  • In the present study, the influences on the gap cavitaiton of the semi-spade rudder are investigated experimentally in the condition with propeller and hull wakes. To reduce the scale effect in the given experimental conditions, 1/28.5-scale-down models of propeller and rudder are manufactured. We have the propeller rotate ahead of the rudder, inducing the three dimensional effects originated from the propeller action. Experimental methods are composed of the cavitation observation using high speed camera, PIV (particle image velocimetry) measurements to visualize the cavitaition and flows around the gap. The propeller slipstream affects both of the gap flows and cavitation of the rudder.

  • The complete avoidance of cavitation, as a result of gap flow between the fixed and movable portion of a horn type rudder system, is difficult. To reduce gap flow, it is a common practice to attach a half round prismatic bar that protrudes beyond the concave surface of the horn facing the gap and laid along the centerplane of the rudder. However the employment of such a device does not always yield satisfactory results. Previously, the authors have shown that a pair of blocking bars, attached on the convex surface of the movable portion, better enhance the blocking ability of gap flow to that of a single centre bar installed on the concave surface. This also circumvents difficulties that might occur in practical applications. In the present study, a series of numerical computations show that flow injected into the gap of a rudder may also block the flow within, without employment of any physical devices, such as a half circular bar. This study also shows that the combination of flow injection and blocking bars may result in the synergic augmentation of blocking efficiency of gap flow, as demonstrated in computations for a three dimensional rudder system.

  • In recent practice a half round prismatic bar has fillet welded or formed through foundry work along the centerline on rear concave surface of the horn to mitigate gap flow between fixed and movable part of the rudder system. When the gap clearance has been blocked with this practice, numerical simulations indicate that the practices are not only effective in reducing the gap flow but also in mitigating the cavitation. The blocking effects are remarkably improved when a pair of blocking bar is bisymmetrically attached with respect to centerline on the opposite convex surface of the movable part. The blocking bar could be placed on the exposed surface under maximum rudder angle. This implies that the blocking bar could be easily adopted not only in a design stage but also in a maintenance stage for mitigating rudder cavitation. In addition, the numerical simulations imply that more improvements could be anticipated through the selection of section shape of prismatic bar for gap flow blocking.

  • In recent practices, a half circular prismatic bar protruding beyond the concave surface of the horn facing the gap has been formed along the centerplane of a rudder to lessen the gap flow between the horn and the movable portion of the rudder system. If a flow through the gap of a rudder is reduced considerably through this approach, previous numerical studies indicate that not only the gap flow but also the rudder cavitation can be noticeably diminished. In the present study, numerical simulations on two-dimensional rudder sections were performed to show that the blocking ability of the single centre bar can be improved by the proper choice of sectional shape. Moreover, a pair of blocking bars attached symmetric to the centerplane on the opposite convex surface of the movable portion is suggested in the study as well, to circumvent the difficulties arising from the practical application of the single centre bars. The bars are placed near the outer edges of the gap easily accessible at the maximum rudder angle to allow simple installation of the device during a maintenance period of a ship. It is found that the pair of blocking bars further improves the blocking effects and application to a practical three-dimensional rudder also backs up the fact.

  • The nozzle-flapper valves are widely applied as a pilot stage in aerospace and military system. A subject of the analysis presented in this work is to find out a reasonable range of null clearance between the nozzle and flapper. This paper has presented a numerical flow coefficient simulation. In every design point, a parameterized model is created for flow coefficient simulation and cavitation under different conditions with varying gap width and inlet pressure. Moreover, a new test device has been designed to measure the flow coefficient and for visualized cavitation. The numerical simulation and test results both indicate that cavitation intensity gets fierce initially and shrinks finally as the gap width varies from small to large. From the curve, the flow coefficient mostly has experienced three stages: linear throttle section, transition section and saturation section. The appropriate deflection of flapper is recommended to make the gap width drop into the linear throttle section. The flapper-nozzle null clearance is optionally recommended near the range of $D_N/16$. Finally through simulation it is also concluded that the inlet pressure plays a little role in the influence on the flow coefficient.

  • The flow characteristics around a horn-type rudder behind an operating propeller of a high-speed large container carrier are studied through a numerical method in fully wetted and cavitating flow conditions. The computations are carried out in a small scale ratio of 10.00(gap space=5mm) to consider the gap effects. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation for a mixed fluid and vapor transport equation applying cavitation model are solved. The axisymmetry body-force distribution technique is utilized to simulate the flow behind an operating propeller. The gap flow, the three-dimensional flow separation, and the cavitation are the flow characteristics of a horn-type rudder. The pattern of three-dimensional flow separation is analyzed utilizing a topological rule. The various cavity positions predicted by CFD were shown to be very similar to rudder erosion positions in real ship rudder. The effect of a preventing cavitation device, a horizontal guide plate, is also investigated.

  • The objectives of this investigation were to obtain an excellent spray by cavitation under the low injection pressure. When cavitation occurs in the nozzle hole, the atomization of the liquid jet enhanced considerably. In this experiments, a acrylic nozzle made the gap and installed the bypass in the nozzle hole was used to enhance the atomization of the liquid jet at the low injection pressure. The liquid flow in the nozzle hole was photographed by a transmitted light using a micro flash. The spray angle was measured macroscope images of PMAS and the Sauter mean diameter was measured PDA system. To measure the pressure of the nozzle hole, pressure transducer was used. The results of this study indicated that enhanced atomization of the liquid jet at the low injection pressure was obtained by making the gap and installing the bypass at the single hole nozzle.

  • The cavitation erosion behavior of wear-resistant hardfacing alloys such as Co-base Stellite 6, Fe-base Norem 02 and new Fe-base alloy were investigated up to 50 hours by using a 20kHz vibratory cavitation erosion test equipment. The crack, initiated easily at the interfaces between matrix and hard second phase, was repressed effectively in Stellite 6 because the matrix was hardened by phase transformation. For this reason, Stellite 6 showed an excellent cavitation erosion resistance compared to Norem 02. The phase transformation also occurred in Norem 02, but the increase of volume fraction of the interfaces caused the crack to be initiated frequently, thus resulting in a 1arge material loss. The matrix of NewAlloy was hardened effectively by vlongrightarrow$\alpha$' phase transformation and the volume fraction of the interfaces was very small compared to Norem 02. This caused the propagation of crack to the matrix to be repressed effectively. Therefore, NewAlloy showed a very excellent cavitation erosion resistance. It wasn't considered that the cavitation erosion resistance of NewAlloy was influenced the temperature of the bath filled with a distilled water up to $80^{\circ}C$.

  • A series of hydraulic and cavitation tests are performed in water environment in order to verify the hydraulic and cavitation performance of three types of LOX pumps. All the performances of the pumps are found to be satisfied with each design requirement. In the hydraulic tests, the head and efficiency are increased as the gap between floating ring seals and the impeller shoulder is decreased. In the cavitation tests, some pumps show decrease in the cavitation performance as the flowrate of the pump is decreased.
