  • Online game business has emerged as the most lucrative entertainment industry, with over 10 million players in South Korea. The popularity of online games can be attributed to the availability of broadband network and the presence of numerous PC Bangs and around the country, which have pushed online games into the mainstream entertainment culture. The age distribution of online game players is expanding and a variety of new games are under development to target certain age groups. While the interactive entertainment market continues to expand, with many new online game publishers entering the market, relatively little is known about which factors influence online game players' behavioral intentions to play continuously n this area. It appears that in this extremely attractive and growing services segment, academics, as well as practitioners, would benefit from investigating the relationships among the players' intentions to play, flow, and the impacts of several other key game-related constructs n consumer behavioral intentions. Several types of interaction in on-line games and their relationship with the flow construct are investigated, and the resulting conceptual model is proposed. Based on data collected from online questionnaire survey, the validity of the simultaneous equation model has been tested and interesting conclusions have been developed concerning the relationships between the players' behavioral intentions to play, flow, and interactions. Other interesting results concerning game development strategy are also provided.

  • This paper explored the differences in university students' e-Sports patterns(e-Sports behaviors, its meaning and personalities) based on the types of game-lifestyle. The results of this study could be summarized as follows. First, game-lifestyle was categorized into 5 groups, that is, 'game with someone', 'game alone', 'addicted to game', 'novice for game' and 'flow in game'. Second, there were remarkable differences in e-Sports behaviors, its meaning and personalities(altruism, sociality and aggression) among these 5 groups. Specifically, The group of 'addicted to game' was similar to the group of 'flow in game' in the amount of time/money for game. Moreover they were highly likely to regard e-Sports game defeat as the reflection of their self-esteem and as the tool of gaining popularity/superiority to peers. Even though these similarities, the group of 'flow in game' was inclined not to permit deviant words/deeds and to keep the good manner in the cyber space as well as the real space, while the group of 'addicted to game' was permissible wrong and aggressive behaviors in the both cyber space and real space. Third, the group of 'novice for game' was less likely to participate in e-Sports activities(playing e-Sports game and watching TV) and to be less attracted to e-Sports than other groups. Moreover they had negative perspectives on e-Sports. In specific, they regarded it as a dangerous and addictive leisure activity hindering everyday life(study, relationship with peers/family etc) and health. These results would be used to develop game/e-Sports education program

  • Gamification is receiving much attention from a variety of fields of life as it has tremendous potential to help people get experienced with 'fun' by the elements of game mechanism and thus attract their voluntary participation eventually to reach the state of 'flow'. Some studies examined this process with a focus the relationship between game elements and flow while others regarded the game elements as fun elements and discussed the relationship between fun and flow. However, starting from the fact that the fundamental reason humans play a game is for fun and fun is in turn induced through game elements, our study defines fun as an emotion and uses it a factors are also introduced as control variables for the study on the belief that game elements affecting fun will apparently vary depending on the cultural dimensions. This study confirms that difference exists in correlations between game element, fun, and flow, depending on the different cultural settings. By comparing samples from Korea and Austria, each representing the east and the west respectively, it was found that 'social fun' affects flow and both 'relationship' and 'reward' are in turn affecting social fun in case of Korea. On the other hand, Austrian case reveals that cognitive fun affects flow and game elements affecting cognitive fun are 'story' and 'reward'.

A conceptual framework is proposed and a structural equation model is developed. This paper develops the exploratory LISREL model for identifying the factors affecting the players' loyalty for some specific brand of online games. The concept of flow, feedback, challenge, etc, are all introduced into the model, as the independent variables affecting the loyalty directly and indirectly. Statistical results show that depending upon the types of games, the configuration of structural equation model is a little different from each other, but overall results are very much intuitive in that challenge positively enforces flow, and flow strengthens loyalty. Other interesting results concerning game development strategy are also provided. It is hoped that this result might provide the useful guidelines for developing the successful online game contents. With a better understanding of the players' behavioral intentions, online game developers should be able to make adjustments in their development and marketing plans, providing them with a sustainable advantage over their competition.
