The experimental performance evaluation of a cylindrical steam reformer with various thermal conditions has been conducted. The bottom space of the cylindrical reactor was packed with Ruthenium (Ru) catalyst. A three-segment furnace was installed to create the axially variable boundary temperature distribution. Six K-type thermocouples were inserted into the catalyst layer, and three exhaust ports were fabricated on the side wall along the flow direction. The exhausted gases at each port were analyzed by using gas chromatograph (GC) system. The experimental results showed that the reforming reaction occurs intensively in the upstream region and more hydrogen is obtained when the intake gas is sufficiently heated up through the enhanced steam reforming (SR) reaction. The axially increasing boundary temperature setup provided the maximally accumulated reforming efficiency of 74.8%, when the reactor was placed at the 3rd section of the furnace.

The gas dynamics in a stagnation point upflow OMVPE reactor were studied by Raman spectroscopy. The gas temperature was measured as a function of inlet gas velocity and aspect ratio for both H$_2$ and N$_2$ carrier gases. The centerline temperature gradient was latger at higher inlet velocities and with the use of N$_2$, and only weakly dependent on the aspect ratio. a tracer molecule, CH$_4$, was used to investigate the steady state behavior of reactants in the reactor, and the use of a sweeping flow was found to be a suitable method for preventing wall deposition. The transient switching response of the gas manifold was also investigated. Under certain conditions (low velocities, unmatched flows) recirculation flows were apparent. Numerical calculations of the reactor gas dynamics gave reasonable agreement with experimental results when detailed thermal boundary conditions were included.
A new method of knock detection in SI engines, using a change of ion concentration in the combustion chamber, was developed. In order to measure in-cylinder ionization current, ionization probes were installed at spark plug and cylinder head of production engine. It was found that the electric current generated by ionized gas in core burned gas region of knocking cycle is between 2 and 10 times larger than that of normal cycle, because the burned gas temperature which is the dominant parameter of a change of ion concentration increases. However, a change of ionization current in boundary region of burned gas is relatively weak. Hence a change of ion concentration in core burned gas region can be used for knock detection.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was carried out to investigate exhaust gas flow and acoustic characteristics in the exhaust system of a passenger car. Transient 3-dimensional flow field in the front and rear mufflers was simulated by CFD and far-field sound pressure was modeled by a simple monopole source method. Engine performance simulation was also performed to obtain the boundary condition of instantaneous fluid flow variation at the inlet of the exhaust system. Detailed exhaust gas flow characteristics such as velocity and pressure distribution inside the mufflers were presented and the pulsating pressure amplitude was compared at several positions in the exhaust system to deduce sound pressure level. The present method of the acoustic analysis coupled with CFD techniques would be very effective for the prediction of sound noise from vehicle exhaust systems although the effects of the inlet boundary condition and heat transfer on the accuracy of the prediction have to be validated through further studies.
Numerical prediction of the diffusion controlled transition in a turbine gas pass is important because it can change the local heat transfer rate over a turbine blade as much as three times. In this study, the gas flow over turbine blade is simplified to the flat plate boundary layer, and an adaptive grid scheme redistributing grid points within the computation domain is proposed with a great emphasis on the construction of the grid control function. The function is sensitized to the second invariant of the mean strain tensor, its spatial gradient, and the interaction of pressure gradient and flow deformation. The transition process is assumed to be described with a κ-ε turbulence model. An elliptic solver is employed to integrate governing equations. Numerical results show that the proposed adaptive grid scheme is very effective in obtaining grid independent numerical solution with a very low grid number. It is expected that present scheme is helpful in predicting actual flow within a turbine to improve computation efficiency.
A kinetic theory analysis is made of low-speed gas flows in a microfluidic system consisted of three microchannels in series. The Boitzmann equation simplified by a collision model is solved by means of a finite difference approximation with the discrete ordinate method. For the evaluation of the present method results are compared with those from the DSMC method and an analytical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions. Calculations are made for flows at various Knudsen numbers and pressure ratios across the channel. The results compared well with those from the DSMC method. It is shown that the analytical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions which is suited fur fully developed flows can give relatively good results. In predicting the geometrically complex flows up to a Knudsen number of about 0.06. It is also shown that the present method can be used to analyze extremely low-speed flow fields for which the DSMC method is Impractical.
Recently, micro shock tube is being extensively used in various fields of engineering applications. The flow characteristics occurring in the micro shock tube may be significantly different from that of conventional macro shock tube due to very low Reynolds number and Knudsen number effects which are, in general, manifested in such flows of rarefied gas, solid-gas two-phase, etc. In these situations, Navier-Stokes equations cannot properly predict the micro shock tube flow. In the present study, a two-dimensional CFD method has been applied to simulate the micro shock tube, with slip velocity and temperature jump boundary conditions. The effects of wall thermal conditions on the unsteady flow in the micro shock tube were also investigated. The unsteady behaviors of shock wave and contact discontinuity were, in detail, analyzed. The results obtained show much more attenuation of shock wave, compared with macro-shock tubes.
c-BN films were deposited on SKH-51 steels by electron assisted hot filament CVD method and microstructure development was studied processing parameters such as bias voltage, temperature, etching and phase transformation at boundary layer between BN compound and steel to develop a high performance wear resistance tools. A negative bias voltage higher than 200V at substrate temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ and gas pressure of 20 torr in B2H6-NH3-H2 gas system was one of optimum conditions to produce c-BN films on the SKH-51 steels. Thin layer of hexagonal boron nitride phase was observed at the interface between c-BN layer and substrate.
The realization of the photoresist(PR) removal method with vaporized water and ozone gas mixture has been studied for the LCD TFT array manufacturing. The developed PR stripper uses the water boundary layer control method based on the high concentration ozone production technology. We develop the prototype of PR stripper and experiment to find the optimal process parameter condition like as the ozone gas flow/concentration, process reaction time and thin boundary layer formation. As a results, we realize the LCD PR strip rate over the 0.4 ${\mu}m/min$ and this PR removal rate is more than 5 times higher than the conventional immersion type ozonized water process.
A major concern in Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding process is the determination of welding process variables such as wire diameter, gas flow rate, welding speed, arc current and welding voltage and their effects on the desired weld bead dimensions and shape. To successfully accomplish this objective, 81 welded samples from mild steel AS 1204 flats adopting the bead-on-plate technique were employed in the experiment. The experimental results were used to develop a mathematical model to predict the magnitude of bead geometry as follows; weld bead width, weld bead height, weld bead penetration depth, weld penetration shape factor, weld reinforcement shape factor, weld bead total area, weld bead penetration area, weld bead reinforcement area, weld bead dilution, length of weld bead penetration boundary and length of weld bead reinforcement boundary, and to establish the relationships between weld process parameters and bead geomery. Multiple regression analysis was employed for investigating and modeling the GMA process and significance test techniques were applied for the interpretation of the experimental data.
