This paper deals with the free vibration analysis of a dynamical coupled system: flexible gravity dam- compressible rectangular reservoir. The finite element method is used to compute the natural frequencies and modal shapes of the system. Firstly, the reservoir and subsequently the dam is modeled by classical 8-node elements and the natural frequencies plus modal shapes are calculated. Afterwards, a new 21-node element is introduced and the same procedure is conducted in which an efficient method is employed to carry out the integration operations. Finally, the coupled dam-reservoir system is modeled by solely one 21-node element and the free vibration of dam-reservoir interaction system is investigated. As an important result, it is clearly concluded that the one high-order element treats more precisely than the eight-node elements, since the first one utilizes fifth-degree polynomials to construct the shape functions and the second implements polynomials of degree two.
This paper proposes an image processing algorithm to stabilize shaken scenes of UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) caused by vehicle self-vibration and aerodynamic disturbance. The proposed method stabilizes images by compensating estimated shake motion which is evaluated from global motion. The global motion between two continuous images modeled by 6 parameter warping model is estimated by non-linear square method based on Gauss-Newton algorithm with excluding outlier region. The shake motion is evaluated by subtracting the global motion from aerial vehicle motion obtained by averaging global motion. Experimental results show that the proposed method stabilize shaken scenes effectively.

Electrical resistance tomograpy (ERT) maps resistivity values of the soil subsurface and characterizes buried objects. The characterization includes location, size, and resistivity of buried objects. In this paper, truncated least squares (TLS) is presented for the solution of the ERT image reconstruction. Results of numerical experiments in ERT solved by the TLS approach is presented and compared to that obtained by the Gauss-Newton method.

Panel data sets have recently been developed in various areas, and many recent studies have analyzed panel, or longitudinal data sets. Often a dichotomous dependent variable occur in survival analysis, biomedical and epidemiological studies that is analyzed by a generalized linear mixed effects model (GLMM). The most common estimation method for the binary panel data may be the maximum likelihood (ML). Many statistical packages provide ML estimates; however, the estimates are computed from numerically approximated likelihood function. For instance, R packages, pglm (Croissant, 2017) approximate the likelihood function by the Gauss-Hermite quadratures, while Rchoice (Sarrias, Journal of Statistical Software, 74, 1-31, 2016) use a Monte Carlo integration method for the approximation. As a result, it can be observed that different packages give different results because of different numerical computation methods. In this note, we discuss the pros and cons of numerical methods compared with the exact computation method.

It is important work to extract saliency regions from an image as preprocessing for various image processing methods. In this paper, we introduce an improved method to estimate saliency value of each pixel from an image. The proposed method is an improved work of the previously studied method using color and statistical framework to estimate saliency values. At first, saliency value of each pixel is calculated using the local contrast of an image region at various scales and the most significant saliency pixel is determined using saliency value of each pixel. Then, saliency value of each pixel is again estimated using gauss weight with respect to the most significant saliency pixel and the saliency of each pixel is determined to calculate initial probability. At last, the saliency value of each pixel is calculated by Bayes' rule. The experiments show that our approach outperforms the current statistical based method.
Numerical boundary conditions are as important as the governing equations when analyzing the fluid flows numerically. An explicit boundary condition method updates the solutions at the boundaries with extrapolation from the interior of the computational domain, while the implicit boundary condition method in conjunction with an implicit time integration method solves the solutions of the entire computational domain including the boundaries simultaneously. The implicit boundary condition method, therefore, is more robust than the explicit boundary condition method. In this paper, steady compressible 2-Dimensional Navier-Stokes solver is developed. We present the implicit boundary condition method coupled with LU-SGS(Lower Upper Symmetric Gauss Seidel) method. Also, the explicit boundary condition method is implemented for comparison. The preconditioning Navier-Stokes equations are solved on unstructured meshes. The numerical computations for a number of flows show that the implicit boundary condition method can give accurate solutions.
Concurrent topology optimization of macrostructure and microstructure has attracted significant interest due to its high structural performance. However, most of the existing works are carried out under deterministic conditions, the obtained design may be vulnerable or even cause catastrophic failure when the load position exists uncertainty. Therefore, it is necessary to take load position uncertainty into consideration in structural design. This paper presents a computational method for robust concurrent topology optimization with consideration of load position uncertainty. The weighted sum of the mean and standard deviation of the structural compliance is defined as the objective function with constraints are imposed to both macro- and micro-scale structure volume fractions. The Bivariate Dimension Reduction method and Gauss-type quadrature (BDRGQ) are used to quantify and propagate load uncertainty to calculate the objective function. The effective properties of microstructure are evaluated by the numerical homogenization method. To release the computation burden, the decoupled sensitivity analysis method is proposed for microscale design variables. The bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) method is used to obtain the black-and-white designs. Several 2D and 3D examples are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed robust concurrent topology optimization method.

In this paper, we propose the method of designing an extended kalman filter in order to accurately measure the position of the spatial-phase system using sensor fusion. We use the quaternion as a state variable in expressing the attitude of an object. Then, the attitude of rigid body can be calculated from the accelerometer and magnetometer by applying the Gauss-Newton method. We estimate the changes of state by using the measurements obtained from the gyroscope, the quaternion, and the vision informations by ARVR_SDK. To increase the accuracy of estimation, we designed and implemented the extended kalman filter, which showed excellent ability to adjust and compensate the sensor error. As a result, we could experimentally demonstrate that the reliability of the attitude estimation value can be significantly increased.

An electrical resistance tomography (ERT) technique combining the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with the Gauss-Newton method is applied to the visualization of two-phase flows. In the ERT, the electrical conductivity distribution, namely the conductivity values of pixels (numerical meshes) comprising the domain in the context of a numerical image reconstruction algorithm, is estimated with the known injected currents through the electrodes attached on the domain boundary and the measured potentials on those electrodes. In spite of many favorable characteristics of ERT such as no radiation, low cost, and high temporal resolution compared to other tomography techniques, one of the major drawbacks of ERT is low spatial resolution due to the inherent ill-posedness of conventional image reconstruction algorithms. In fact, the number of known data is much less than that of the unknowns (meshes). Recalling that binary mixtures like two-phase flows consist of only two substances with distinct electrical conductivities, this work adopts the PSO algorithm for mesh grouping to reduce the number of unknowns. In order to verify the enhanced performance of the proposed method, several numerical tests are performed. The comparison between the proposed algorithm and conventional Gauss-Newton method shows significant improvements in the quality of reconstructed images.

This study is to develop nonlinear analysis algorithm for transfer matrix method, which can be applied to continuous beam analysis. Gauss-Lobatto integral rule is adopted and the transfer matrix is derived from stiffness matrix. In the transfer matrix method, the system equation has a constant number of unknowns regardless of number of D.O.F. Therefore, the transfer matrix method has computational efficiencies not only in linear elastic analysis but also in nonlinear analysis. To verify the developed method, the analysis results of several examples are compared with commercial code in moment-curvature, moment-displacement and load-displacement relation.
