GC-MS에 의한 라일락 꽃 향기 분석 (Characterization of Fragrances from Lilac Blossom by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry)

  • 라일락 꽃 향기 성분의 특성을 고체상 포집 용매추출법과 기체크로마토그래피 이온 포집형 질량분석법으로 연구하였다. 라일락 품종에 따라 향기성분의 조성이 현저한 차이를 보였다. 백색 라일락 꽃의 경우 벤즈알데히드, 페닐 아세트알데히드 및 알파-파네센인데 비하여 보라색 라일락 꽃은 벤즈알데히드, 알파-피넨 및 오시멘이 주된 향기성분으로 발견되었다. 라일락 꽃 향기성분 중 알파-피넨의 거울상 이성질체의 본질을 분석한 결과 ( )형태임을 알 수 있었다.

The Analysis of Common Metabolites of Organophosphorus Pesticides in Urine by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

  • Most organophosphorus pesticides may be metabolized to yield some common phosphates in human or in animals, and these metabolites may be used as the exposure biomarkers to pesticides. In this study, we developed the extraction method of four phosphate metabolites from the spiked human urine in high recovery by the solid phase extraction with a reverse-phase cartridge (cyclohexyl silica) followed by the elution with methanol. The extracted urinary metabolites were derivatized with hexamethyldisilazane/trimethyl-chlorosilane/pyridine (2 : 1 : 10, v/v/v) and identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Calibration curve obtained from each metabolite standard using by GC/MS/SIM has shown good linearity and detection limits of metabolites were the range of 0.05-0.1 ㎍/㎖ in urine. Phenthoate, one of the organophosphorus pesticides, was orally administrated to rats. Four metabolites were detected in the rat urine. The results of this study may be applied to development of exposure biomarkers for monitoring of environmental pollutants.

Extraction Methods of Organic Components from Rubber Composites and Analysis of the Extract Using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

  • Rubber articles contain various organic additives such as antidegradants, curing agents, and processing aids. It is important to extract and analyze these organic additives. In this paper, various extraction methods of organic additives present in rubber composites were introduced (solvent extraction, Soxhlet extraction, headspace extraction, and solid-phase microextraction), and the extracts were characterized using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Solvent and Soxhlet extractions are easy-to-perform and commonly used methods. Efficiency of solvent extraction varies according to the type of solvent used and the extraction conditions. Soxhlet extraction requires a large volume of solvent. Headspace sampling is suitable for extracting volatile organic compounds, while solid-phase extraction is suitable for extracting specific chemicals. GC/MS is generally used for characterizing the extract of a rubber composite because most components of the extract are volatile and have low molecular weights. Identification methods of chemical structures of the components separated by GC column were also introduced.

Analytical Method for Determination of Microstructure of SBR and SBR Content in Blended Rubber Composites Using Pyrolytic Technique

  • Styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) is a copolymer of styrene and butadiene. It is composed of 1,2-unit, 1,4-unit, and styrene, and its properties are dependent on its microstructure. In general, rubber composites contain a single rubber or a blended rubber. Similarly, SBR is used by mixing with natural rubber(NR) and butadiene rubber(BR). The composition of a rubber article affects its physical and chemical properties. Herein, an analytical method for determining the microstructure of SBR using via pyrolysis is introduced. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is widely used to analyze the microstructure of polymeric materials. The microstructure of SBR can be determined by analyzing the principal pyrolysis products formed from SBR, such as 4-vinylcyclohexene, styrene, 2-phenylpropene, 3-phenylcyclopentene, and 4-phenylcyclohexene. An analytical method for determining the composition of SBR/NR, SBR/BR, and SBR/NR/BR blends via pyrolysis is introduced. The composition of blended rubber can be determined by analyzing the principal pyrolysis products formed from each rubber component.

A Low-Cost Open-Source Air Sampler for the Sorbent Tube Sampling for TD-GC/MS Analysis

  • In this study, we provide full descriptions of how to make a low-cost and completely open-source laboratory-made air sampler that will be used for sample adsorption for thermal desorption-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) analysis. It is well known that harmful gases cause bad effects on human bodies, so it is necessary to identify the types and amounts of gases in industrial sites. One of the most commonly used methods for gas sampling is to utilize a sorbent tube using an air sampler. Commercially available air samplers are expensive, typically priced between $1,000 and $2,000, and their design often cannot be modified to fit the experiment. To address these shortcomings, we have developed a do-it-yourself (DIY) air sampler that is not only cheap enough, but also completely open-source. Furthermore, the performance of the fabricated air sampler was validated in conjunction with TD-GC/MS for the analysis of volatile compounds.

Qualitative Analysis of the Major Constituents in Traditional Oriental Prescription Bang-poong-tong-sung-san by Liquid Chromatography/Ultraviolet Detector/Ion-Trap Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry

  • An advanced and reliable high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)/ultraviolet detector (UV)/ion-trap time-of-flight (IT-TOF) mass spectrometry was developed for the simultaneous quantification of 19 marker compounds in Bang-poong-tong-sung-san (BPTS), a traditional oriental prescription. Various parameters affecting HPLC separation and IT-TOF detection were investigated, and optimized conditions were identified. The separation was achieved on a Capcell PAK C18 column ($1.5mm{\times}250mm$, $5{\mu}m$ particle size) using a gradient elution of acetonitrile and water containing 0.1% formic acid at a flow rate of 0.1 mL/min. The column temperature was maintained at $40^{\circ}C$ and the injection volume was $2{\mu}L$. IT-TOF system was equipped with an electrospray ion source (ESI) operating in positive or negative ion mode. The optimized electrospray ionization parameters were as follows: ion spray voltage, +4.5 kV (positive ion mode), or -3.5 kV (negative ion mode); drying gas ($N_2$), 1.5 L/min; heat block temperature, $200^{\circ}C$. Automatic $MS^n$ (n = 1~3) analyses were carried out to obtain structural information of analytes. Elemental compositions and their mass errors were calculated based on their accurate masses obtained from a formula predictor software. The marker compounds in BPTS were identified by comparisons between $MS^n$ spectra from standards and those from extracts. Moreover, the libraries of $MS^2$ and $MS^3$ spectra and accurate masses of parent and fragment ions for marker compounds were constructed. The developed method was successfully applied to the BPTS extracts and identified 17 out of 19 marker compounds in the BPTS extracts.
