Scour-monitoring techniques for offshore foundations

  • The scour induced by strong currents and wave action decreases the embedded length of monopiles and leads to a decrease of their structural stability. The objective of this study is the development and consideration of scour-monitoring techniques for offshore monopile foundations. Tests on physical models are carried out with a model monopile and geo-materials prepared in a cylindrical tank. A strain gauge, two coupled ultrasonic transducers, and ten electrodes are used for monitoring the scour. The natural frequency, ultrasonic reflection images, and electrical resistivity profiles are obtained at various scour depths. The experimental results show that the natural frequency of the model monopile decreases with an increase in the scour depth and that the ultrasonic reflection images clearly detect the scour shape and scour depth. In addition, the electrical resistivity decreases with an increase in scour depth. This study suggests that natural frequency measurement, ultrasonic reflection imaging, and electrical resistivity profiling may be used as effective tools to monitor the scour around an offshore monopile foundation.

  • Modern ship hulls of large oil carriers and container carrers have become more flexible with scantling optimization and increase in ship length. On the other hand. as the demand for power has increased with the ship size. shaft diameters have become larger and stiffer. Consequently. the alignment of the propulsion system has become more sensitive to hull girder deflections. resulting in difficulties in analyzing the alignment and conducting the alignment procedure. Accordingly. the frequency of shaft alignment related bearing damages has increased significantly in recent years. The alignment related damages are mostly attributed to inadequate analyses. changes in the design of the vessel. shipyards' practices in conducting the alignment. and a lack of well defined analytical criteria. The hull deflections should be considered at the design stage to minimize the bearing damage caused by hull deflection. Hull deflections can be estimated by analytical approach and reverse calculation using the measured data. The hull girder deflection analysis using the reverse calculation will be introduced in this paper.

  • Mechanical properties of gold bonding wire for VLSI packaging have been studied. The diameters of gold wires are about 20-30 micrometer and fracture loads are 8-20 gram force. The elastic modulus, yield strength, fracture strength and elongation properties have been evaluated by micro-tensile test method. This work discusses for an appropriate selection of micro-force testing system and grip design in mim testing. The best method to determine gauge length of wire and to measure tensile properties has been proposed. The mechanical properties such as strength and elastic modulus of current gold bonding wire are higher than pure those of gold wire.

  • The pulse discharge anchor is a method to increase the capacity of anchors using electric discharge geotechnical technologies, which is also known as pulse discharge and electric-spark technologies. The pulse discharge anchor has bulbed bond length that is expanded by high voltage electrokinetic pulse energy. 24 anchors were installed in the weathered soil and sandy clay at the Geotechnical Experimentation Site at Sungkyunkwan University in Suwon, Korea and attached strain gauge at 10 anchors. The numerical predictions by Beam-Column analysis were compared with observed measurements in a field load test.

  • The analysis of cracks at the interface between dissimilar materilar has received a great deal of attention in recent years. In this paper we conducted the static tensile test for the aluminum bonded single lap-joint with the interface edge crack. Comparing this results, that is ultimate load and strain value of aluminum adherend by strain gauge with the fracture mechanics parameters, compliance and stress intensity factors acquied from the boundary element analysis, we concluded that there are critical value of crack length to provoke the interface fracture.

  • A structure gauge assessment is needed to ensure that a railway vehicle can run safely along a length of track without coming unacceptably close to lineside structures or equipment, or to vehicles running on adjacent tracks. This apparently straightforward question is in reality very complicated. The amount of space required for the safe passage of a railway vehicle is significantly greater than its static body profile for a number of reasons as follows: as the vehicle runs along the track, the track input excites the vehicle and it moves on its suspension. On curved track its geometric position leads to curve overthrows. A number of different approaches have been used to answer this question and some are described and specially applied to urban train by computer simulation in this paper. The program used for calculating the kinematic and swept envelope is the VAMPIRE made in U.K.

Josephson plasma excitation in vortex states

  • The Josephson Plasma resonance in single crystalling Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 has been investigated at a microwave frequency of 35 GHz in a cavity resonator. A sharp resonance is observed in a perpendicular oscillating magnetic field. The former is independent of the sample dimension, shile the latter shift to higher field as the sample size L is reduced, and it disappears when L becomes smaller than the critical length. The longitudinal plasma mode is a Nambu-Goldston mode in a superconductor, the experimental distinction between the longitudinal and the transverse mode leads to the conclusion that the existence of the Nambu-Goldston mod as predicted by Anderson was experimentally confirmed by direct observation of the Josephson plasma resonance with longitudinal excitations. The finite gap found in Josephson plasma resonance also provides a direct proof of the Anderson-Higgs mechanism within the context of the spontaneously broken phase symmetry of the Gauge-field theory in a superconductor.

비선형 탄성이론에 기초한 혈관류 생체재료 실험장치 (Rubber-liked Biomaterial Experimental Setup based on Nonlinear Elasticity Theory)

  • In order to understand the biomaterial like the blood vessel of artery, there is a need to quantify the biomechanical behavior of the vessel. Using computer-controlled experimental system, the experiment can acquire data such as inner pressure, axial load, diameter and axial gauge length without contacting the specimen. Rubber-liked material which is similar to passive artery was selected as pseudo-biomaterial. Deformations are measured for pressure-diameter curves. The data were collected and stored online to be used in the feedback control of experimental protocols. Finally, the illustrative data obtained from the experimental system were presented and the system shows that strain invariants are controlled to understand the nonlinear elastic behavior of biomaterial which is involved with strain energy function.

  • 고기가 자망에 이망될 숙건하에 그물면에 작용하는 붕어(Carassius carassius)의 유영력을 시험수조에서 strain gauge를 써서 즉정한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 순간최대유영력 및 지속최대유영력과의 체중과의 관계는 F 하(M) =1.45W, F 하(s) =0.29W 이다. 2. 순관최대유영력 및 지속최대유영력과의 체중과의 관계는 F 하(M) =0.11L 상(2.63), F 하(S) =0.15L 상(1.77)이다. 3. 붕어의 유체저항계수는 C 하(s) ≒0.287이다.

  • 취성재료인 탄소섬유보강폴리머(CFRP)의 시편시험에서 총변형량과 유효길이로서 유도되는 환산변형률을 도입하고, 환산변형률의 장점을 기술하였다. 일반적으로 재료의 인장물성을 결정하기 위해 스트레인 게이지 측정값을 사용하지만, 취성특성을 가지는 CFRP에서는 항상 유효한 것은 아니다. 그 이유는 취성재료에서는 응력재분배를 할 수 없으며, 스트레인 게이지의 측정값은 국부거동만을 나타기 때문이다. 따라서 환산변형률은 취성재료의 인장인장특성의 평균값을 측정하고 변형률과 측정값을 검증하는 보조지표로서 효과적으로 사용될 수 있다. 또한 환산변형률은 1) 제작 오차(편차) 와 세팅 오차(정렬 불량)에 의해 발생하는 초기 내부 변형률에 기인한 영향과 2) 불균일 변형분포로 인한 부분파단 이후 거동을 명확히 가시화하는 장점이 있다.
