The combustion characteristics of gasoline and diesel were tested in a compression ignition engine. Both fuels were used with same common rail injection system. Combustion experiment showed that low load condition of 0.45 MPa IMEP (indicated mean effective pressure) was tested in metal and optical engines. The gasoline combustion showed higher hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions but lower soot emission compared with diesel combustion. NOx emissions were very high at late injection timing but significantly decreased at early injection timing due to the lean combustion resulted from vigorous mixing process. Direct combustion visualization showed that the diesel combustion was dominated by diffusion combustion exhibiting soot incandescence and the gasoline combustion was mostly consisted of premixed combustion showing blue chemiluminescence.
This paper presents the spray atomization characteristics of the high-pressure gasoline injector for the direct-injection gasoline engine. The gasoline sprays of the injector were minted into a pressurized spray chamber with a optical access at various ambient pressures. The atomization characteristics of fuel spray such as mean diameter, mean velocity of droplet were measured by the phase Doppler particle analyzer system. In order to investigate the effect of fuel injection pressure on the quantitative characteristics of spray, the global visualization and experiment of particle measurement in the fuel spray were investigated at 3, 5 and 7 MPa of injection pressure under different ambient pressure in the spray chamber. Based on the results of this work, the fuel injection pressure of fuel injector in gasoline direct-injection engine have influence upon distribution of the mean velocity and droplet size of fuel spray. Also, the influence of injection pressure on the velocity distribution at various measuring location were investigated.
The purpose of the present work is to investigate the effect of gasoline-premixing on a combustion and emissions characteristics in a compression ignition engine. For studying combustion characteristics, a combustion pressure and rate of heat release (ROHR) were measured using a single-cylinder DI compression ignition engine with a common-rail injection system and premixed fuel injection system. In addition, exhaust emissions characteristics were studied using emission analyzers and smoke meter. The experimental results showed that the case of gasoline-premixing had longer ignition delay and lower combustion pressure compared to the cases of diesel direct injection. Furthermore, premixed gasoline-air mixture reduced NOx emissions due to low peak of ROHR.

In order to realize the ultra lean burn, the method of hydrogen supplement in gasoline engine has been examined and analyzed. A small quantity of hydrogen gas was supplied and mixed with gasoline fuel in the intake manifold. As the results, lean limit was extended to fuel-air equivalence ratio 0.35 which normal combustion was impossible by gasoline fuel. The NO and CO were remarkably decreased, and thermal efficiency and torque were increased. It was also found that by considering cycle variation, emission characteristics, torque and thermal efficiency, suitable operate region of hydrogen supplemented gasoline engine was equivalence ratio 0.5.

EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) provides an important contribution in achieving the development targets of low fuel consumption and low exhaust emission levels on gasoline engine for hybrid vehicles while allowing stoichiometric fuelling to be retained for applications using the three-way catalysts. However, the occurrence of excessive cyclic variation with high EGR normally prevents substantial fuel economy improvements from being achieved in practice. Therefore, the optimum EGR rate in gasoline engine for hybrid vehicles should be carefully determined in order to achieve low fuel consumption and low exhaust emission. In this study, 2 liters gasoline engine with E-EGR system was used to investigate the effects of EGR with optimum EGR rate on fuel economy, combustion stability, engine performance and exhaust emissions. As the engine load becomes higher, the optimum EGR rate tends to increase. The increase in engine load and reduction in engine speed make the fuel consumption better. The fuel consumption was improved by maximum 5.5% at low speed, high load operating condition. As the simulated EGR variation on a cylinder is increased, due to the increase in cyclic variation, the fuel consumption and emissions characteristics were deteriorated simultaneously. To achieve combustion stability without a penalty in fuel consumption and emissions, the cylinder-to-cylinder variations must be maintained under 10%.
After-treatment system for gasoline direct injection engines should be considered due to the regulation standard for particle number emitted from spark ignition engine vehicles. A metal foam particulate filter, which is thought to be more proper for gasoline engines for its unique filtration and heat resistance characteristics, has been evaluated via engine dynamometer tests.

In this study, low emission gasoline engine system is developed utilizing an EGR valve, 3 way catalytic converter and electronic fuel injection system. EGR was controlled by a needle valve and optimized at the engine conditions. Throttle body fuel injection system is used for fueling. When the engine was operated at constant speed by the electronic engine control system with the 3 way catalytic converter, th emissions were reduced by 50 to 90% in volume depending on he engine operating conditions.

The combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a spark ignition (SI) engine with various test fuels (bioethanol - gasoline blends) and air-fuel ratio were investigated in this research. To investigate the influence of the excess air ratio and ethanol blends on the combustion characteristics such as the cylinder pressure, rate of heat release (ROHR), and fuel consumption rate were analyzed. In addition, the reduction effects of exhaust emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbon (HC), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) were compared with those of neat gasoline fuel under the various excess-air ratios. The results showed that the peak combustion pressures and the ROHR of bioethanol fuel cases were slightly higher than those of gasoline fuel at all test ranges and fuel ratio. As compared with gasoline fuel (G100) at each given excess air ratio, BSFC of bio-ethanol was increased. The CO, HC, NOx emissions of bio-ethanol blends were lower than those of gasoline fuel under overall experimental conditions.

In this study, the thermal behavior characteristics of the cylinder block of a small 3-cylinder, 4-stroke gasoline engine were analyzed, using the 3-dimensional finite element method. Before numerical analyses were conducted, the performance test and the heat transfer experiment of the engine were carried out in order to prepare the input data for the computations. Engine cycle simulation was performed to obtain the heat transfer coefficient and the temperature of the gas and the mean heat transfer coefficient of coolant. Temperature fields as a result of steady-state heat transfer were obtained and compared with experimental results measured at specific points of the inner and the outer walls of the cylinder block. The thermal stress and deformation characteristics resulting from the nonuniform temperature distributions of the block were investigated. The effects of the thermal behaviors of the cylinder block on the engine operations and the unfavourable aspects of excessive thermal loading were examined on the basis of the calculated results.

Recently new engine system is being required to cope with intensive emission restriction . For this reason, GDI(Gasoline direct injection) engine system which can satisfy both as good fuel economy as diesel engine and the performance to surpass PFI gasoline engine is being development . Since fuel injection system plays a significant role in GDI engine performance, the investigation of the spray characteristics injected from GDI injector above all is indispensable for GDI system development. In this study , spray developing shape was visualized using laser sheet with Nd : YAG laser and atomization characteristics was analyzed by measuring velocities and droplet size with PDA. Utilizing these results , the basic design factor of GDI injector can be offered.
