  • A nondispersive infrared (NDIR) ethanol gas sensor was prototyped with ASIC implemented thermopile sensor, which included a temperature sensor and two ellipsoidal waveguide structures. The temperature dependency of the two ethanol sensors (with partially blocked and intact structures) has been characterized. The two ethanol gas sensors showed linear output voltages initially when varying the ambient temperature from 253 K to 333 K. The slope of the temperature sensor presented a constant value of 15 mV/K. After temperature compensation, the ethanol gas sensor estimated ethanol concentrations with larger errors of 20 to 25% below 200 ppm. However, the estimation errors were reduced to between -10 and +1 % from 253 K to 333 K above 200 ppm ethanol gas concentration in this research.

  • A lever type $NO_2$ micro gas sensor was fabricated by MEMS technology. In order to heat up the gas sensing material to a target temperature, a micro heater was built on the gas sensor. The sensing material laid on the heater and electrodes and did not contact with the silicon base to minimize the heat loss to the silicon base. The electric power to heat up the gas sensor to a target temperature was measured. The temperature distribution of micro gas sensor was analyzed by a CFD program. The predicted electric power of micro heater to heat up the sensing material to the target temperature showed a good agreement with the measured data. The design of micro gas sensor could be modified to show more uniform temperature distribution and to consume less electric power by optimizing the layout of micro heater and electrodes.

  • Breath analysis using a portable device is better than the classical breath analysis system in terms of installation and operation. There is an increasing need to develop cost-effective equipment for testing gas sensors from the viewpoint of functionalities that can be applied applicable to portable devices. In the present study, an economical gas chamber for in-situ gas measurement is implemented with a single gas chamber without using expensive gas storage and control equipment; the gas response characteristics are analyzed using the above-described chamber. The main features of the implemented gas chamber are simple injection procedure, improved gas diffusion, easy measurement and cleaning, support for low-power mode measurement function for portable devices, and open source platform. Moreover, an analysis of gas response characteristics based on changes in sensor voltage show that the sensitivity and 90% response time are affected by the sensor voltage. Furthermore, the sensitivity graph has an inflection point in a specific range. The gas sensor applied in this study showed fast response speed and high sensitivity for sensor voltages of 3.0-3.5 V, regardless of the concentration of acetone gas, the target gas used in this study.

  • A sub-ppm level MEMS gas sensor that can be used for the detection of formaldehyde (HCHO) is presented. It is realized by using a zinc oxide (ZnO) thin-film material with a Ni-seed layer as a sensing material and by bulk micromachining technology. To enhance sensitivity of the MEMS gas sensor with Ni-seed layer was embedded with ZnO sensing material and sensing electrodes. As experimental results, the changed sensor resistance ratio for HCHO gas was 9.65 % for 10 ppb, 18.06 % for 100 ppb, and 35.7 % for 1 ppm, respectively. In addition, the minimum detection level of the fabricated MEMS gas sensor was 10 ppb for the HCHO gas. And the measured output voltage was about 0.94 V for 10 ppb HCHO gas concentration. The noise level of the fabricated MEMS gas sensor was about 50 mV. The response and recovery times were 3 and 5 min, respectively. The consumption power of the Pt micro-heater under sensor testing was 184 mW and its operating temperature was $400^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, we produced a light, flexible, wearable gas sensor by depositing MWCNTs (Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes) into nylon. MWCNTs are widely used as a gas sensor material due to their excellent mechanical, electrical and physical characteristics. We produced a gas sensor to detect NOx gases by depositing nylon yarn in a MWCNT solution. The MWCNT solution was made by mixing 3 mg MWCNT in 5 ml of ethanol. Nylon yarn was placed in the manufactured solution and ultrasonic waves were applied using an ultrasonicator for 3 h, resulting in MCWNT deposition. The MWCNT-deposited nylon yarn was dried at room temperature for 24 h. The MWCNT-thin-film-coated nylon yarn was masked 1 mm apart, and gold was then deposited on the masked nylon yarn to create the gas sensor. The sensor then was installed in a chamber with a controlled atmospheric environment and exposed to NOx gas. The changing signal from the sensor was amplified to analyze its gas detection characteristics.

  • Metal-oxide-based semiconductor gas sensors are widely used because of their advantages, such as high response and simple sensing mechanism. Recently, with the rapid progress in sensor networks, computing power, and microsystem technology, sensor applications are expanding to various fields, such as food quality control, environmental monitoring, healthcare, and artificial olfaction. Therefore, the development of highly selective gas sensors is crucial for practical applications. This article reviews the developments in novel sensor design consisting of sensing films and physical and chemical filters for highly selective gas sensing. Unlike conventional sensors, the sensor structures with filters can separate the sensing and catalytic reactions into independent processes, enabling selective and sensitive gas sensing. The main objectives of this study are directed at introducing the role of various filters in gas-sensing reactions and promising sensor applications. The highly selective gas sensors combined with a functional filter can open new pathways toward the advancement of high-performance gas sensors and electronic noses.

  • In this paper, the ultrasonic sensor for gas flowmeter was simulated, fabricated and measured according to the assembly step and the piezoelectric vibrator layers. The simulated resonant frequency and the measured resonant frequency were similar except two layer sensor. The simulated resonant frequency of three layer sensor was 48 kHz and the measured resonant frequency of three layer sensor was 45.2 kHz. From the results, the ultrasonic sensor for gas flowmeter could be designed and expected without fabrication.

  • A development of surface acoustic wave gas sensor to detecting volatile gas has been observed by monitoring output signal as function of time onto the network analyzer. The SAW sensor with a center frequency of 200MHz was fabricated on $42^{\circ}$ S-T Quartz substrates. Using the gas chromatography column has been selectivity. Experimental results, which show the phase change of output signal under the absorption of volatile gas onto sensors, were presented. The proposed sensor has the properties of high sensitivity compare to the conventional SAW gas sensor and chemical selectivity. Thus, it is thought these results are applicable for use in sensor array of an high performance electronic nose system.

  • In this study, we fabricated an $NO_X$ gas sensor using a composite film of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)/zinc oxide (ZnO). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) show good electronic conductivity and chemical-stability, and zinc oxide (ZnO) is a wide band gap semiconductor with a large exciton binding energy. Gas sensors require characteristics such as high speed, sensitivity, and selectivity. The fabricated gas sensor was used to detect $NO_X$ gas at different $NO_X$ concentrations. The sensitivity of the gas sensor increased with increasing gas concentrations. Additionally, while changing the temperature inside the chamber containing the MWCNT/ZnO gas sensor, we obtained the sensitivity and normalized responses for detecting $NO_X$ gas in comparison to ZnO and MWCNT film gas sensors. From the experimental results, we confirmed that the gas sensor sensing mechanism was enhanced in the composite-film gas-sensor and that the electronic interaction between MWCNT and ZnO contributed to the improved sensor performance.
