  • The effect of anode gas channel height on gas diffusion and cell performance in a 100 $cm^2$ class molten carbonate single cell is investigated. Single cell separators with three different channel height are used. The effect of the gas channel height on the distribution of the reactive gas concentration is evaluated by the two-dimensional concentration diffusion equation. The overpotential caused by concentration drop with different channel height is estimated by the voltage decay related to diffusion of reactants, well known as concentration polarization, using limiting current density. The estimation could have the possibility to identify the reactant mass transfer polarization in the complicate factors of the overall electrodes.

  • To investigate the characteristics of water droplet on the gas diffusion layer from both top-view and side-view of the flow channel, a rig test apparatus was designed and fabricated with prism attached plate. This experimental device is used to simulate the growth of single liquid water droplet and its transport process with various air flow velocity and channel height. The contact angle hysteresis and height of water droplet are measured and analyzed. It is found that droplet tends towards to be instable by decreasing channel height, increasing flow velocity or making GDL more hydrophobic. Also, the simplified force balance model matches with experimental data only in a restricted range of operating conditions and shows discrepancy as the air flow velocity and channel height increases.

  • Nucleate pool boiling experiments with constant heat flux condition were performed using pure R113 for various channel heights under saturated pool condition. A circular heater of 1mm diameter, with artificial cavity in the center, fabricated using MEMS technique and the high-speed controller were used to maintain the constant heat flux. Images of bubble growth were taken at 5,000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera. The bubble geometry was obtained from the captured bubble images. The effects of channel height on the bubble growth behaviors were analyzed as dimensional scales for the initial and thermal growth regions. The parameters for the bubble growth behaviors were bubble radius, bubble growth rate, and bubble shapes. These phenomena require further analysis for various surface angles, but this study will provide good experimental data with constant heat flux boundary condition for such works.

  • In this study, FT reaction in a microchannel was simulated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD), and sensitivity analyses conducted to see effects of channel geometry variables, namely, process channel width, height, gap between process channel and cooling channel, and gap between process channels on the channel temperature profile. Microchannel reactor considered in the study is composed of five reaction channels with height and width ranging from 0.5 mm to 5.0 mm. Cooling surfaces is assumed to be in isothermal condition to account for the heat exchange between the surface and process channels. A gas mixture of $H_2$ and CO($H_2/CO$ molar ratio = 2) is used as a reactant and operating conditions are the following: GHSV(gas hourly space velocity) = $10000h^{-1}$, pressure = 20 bar, and temperature = 483 K. From the simulation study, it was confirmed that heat removal in an FT microchannel reactor is affected channel geometry variables. Of the channel geometry variables considered, channel height and width have significant effect on the channel temperature profile. However, gap between cooling surface and process channel, and gap between process channels have little effect. Maximum temperature in the reaction channel was found to be proportional to channel height, and not affected by the width over a particular channel width size. Therefore, microchannels with smaller channel height(about less than 2 mm) and bigger channel width (about more than 4 mm), can be attractive design for better heat removal and higher production.

  • In this study, the flow uniformity was analyzed by performing numerical analysis on the 1 kWe internal manifold type solid oxide fuel cell stack according to the channel height of the separator. Also, it was examined by varying the fuel utilization rate and oxygen utilization rate. From the calculation results, we found that as the channel height of the separator decreased, the pressure drop increased exponentially. In addition, it was found that as the channel height of the separator decreased, the gas flow resistance inside the unit cell increased, and the flow resistance increased the pressure drop, thereby improving the flow uniformity inside the stack. Finally, the calculation results showed that as the fuel and oxygen utilization increased, the flow uniformity also improved.

  • In this study, a $100cm^2$ cell frame for a molten carbonate fuel cell was designed using CFD analysis. Electrochemical reactions, gas flow, and the heat transfer in $100cm^2$ cell frame were modeled using COMSOL Multiphysics. Two design variables such as the height of the cell frame and the length of the gas input area were determined to obtain minimized temperature distribution and uniform gas distribution. With two design parameter such as height of the cell frame and the length of the gas flow channel, the temperature difference in the cell fame was decreased to $5^{\circ}C$ and the gas uniformity in the flow channel were achieved.

  • The present study investigates the heat transfer characteristics of a triangular channel. Three different rib configurations are tested. The ribs are installed on two sides of the channel. The rib height (e) to channel hydraulic diameter is 0.079 and the rib-to-rib pitch (p) is 8 times of the rib height. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.1 while the Reynolds number is fixed at 10,000. The copper blocks with heaters are installed on the channel walls to measure the regionally averaged heat transfer coefficients. For the stationary $45^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$ ribbed channels, a pair of counter rotating vortices is induced by the angled rib arrangements, and high heat transfer coefficients are obtained on the regions near the inner wall for the $45^{\circ}$ ribbed channel and near the leading edge for the $90^{\circ}$ ribbed channel. The heat transfer coefficients of angled ribbed channels are changed little with rotation, whereas those of the transverse ribbed channel are changed significantly with rotation.

  • A mathematical model of the hydrodynamic and heat transfer performances of two-phase flow (gas-liquid) in thin film region of micro channel is proposed. For the formulation of modeling, the flow of the vapor phase and the shear stress at the liquid-vapor interface are considered. In this work, disjoining pressure and capillary force which drive the liquid flow at the liquid-vapor interface in thin film region are adopted also. Using the model, the effects of the variations of channel height and heat flux on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are investigated. Results show that the influence of variation of vapor pressure on the liquid film flow is not negligible. The heat flux in thin-film region is the most important operation factor of micro cooler system.

  • Driven by both environmental and economic reasons, the development of small to medium scale GTL(gas-to-liquid) process for offshore applications and for utilizing other stranded or associated gas has recently been studied increasingly. Microchannel GTL reactors have been prefrered over the conventional GTL reactors for such applications, due to its compactness, and additional advantages of small heat and mass transfer distance desired for high heat transfer performance and reactor conversion. In this work, multi-microchannel reactor was simulated by using commercial CFD code, ANSYS FLUENT, to study the geometric effect of the microchannels on the heat transfer phenomena. A heat generation curve was first calculated by modeling a Fischer-Tropsch reaction in a single-microchannel reactor model using Matlab-ASPEN integration platform. The calculated heat generation curve was implemented to the CFD model. Four design variables based on the microchannel geometry namely coolant channel width, coolant channel height, coolant channel to process channel distance, and coolant channel to coolant channel distance, were selected for calculating three dependent variables namely, heat flux, maximum temperature of coolant channel, and maximum temperature of process channel. The simulation results were visualized to understand the effects of the design variables on the dependent variables. Heat flux and maximum temperature of cooling channel and process channel were found to be increasing when coolant channel width and height were decreased. Coolant channel to process channel distance was found to have no effect on the heat transfer phenomena. Finally, total heat flux was found to be increasing and maximum coolant channel temperature to be decreasing when coolant channel to coolant channel distance was decreased. Using the qualitative trend revealed from the present study, an appropriate process channel and coolant channel geometry along with the distance between the adjacent channels can be recommended for a microchannel reactor that meet a desired reactor performance on heat transfer phenomena and hence reactor conversion of a Fischer-Tropsch microchannel reactor.

  • Heat transfer coefficients in a dimpled channel, a ribbed channel, and a rip-dimple compound channel were measured by the transient liquid crystal technique. The channel aspect ratio, the rib height, the rip pitch, and the rib angle were 4:1, 6 mm, 60 mm and $60^{\circ}$, respectively. The dimple diameter and the center-to-center distance were 6mm and 7.2 mm, respectively, and the Reynolds number range was 30,000-50,000. Results showed that the heat transfer coefficients were increased by the angled rib. For the dimple-rib compound cooling cases, the heat transfer coefficients were further augmented and the thermal performance factor for the case was the highest.
