Designing a user interface is important because the user interface determines the level of physical and mental engagement of the user resulting in their level of learning. This paper investigated how physical engagement through a different user interfaces is associated with fun and learning and presented a theoretical physical engagement model called, PEM, developed based on an empirical user study. The PEM model describes how a game user interface is associated with the level of fun and learning, particularly in playing a full body engaged game. There are many different types of games but the Wii Tennis, an embodied interactive game, was chosen as an instance of full body engaged game. A user study with 32 participant's age ranged from 21 to 40 years old revealed that there is a positive correlation between both fun and learning and the level of physical engagement through two different user interfaces. The results of the study showed that the extent of fun and learning are associated with the physical engagement of the player through an interface. As an implication from the study, the result recommend that the level of user engagement is realized by an effective user interface, and the level of physical engagement is determined by the level of authenticity bridged by the user interface.
This study was conducted to examine the differences of anger expression style and cognitive characteristics among adolescents depending on the level of game addiction and game engagement. 420 high school boys were administered the Game Addiction/Engagement Scale, Behavioral Anger Response Questionnaire to measure anger expression style, and Irrational Belief Scale to measure cognitive characteristics. The results of correlation analyses showed that addiction had positive correlations with all the irrational belief factors and behavior anger factors except for assertion and avoidance. Engagement was positively correlated with all the variables except for direct anger-out, avoidance, and self-downing. Participants were divided into three groups depending on the level of addiction and engagement. Addiction high risk-low engagement group showed the lowest scores on support-seeking and the highest scores on diffusion and self-downing. Addiction high risk-high engagement group showed the highest scores on direct anger-out. Based on these findings, it was suggested that counselling strategies for adolescents at high risk of game addiction need to be varied depending on the level of game engagement.
Emotion is very important feature in educational situation. Because it has high influence to memory, educational achievement, motivation. This study tried to find out possibility of serious game as emotional engagement tool in educational situation. We did our pilot experiment to elementary school students who are english as second language. In this L2 learning situation, we did our basic experiment with English language learning serious game called 'Word Collectrian". Word Collectrian has some features for emotional engagement. It has interaction for dynamic word visualization, providing context video for word usage, putting visualized word on learner's virtual home. According to experimental result, word Collectrian has possibility for educational achievement and emotional engagement effect.
This study examines the potentials of realistic controller and point-of-view to affect users' arousal, valence, identification and engagement. While media researchers have advocated the role of realistic controller and point-of-view as a possible contributor to psychological reactions of playing video game, this claim is based on a relatively small number of empirical studies. Collegiate subjects took part in an experimental investigation manipulation the level of controller realism(gamepad vs. steering wheel) and point-of-view(first person vs. third person). Results of the study showed the influence of controller realism and point-of-view on arousal, identification and engagement, and the implication of the findings are discussed.
Excessive use of the internet and smart phones have become a social issue. The level of engagement has both positive and negative effects such as good performance or indulgence phenomenon, respectively. This study was to develop an algorithm to determine the engagement state based on cardiovascular response. The participants were asked to play a pattern matching game and the experimental design was divided into cooperation and competition task to provide the level of engagement. The correlation between heart rate and amplitude was analyzed according to each task. The regression equation and accuracy were verified by polynomial regression analysis. The results showed that heart rate and amplitude were positively correlated when the task was a game, and negatively correlated when there was a reference task. The accuracy of classifying between game and reference task was 89%. The accuracy between tasks was confirmed to be 76.5%. This study is expected to be used to quantitatively evaluate the level of engagement in real time.
This study examined if realistic cues of violence - blood color (red), sound cues (screams of pain), and perspective (first-person) - influence user arousal, feeling of presence, and their memory for the game events and positions with personal experience of games. The relationship between arousal and presence was also analyzed with their effects on memory in a 3D modified shooter game (CounterStrike). Results indicated that both realism cues of violence increased the player's arousal regardless of the user's level of game experience, and the arousal had a significant relationship with engagement by affecting presence strongly. Especially, engagement (a sub-factor of presence) was stronger than other variables in explaining the memory effect, and it mediated the effect between arousal and memory. However, the first-person perspective did not show any significant effect on arousal, and had a negative effect on engagement.
The purpose of this study is to find out the impact of classes using a game-based student response system on learning engagement. It is an experimental study that compares learning engagement in classes (experimental groups) and lecture-style classes (comparative groups) that utilize GSRS in nursing education. A total of 211 nursing students participated from October 2019 to December 2019. The differences in learning engagement between the two groups were analyzed as t-test and correlation analysis was conducted on related factors. There was a difference between the comparison group and the experimental group in overall learning engagement(p=.013) and emotional engagement(p=.002). This is meaningful in that it has verified the learning engagement effect of the GSRS for the first time in Korea.

Digital Game design with educational purposes and User Experience measurement via game analytics has been extensively covered in literature, however non-digital games such as tabletops in education and its corresponding educational impact have limited research. In this paper, we propose a guideline to create non-digital educational games from scratch and evaluate them based on the know-how of developers and the investigation of scholars who have studied the engagement factors related to the digital games and applied their findings to non-digital games. Along with the guideline we provide an actual implementation, a game called HXGN_766, meant to serve as scaffolding of computational thinking and rudimentary Python programing concepts. We believe both, guideline and game, can be a useful reference for those interested on game design, educational content design, game quality control check, and unplugged computer science activities. This is the first in a series of papers where the game design concept, the evaluation methodology and the game itself will be presented with more detail.
This study has made an in-depth analysis of the 'Puzzle System' which is a characteristic structural unit of the Adventure Game, and concentrates on the mechanism where the experience arouses in the player a 'desire (quasi-need) to finish' that leads to one's immersion and engagement in the game. In the course of conducting this study, documentary records were consulted and also this writer personally played video games to learn the component elements and fundamental characteristics of the Adventure Games and to experience how the player was immersed in the game. Thus, the Puzzle System in the Adventure Game was defined and an analysis was made of the structure and course of play where the puzzle part and the narrative part within the system organically interacted between them in the system. In order to confirm the formation and effects of 'desire to finish' shown in the hypothetic assumptions, two experiment-purpose game units were produced, one with dramatic cut scenes and the other without them, so that differences between them could be found. I also conducted an experiment to learn the generation and effect of the 'desire to finish' of the Puzzle elements by using different games with a varying degree of difficulty.
With the progress of information technology and the rapid development of the gamification marketing, corporate marketing through virtual CSR co-create as customer acquisition, customer retention strategy has become the hot topic, but the reality results show that the effect of virtual CSR co-create fails to reach an enterprise's marketing purposes. Based on the success model of D&M information system, from the perspective of customer engagement, this study analyzes how enterprises achieve customer engagement and bring gameful experience to customers through gamification marketing in the context of virtual CSR co-create. The empirical results show that the quality of game information -- social interaction and sense of achievement in the context of virtual CSR co-create have a significant positive impact on consumers' gameful experience, and customer engagement plays a partial mediating role between social interaction, sense of achievement and consumers' gameful experience.
