The Analysis of Trihalomethanes in Water Sample by Purge-and-Trap Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer and Risk Assessment (퍼지-트랩 기체크로마토그래프/질량분석계에 의한 물시료 중 Trihalomethanes의 분석 및 위해성 평가)

  • Recently, significant contamination problems by residual chemicals have occasionally been occurred from major rivers and drinking water in Korea. Therefore, the management for use of them and risk assessment should be more strictly performed. In this study, we have analyzed trihalomethanes in treated water samples taken from water plants located in the region of four major rivers (i.e. Han river, Geum river, Youngsan river and Nakdong river) in Korea for eight years (1997~2004). From the data, we could assess the excess cancer risk by calculating the chronic daily intakes (CDI) multiplied by individual oral slope factors, Q₁*, for the cancer suspected matters such as trihalomethanes, moreover the hazard index which is calculated by dividing the CDI by the acceptable daily reference dose (R/sub f/D) was determined for the risk assessment. As a result, in the case of 95 percentile excess cancer risk, it was shown that the excess cancer risk for dichlorobromomethane in the Nakdong river region is highest among the tested samples as 8.73 x 10/sup -6/. The 95 percentile total hazard index (the sum of individual hazard indices considering R/sub f/D), in addition, was below 1.0 for all samples, and therefore it was assessed that water samples taken from treatment plants of four major rivers are not harmful.

  • PEM Fuel Cell operation mode can be classified into dead-end mode or open mode by whether the outlet port is blocked or not. Generally, dead-end type fuel cell has some merits on the pressure drop and system efficiency because it can generate more power than the open type fuel cell due to high operating pressure condition. However, the periodic purging process should be done for removing water which is formed as product of a reaction in the gas diffusion layer. In this study, cathode side dead-end type operation has been conducted. Moreover, pulsating flow generator at the outlet of cathode side has been suggested for increasing the period to purge the formed water because the pulsating flow can make formed water scattered uniformly over the whole channel. As a result, the purging period with pulsation increased by 1.5-2 times longer than that without pulsating.

  • 본 논문은 반도체 및 평판 디스플레이 생산공정에서 가동되고 있는 건식 진공펌프들의 정밀 상태진단 및 예지 보수를 위한 pump monitoring system (PMS)의 제품화에 필요한 프로그램의 개발 내용을 소개한다. 본 연구에서 소개하는 건식 진공펌프들의 정밀 상태진단 및 예지보수기법은 PCT 특허 2 건으로 이미 등록된 내용이며, 본 논문은 이들 기법의 실제 구현에서 직면하는 기술적 문제점과 극복 방안을 제시한다. 본 논문에서는 현재 반도체 공정에 사용되고 있는 건식 진공펌프들로부터 측정하는 다중 상태변수들의 조사 결과를 소개한다. 이들 상태변수 측정치들이 갖는 개략적 특성을 통계적 분포함수로 분석한 결과를 우선 보인다. 특히 펌프 구동모터들의 소비 전류신호는 두 평균값에 대한 분포 즉 두 종의 분포함수를, 그리고 온도, purge gas 유량, 배기구 압력 등은 정상적 평균값에 대한 한나의 분포를 보였다. 따라서 구동모터들의 소비전류의 분포 즉 두 상하 수준('low and high' current level)에 따라 batch data를 구분하는 방법의 개발이 필요하였다. 본 연구에서는 step 함수형 eigenvector를 적용하여 소비전류 신호의 상하수준 천이 영역과 방향을 동시에 인식할 수 있는 기법을 개발 적용하였으며, 3300회의 배출가스 부하에 변화에 대한 천이 영역과 방향을 인식에 하나의 실패도 보이지 않음을 확인하였다. 기존의 측정 상태변수에는 회전기계류의 정밀 상태진단 및 예지보수에 핵심적인 기계진동 측정용 진동센서를 포함하고 있지 않은 기술적 문제점이 발견되었다. 기존 진동센서들의 높은 가격 뿐 아니라 진동센서의 출력신호를 저/중/고역 주파수 대역의 실효치로 환산하는 기술적 한계 때문에 진공펌프 상태진단에 아직 사용하고 있지 않고 있다. 본 연구에서는 진동선서 비용의 저감화 방안뿐 아니라 로터 회전 대역(250Hz 이하 저주파 영역), 베어링 진동 대역(250 Hz~2.5 kHz의 중간 주파수 영역), 그리고 기어 진동 대역(2.5 kHz~10 kHz 주파수 영역)별 실효치를 실 시간 측정할 수 있는 진동측정 모듈의 제품화 모델을 개발하였다. 개발 제품의 성능 뿐 아니라 현장 시험결과를 소개한다. 마지막으로 본 연구팀이 개발한 PCT 특허 2 건에 포함된 건식 진공펌프들의 정밀 상태진단 및 예지보수기법에 대한 현장 시험결과를 간략히 소개한다.

A Study on the Prevention Measures against Fire and Explosion Accidents during Splash Filling in Batch Process (회분식 공정에서 스플래쉬 필링(Splash Filling) 작업으로 인한 화재·폭발 사고 예방대책에 관한 연구)

  • In general, in a batch reaction process in which products are made using flammable liquids, splash filling is used to clean the walls of the reactor by spraying flammable liquids, which are raw materials used for product, during cleaning of the reactor after work. During this process, mist of flammable liquid is generated, the lower limit of explosion is lowered, and fire·explosion may occur due to discharges caused by various types of complex charges, such as flow charge, collision charge, and ejection charge. Therefore, based on the recent accident case, to identify the risk when working in the form of splash filling with toluene in a batch process and perform an explosion impact analysis using the TNT equivalent method After that, we will analyze the accident results and suggest preventive measures such as constant purge system, improvement of cleaning method, and use of tantalum to prevent such accident.

Experiment and Simulation of 2-bed PSA for Hydrogen Separation from H2/CH4 Gas Mixture (수소/메탄 혼합 기체로부터 수소 분리를 위한 두 탑 PSA 실험과 전산 모사)

  • A two-column six-step pressure swing adsorption(PSA) process was to study separation of hydrogen from hydrogen and methane($60_{vol}%/40_{vol}%$) binary system onto activated carbon adsorbent. The effects of the feed gas pressure, the feed flowrate and the P/F(purge to feed) ratio on the process performance were evaluated. The cyclic steady-states of PSA process were reached to after 15 cycles. $H_2$ purity increases according as the P/F ratio and pressure increase and the feed flow rate decreases; however, $H_2$ recovery shows an opposite phenomena to the purity. PSA process simulation studied to find optimum operation condition. In the results, 22 LPM feed flowrate, 11 atm adsorption pressure and 0.10 P/F ratio might be optimal values to obtain more than 75% recovery and 99% purity hydrogen. In this study was non-isothermal and non-adiabatic model considering linear driving force(LDF) model and Langmuir-Freundlich adsorption isotherm considered to compare between prediction and experimental data.

A Correlation Study between the Environmental, Personal Exposures and Biomarkers for Volatile Organic Compounds (대기 중 휘발성유기오염물질의 환경, 개인 및 인체 노출의 상관성 연구)

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important public health problem throughout the world. Many important questions remain to be addressed in assessing exposure to these compounds. Because they are ubiquitous and highly volatile, special techniques must be applied in the analytical determination of VOCs. Personal exposure measurements are needed to evaluate the relationship between microenvironmental concentrations and actual exposures. It is also important to investigate exposure frequency, duration, and intensity, as well as personal exposure characteristics. In addition to air monitoring, biological monitoring may contribute significantly to risk assessment by allowing estimation of absorbed doses, rather than just the external exposure concentrations, which are evaluated by environmental and personal monitoring. This study was conducted to establish the analytic procedure of VOCs in air, blood, urine and exhaled breath and to evaluate the relationships among these environmental media. The subjects of this study were selected because they are occupationally exposed to high levels of VOCs. Environmental, personal, blood, urine and exhalation samples were collected. Purge & trap, thermal desorber, gas chromatography and mass selective detector were used to analyze the collected samples. Analytical procedures were validated with the“break through test”, 'quot;recovery test for storage and transportation”,“method detection limit test”and“inter-laboratory QA/QC study”. Assessment of halogenated compounds indicted that they were significantly correlated to each other (p value < 0.01). In a similar manner, aromatic compounds were also correlated, except in urine sample. Linear regression was used to evaluate the relationships between personal exposures and environmental concentrations. These relationships for aromatic and halogenated are as follows: Halogen $s_{personal}$ = 3.875+0.068Halogen $s_{environmet}$, ($R^2$= .930) Aromatic $s_{personal}$ = 34217.757-31.266Aromatic $s_{environmet}$, ($R^2$= .821) Multiple regression was used to evaluate the relationship between exposures and various exposure deter-minants including, gender, duration of employment, and smoking history. The results of the regression model-ins for halogens in blood and aromatics in urine are as follows: Halogen $s_{blood}$ = 8.181+0.246Halogen $s_{personal}$+3.975Gender ($R^2$= .925), Aromatic $s_{urine}$ = 249.565+0.135Aromatic $s_{personal}$ -5.651 D.S ($R^2$ = .735), In conclusion, we have established analytic procedures for VOC measurement in biological and environmental samples and have presented data demonstrating relationships between VOCs levels in biological media and environmental samples. Irradiation-induced Volatile Compounds in Irradiated Chicken by P&T Method (P&T법에 의한 닭고기의 방사선 유래 휘발성 조사물질 구명)

  • To select the irradiation-induced marker components from volatile flavor compounds in irradiated chicken, and complement the extraction problems of liquid continuous extraction (LLCE) method, the volatile compounds of irradiated (0,1,3,5 and 10 kGy) chicken were analyzed by Purge and Trap (P&T) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methods. A total of 119 compounds were detected in irradiated chicken, and these compounds were composed mainly of 7 aldehydes,22 ketones,8 alcohols,30 esters,36 hydrocarbons,8 aromatic compounds and 8 miscellaneous compounds. Among these, only 21 compounds were detected in both LLCE and P&T methods, and the 98 other were detected in omly P&T method. Among volatile compounds detected in irradiated chicken, only 3 compounds such as hexene (r=0.96, p<0.01), propanol (r=0.93, p<0.05) and 1,3-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl) benzene (r=0.96, p<0.05) were newly selected as marker compounds in irradiated chicken by P&T method, which showed significant and high positive correlation coefficient in the change of relative concentration according to the increment of irradiation dosage.

Determination of Volatile Organic Compounds emitted from Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Site by Thermal Desorption-Cryofocusing-GC/FID/FPD (열탈착-저온농축-GC/FID/FPD에 의한 도시 생활폐기물 매립장에서 방출되는 휘발성 유기화합물의 측정에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the thermal desorption-cryofocusing-gas chromatographic(TD-C-GC) method was developed for determination of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) in ambient air and was applied at the municipal solid waste landfill sites. On-column cryofocusing was possible only with a 100 ml dewars bottle in TD-C-GC method with a stainless steel column. However, high operating pressure was needed for purging VOCs from the absorbent trap, which was able to solve by pressure programming with a electric pressure controller. By using both pressure and temperature programming brought increasing of resolution power in on-column cryofocusing method, but the high pressure caused a leakage of sample tube with repeated use. A loop cryofocusing devise was also developed and compared with the direct on-column method. In loop cryofocusing method, VOCs were concentrated on a 0.8mm i.d. loop which is located between the injector and separation column by using liquid nitrogen. In order to purge VOCs from the absorbent trap, only 0.4 psi of pressure was need in the loop cryofocusing method. Dual detection system was applied for the analysis of VOCs; a FID was used for hydrocarbons and a FPD was used for sulfur-containing compounds. Qualitative analysis was done by on-column cryofocusing GC-MS system. Among the large number of VOCs, toluene was the most abundant. Hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, dimethyl disulfide and methyl propyl disulfide were detected at landfill site by FPD.

Headspace Volatile Compounds of Krill Reaction Flavor and Its Application to Teriyaki Sauce (크릴반응향의 휘발성 향기 성분 및 데리야끼소스의 적용)

  • Maillard reaction flavors had been tried by using krill hydrolysate and precursors in order to develop Teriyaki sauce with the reaction flavors. Also, the study for applying krill to Teriyaki sauce had been tried by using krill instead of eel bones. To make boiled-type and grilled-type reaction flavors, krill hydrolysate was used with other precursors such as serine, glucose and glucosamine. In the dynamic analysis of headspace volatile compounds, 20 mL reaction flavor was analyzed by the combined system of purge & trap, automatic desorber, gas chromatography and mass selective detector. Three kinds of Teriyaki sauce were developed with reaction flavor, krill and eel bones, and their products were evaluated by 10 items of cooked vegetables, cooked potatoes, boiled shrimp, grilled shrimp, fishy smell, pungent aroma, burned smell, sweety aroma, chemical smell, mud smell and preference. In the results of headspace analysis, 35 and 33 volatile compounds were identified from grilled-type and boiled-type reaction flavors. Grilled-type had sulfur-containing, aliphatic compounds, alcohols, ketones, pyrazines, and other aromatic compounds, and grilled-type had aldehydes, furans, other nitrogen-containing compounds. In the sensory evaluation of Teriyaki sauce, the items of roasted shrimp and sweety aroma showed significant differences for grilled-type application to Teriyaki sauce. The above results show the possible application of grilled-type reaction flavor to Teriyaki sauce.

Identification of Irradiation -induced Volatile Marker Compounds in Irradiated Red Pepper Powder (방사선조사 고추가루로부터 휘발성 표지물질의 구명)

  • To develop a new detection method using irradiation-induced volatile marker compounds of red pepper powder (RP), the volatile compounds of irradiated RP (0, 1, 3, 5, and 10 kGy) were analyzed by purge and trap (P&T)/solid phase microextraction (SPME)/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methods. A total of 51 and 31 compounds were detected in IRP by SPME and P&T methods, respectively. Among these, 25 compounds, which were composed of 4 hydrocarbons, 7 aldehydes, 1 ketone, 3 alcohols, 4 aromatic compounds, 2 esters and 4 miscellaneous compounds, showed irradiation dependent manner with significant positive correlation (p<0.01 or p<0.05) between irradiation dose and relative concentration. However, all compounds except 1,3-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)benzene were not suitable as marker compounds because of their low determination coefficients ($R^2$<0.80) between irradiation dose and their concentrations, and detectablilty in nonirradiated sample. Therefore, only one compound, 1,3-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)benzene, was tentatively identified as a volatile marker compound to detect irradiated RP.
