Comparison of the Sulfur Dioxide Primary Standard Gases of NPL and KRISS

  • Comparison of sulfur dioxide primary standard gases of the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS, Korea) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL, UK) was performed. 100 ${\times}$10-6 mol/mol and 1,000 ${\times}$10-6 mol /mol primary standard gases (designated NPL S115 and S114, respectively) prepared gravimetrically and validated in NPL were used as transfer standards. Transfer standards were analyzed by NDIR sulfur dioxide analyzer and compared with KRISS PSM 112-03-624 and PSM 112-03-625 prepared gravimetrically. Adsorption corrected relative deviations of the primary standard gases were agreed to within 0.1%, and this agreement is within the expanded uncertainties (k = 2) of the primary standards at the two laboratories.

  • The prevalence of obesity is continually increasing in South Korea; about 1/3 of adults are diagnosed with obesity and 1/2 of adults are overweight in 2016. Abnormal body fat mass increased the risk factors of metabolic syndrome (including hypertension, type II diabetes, dyslipidemia), chronic kidney failure, osteoarthritis, and cardiovascular disease. Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) in Korea established the validation and approval system for "functional food" based on related laws and regulations. According to the guideline of MFDS, the biomarkers for obesity study in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trial are well summarized. The analysis of physical phenotypes is necessary condition to study further molecular phenotypes and pathway analysis in vivo study. Thus, we will review currently available physical phenotype analysis; dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and Oxylet gas analysis will be examined in-depth.

Development of Greenhouse Gas Emission Factor of B-C Oil Fired Power Plants in Korea (우리나라 B-C유 사용 발전시설의 온실가스 배출계수 개발)

  • In order to provide fundamental data for developing greenhouse gas emission factor, we investigated power plants in Korea using B-C oil as Energy source. The power plant is a major source of greenhouse gases among the sectors of fossil fuel combustion, thus information of its emission factors is very essential to the establishment of control strategies for the greenhouse gas emissions. The caloric value of fuel was analyzed using calorimeter and the calorific value was 10,419 kcal/kg. The $CO_2$ concentration of flue gas and elemental analysis were conducted using GC-FID and elemental analyzer. The $CO_2$ emission factors from fuel analysis was 75,410 kg/TJ and that from $CO_2$ gas analysis was 94,265 kg/TJ. When compared with IPCC values, the emission factors by the fuel analysis was 2.5% lower, and that by $CO_2$ gas analysis was about 21.85% higher.

  • To improve efficiency of diesel engine which requests high output recently and is used all kinds of industrial areas, this thesis experimented dynamic characteristics and exhaust gas characteristics of diesel engine installed by supercharger of correspondent output 200HP and natural inhalation diesel engine through the dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer in same condition. As the result of experiment with natural inhalation diesel engine and diesel engine installed by supercharger, there were a few differences of output, but dynamic characteristics at high speed showed increased output and efficiency of the engine installed by supercharger. On the contrary, in exhaust gas characteristics, the model installed by supercharger showed increased exhaust gas such as $NO_X$, $O_2$, etc, but added value of exhaust gas is low if considering $CO_2$ reduction and efficiency of dynamic characteristic's increase. Based on the results, diesel engine installed by supercharger is expected to show higher economic feasibility than natural inhalation diesel than natural inhalation engine from an angle of efficiency.   • A bio-sensor for the determination of glucose has been constructed by immobilizing the Citrobacter freundii or its organelle on carbon dioxide gas-sensor. The bacterial sensor was better than organelle in response, but the latter showed a shorter response time. The bacterial sensor gave linearity between 7.0 ${\times}\;10^{-4}$ and 1.0 ${\times}\;10^{-2}$ M glucose with a slope of 42.2 mV/decade in pH 7.0, 0.2 M tris-HCl buffer at 30$^{\circ}C$. The selectivity of this sensor was very high for glucose. Employing for the determination of glucose in serum, the sensor showed a good agreement with a routine analyzer.

Prediction of Energy Expenditure by Using a Tri-axial Accelerometer (단일 3축 가속도센서를 사용한 보행 시 대사에너지 예측)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare metabolic energy expenditure with the computed kinetic energy for different speeds of walking and running over the treadmill and to find the relevance for individual and group equation by performing a statistical analysis, Bland-Altman plot. Seven male subjects participated, and they were required to walk and run on the treadmill with the gas analyzer and triaxial accelerometer. Walking speeds were 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 km/h and running speeds were 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 km/h respectively. Kinetic energy was calculated by the integration of acceleration data and compared with the metabolic energy measured by a gas analyzer. Correlation coefficients showed relatively good between the measured metabolic energy and the calculated kinetic energy. In addition, a dramatic increase in kinetic energy was also observed at the transition speed of walking and running, and two standard deviations in Bland-Altman plot, derived from the difference between measured and predicted values, were 1.14, 2.53, 2.93, 1.80, 2.80, 0.60 and 2.48 respectively. It was showed that there is no difference for methods of how to predict the kinetic energy expenditure for individual and group even though people had each different physical characteristic.

Kinetic Studies of the Catalytic Low Rank Coal Gasification under CO2 Atmosphere (CO2분위기하에서 저급석탄 촉매가스화 반응 특성 연구)

  • In this study, kinetic studies and analysis of the produced syngas were conducted for low rank coal gasification under $CO_2$ atmosphere. 6 coals were analyzed to measure amount of sulfur and ash by proximate and ultimate analyses. And then they were analyzed to select suitable sample by using Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Selected coal sample Samhwa was mixed with catalysts. Mixed samples with catalysts were used to get activation energy under $CO_2$ atmosphere by using Kissinger's method and shrinking core model (SCM). Also, analysis of produced syngas was performed by Gas Chromatography (GC). In this experiment, activation of the $K_2CO_3$ was the best performance, and result of the analysis of the syngas showed similar trend with result of the activation energy.

  • Composite pressure vessels with HDPE (high density polyethlyne) liner with metal boss at each end were developed by Filament Winding Process. The vessel is composed of a dome-shaped part at each end and a cylinder-shaped part at the middle of the vessel. The environmental tests carried out for possible vessel materials such as High Density Polyethlyn (HDPE), resins and reinforcing fibers up to a year showed no significant damages. The boss was designed to minimize the gas leak which was verified by FEM analysis. Most ideal fiber tension was obtained by experimental method and the fiber volume fraction, $\textrm{V}_{f}$, obtained by image analyzer were 55.4 % in cylinder and 55.6 % in dome parts, respectively. Winding pattern is programmed to control the composite thickness in the dome areas such that the failure of the vessel may occur in the cylinder. During the cure, the vessel was rotated and a constant internal pressure of 0.62 bar was applied. From this, the vessel's burst pressure is improved by 28 %. The burst and fatigue tests for under-wound and fully wound vessel showed satisfactory results.

Studies on the Simultaneous Determination of VNA and TSNA by GC - TEA (Gas chromatography-Thermal Energy Analyzer에 의한 휘발성 니트로소아민과 담배 특유의 니트로소아민들의 동시 분석연구)

  • This is to investigate the methodology for the simultaneous determination of Wk, mk and TSNA using gas chromatography(GC) in combination with chemiluminescence detector, thermal energy analyzer(TEA) . The simultaneous analysis has been estimated by evaluating tobacco. The TEA was linked to GC equipped with non -polar SPB -5 fused silica capillary column which was introduced into the ceramic pyrolysis tube by the point of 16cm from the end of TEA. Quantification was carried out by internal standardization with WDPA after calibration of retention times and response factors with authentic nitrosoamines. It was demonstrated that WDPA was most preferable as internal standard for the simultaneous analysis. The recoveries of the internal standard were in the range of 83∼96% . Nitrosoamines in this method were detected with determination limit of 0.1ng and was made by a straight line in calibration curve by TEA response. The suitability of nitrosoamines extraction in tobacco leaf was investigated. It was most suitable to extract nitrosoamines from tobacco leaves with 0.01 M NaOH within a period of 8 hours. Thimerosal as an antibacterial agent was added to NaOH solution to prevent artifactual formation. The fractionation and the purification of nitrosoamines form alkaline extracts were conveniently performed using Extrelut multilayer column and dichloromethane. Reproducible and reliable results were obtained for the determination of nitrosamines in a relatively short time compared to previous known method. TSNA contents in burley were about 4 times higher as those in the fluecured tobacco.

  • In this study, for preparation of gas separation membrane with high permeability, hydroxy polyimide was synthesized using 6FDA and APAF. Synthesis of HPI was confirmed by H-NMR and FT-IR, thermal property of membrane was characterized by Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Especially, the synthesized HPI can possible to search conversion to PBO at $450^{\circ}C$. To obtain the membrane having high permeability, ternary system consist of polymer, solvent and non-solvent additive was introduced, asymmetric HPI flat sheet membrane was prepared by phase inversion method. Finally, the change of morphology with each component was observed through FE-SEM.
