect on images with noise-free pixels of gray levels 0 and 255, due to its severe false alarm in its noise detection stage. To alleviate this issue, a modified version of AGF is proposed in this paper. Specifically, the proposed filter first performs noise detection via an image block based noise density estimation and sequential noise density guided rectification on the noise detection result of AGF. Then, a modified Gaussian filter with adaptive variance and window size is used to restore the detected noise pixels. The proposed filter has been extensively evaluated on two representative grayscale images and the Berkeley image dataset BSDS300 with 300 images. Experimental results showed that the proposed filter achieved better denoising effect over the state-of-the-art filters, especially on images with noise-free pixels of gray levels 0 and 255.

  • Due to the development and wide use of digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and Wireless Broadband Internet (WiBro), the digital contents industry using images has been progressed. Therefore, the image processing has been applied in a variety of fields and in order to transmit and conserve accurate information, the degradation phenomenon for images should be removed. As a representative cause of the degradation phenonenon, noise has become known and Gaussian noise occurs in the process of transmission. Diverse researches for Gaussian noise removal have been implemented and a great number of algorithms have been proposed until now. In this paper, for mage restoration an algorithm using the adaptive threshold value is proposed in Gaussian noise environment and the threshold value is established by using the histogram of edge image. And from simulation results, the noise removal performance of the proposed method is proven using mean square error (MSE) and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR).

  • In digital images, the addition due to noise occurs in the process of obtaining, saving, and transmitting. For examples of noise, there are salt and pepper noise, Gaussian noise, and composition noise where various noises are mixed. Existing filters have insufficient noise removal characteristics because it uses single filters in composite noise environment. Therefore the study suggested a switching filter that processes with special weighted value and median filter according to local mask salt and pepper noise density when central pixel is damaged by salt and pepper noise, and processes by applying weighted values differently according to standard deviation of local mask when damaged by Gaussian noise.
