Predictions of the fuel spray dispersion and mixing processes are very important to improve the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in GDI engines. Numerical and experimental analysis of the sprays with a swirl injector have been conducted. A numerical analysis is carried out using KIVA-II code with modified spray models. Experimental measurements are performed to show the global spray images and the local images near nozzle tip using laser sheet visualization technique. Computed and measured spray characteristics such as spray width, tip penetration are compared, and good agreements can be achieved. The spray head vortex is stronger as the injection pressure increases, but numerical calculations cannot show the head vortex properly.

In this study, single cylinder engine experiment was carried out to investigate combustion characteristics spray guided direct injection spark ignition engine. In the result of engine experiment, it was shown that flammable window of injection timing was existed. The combustion efficiency increased with retarding injection timing, reaching a peak value, subsequent to decrease again. These results were likely due to the effect of ambient pressure on stratified-premixed mixture preparation. 150 bar injection pressure condition and retarded injection timing from the best combustion efficiency injection timing showed the highest IMEP value due to the advanced combustion phase of the maximum combustion efficiency condition. HC emission showed same trend of combustion efficiency, and smoke emission was increased as injection timing was retarded due to the increased locally rich area in the high ambient pressure. NOx emission showed decreasing trend as injection timing was retarded. This is likely due to the maximum in-cylinder temperature was decreased with retarded combustion phase.

Recently GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine is spot-lighted to achieve higher thermal efficiency under partial loads and better performance at full loads. To realize this system, it is essential to make both stratified combustion and homogeneous combustion. Spray pattern must be optimized according to injection timing because ambient pressure in combustion chamber is varied with crank angle. In this experimental study, two types of visualization system such as laser scattering method and schlieren method were developed to clarity the spray behavior during on intake stroke. As the ambient pressure increases, thepenetration length and spray angle show a tendancy to decrease due to rising resistance caused by the drag force of the ambient air. Distribution of injected fuel on intake stroke has a significant effect on homogeneous mixture in the cylinder. These results provide the information on macroscopic wall-wet growth in the cylinder and design factors for developing GDI injector.
The effects of ambient conditions on vaporizing sprays from a high-pressure swirl injector were investigated by an exciplex fluorescence method. Dopants used were 2% fluorobenzene and 9% DEMA (diethyl-methyl-amine) in 89% solution of hexane by volume. In order to examine the behavior of liquid and vapor phases inside of vaporizing sprays, ambient temperatures and pressures similar to engine atmospheres were set. It was found that the ambient pressure had a significant effect on the axial growth of spray, while ambient temperature had a great influence on the radial growth. The spatial distribution of vapor phase at temperatures above 473K became wider than that of liquid phase after half of injection duration. From the analysis of the area ratio for each phase, the middle part (region II) in the divided region was the region which liquid and vapor phases intersect. For liquid phase, fluorescence-intensity ratio was greatly changed at lms after the start of injection. However, the ratio of vapor phase was nearly uniform in each divided region throughout the injection.

An ECU(Electronic Control Unit) with 16 bit microcomputer has been developed. This system includes hardware and software for more precise control on fuel injection, ignition timing, and idle speed. This control system employs an air flow sensor of the hot wire type, a direct ignition system, an idle speed control system using a solenoid valve, and a crank angle sensor. Especially, the crank angle sensor provides two separate signals: One is the position signal(POS) which indicates 180 degree pulses per revolution, and the other is the reference signla(REF) that represents each cylinder individually. The conventional engine control system requires at least two engine revolutions in order to identify the cylinder number. However, the developed engine control system can recognize the cylinder number within a quarter of an engine revolution. Therfore, the developed engine control system has been able to control fuel injection and ignition timing more quickly and accurately, Furthermore, the number of misfire reduces during the cold start.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the liquid- and vapor-phase spray characteristics, such as spray tip penetration and spray angle using gasoline direct injection (GDI) injector with multi-hole. The vapor-phase spray was captured by the Schlieren visualization system, which consists of high-speed camera, LED lamp, concave mirrors, and knife-edge. The liquid-phase spray was visualized by Mie-scattering techniques. Both spray images of vapor- and liquid-phase were visualized under 373 K of ambient temperature, 1 bar of ambient pressure, and 100/200 bar of injection pressure. The energizing duration was fixed at 1.5 ms. From the analysis of experimental results, it revealed that the increased injection pressure induced an early vaporization due to the improvement of droplet atomization. The spray tip penetration and spray angle in vapor-phase were higher than those in liquid-phase. The difference in the spray tip penetration between vapor- and liquid-spray gradually increased with the time elapsed after the injection. Even with the spray angle characteristics, it was found that the difference between the spray angle of liquid and vapor spray gradually grew after they entered steady-state conditions.
An efficient cooling system for a piston of an automotive engine is very important. Therefore a large capacity gasoline engine or diesel engine has adopted the direct injection cooling system to increase its cooling efficiency. In this direct cooling system, an cooling oil is injected to a piston directly using an oil jet and this cooling oil flows through an oil gallery inside the piston. Flow rate and injection accuracy of this cooling oil are very important because these are main factors that have influence on its efficiency. The purpose of this study is to understand the changes of flow characteristics with various curvatures and diameters of an outlet nozzle and to check whether engine oil enters into the oil gallery well or not. From this study, we found that secondary flow was formed in a curved part of jet due to centrifugal force and irregular flow pattern appeared at the jet outlet. This pattern has influence on flow characteristics of engine oil entering the gallery. These simulation results have a good agreement with experiments.

Natural gas is one of the most promising alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuels because of its lower harmful emissions, including $CO_2$, and high thermal efficiency. In particular, natural gas is seen as an alternative fuel for heavy-duty Diesel Engines because of the lower resulting emissions of PM, $CO_2$ and $NO_x$. Almost all CNG vehicles use the PFI-type Engine. However, PFI-type CNG Engines have a lower brake horse power, because of reduced volumetric efficiency and lower burning speed. This is a result of gaseous charge and the time losses increase as compared with the DI-type. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of injection conditions (early injection mode, late injection mode) on the combustion phenomena and performances in the or CNG Engine. A DI Diesel Engine with the same specifications used in a previous study was modified to a DI CNG Engine, and injection pressure was constantly kept at 60bar by a two-stage pressure-reducing type regulator. In this study, excess air ratios were varied from 1.0 to the lean limit, at the load conditions 50% throttle open rate and 1700rpm. The combustion characteristics of the or CNG Engine - such as in-cylinder pressure, indicated thermal efficiency, cycle-by-cycle variation, combustion duration and emissions - were investigated. Through this method, it was possible to verify that the combustion duration, the lean limit and the emissions were improved by control of injection timing and the stratified mixture conditions. And combustion duration is affected by not only excess air ratio, injection timing and position of piston but gas flow condition.

Recently, because of the increased oil prices globally, there have been studies investigating the improvement of fuel-conversion efficiency in internal combustion engines. The improvements realized in thermal efficiency using lean combustion are essential because they enable us to realize higher thermal efficiency in gasoline engines because lean combustion leads to an increase in the heat-capacity ratio and a reduction of the combustion temperature. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines enable lean combustion by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder and controlling the combustion parameters precisely. However, the extension of the flammability limit and the stabilization of lean combustion are required for the commercialization of GDI engines. The reduction characteristics of three-way catalysts (TWC) for lean combustion engines are somewhat limited owing to the high excess air ratio and low exhaust gas temperature. Therefore, in the present study, we assess the reaction of exhaust gases and their production in terms of the development of efficient TWCs for lean-burn GDI engines at 2000 rpm / BMEP 2 bar operating conditions, which are frequently used when evaluating the fuel consumption in passenger vehicles. At the lean-combustion operating point, $NO_2$ was produced during combustion and the ratio of $NO_2$ increased, while that of $N_2O$ decreased as the excess air ratio increased.
The spray structures and distribution characteristics of liquid and vapor phases in non-evaporating and evaporating Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) fuel sprays were investigated using Laser Induced Exciplex Fluorescence (LIEF) technique. Dopants were 2% fluorobenzene and 9% DEMA (diethyl-methyl-amine) in 89% solution of hexane by volume. In order to study internal structure of the spray, droplet size and velocity under non-evaporating condition were measured by Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA). Liquid and vapor phases were visualized at different moments after the start of injection. Experimental results showed that the spray could be divided into two regions by the fluorescence intensity of liquid phase: cone and mixing regions. Moreover, vortex flow of vapor phase was found in the mixing region. About 5㎛ diameter droplets were mostly distributed in the vortex flow region. Higher concentration of vapor phase due to vaporization of these droplets was distributed in this region. Particularly, higher concentration of vapor phase and lower one were balanced within the measurement area at 2ms after the start of injection.
