  • BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) is a way to control computer by using the human brain waves. As the hardware using brain wave technologies has developed, former expensive and big sized brain wave measuring devices have recently become much smaller and cheaper in their prices, making it possible for the individuals to buy them. This predicts them to be applied in various fields of multimedia industry. This thesis is to give an insight into whether the BCI device can be used as a new gaming device approaching it in a game designing point of view. At first, we proposed game play elements that can effectively utilizing the BCI devices, systematize, and produced a game prototype adopting the BCI device based on such game play elements. Next, we verified it with statistical data analysis to show that the prototype adopting the BCI device gives more clear and efficient controls in its game play than a game of only adopting keyboard & mouse devices and analysis verified that BCI-based game play elements provide users with a more intuitive and interesting experience than traditional non-BcI-based game play elements. The results will give a guideline for effective game design methodology for making BCI based games.

Nowadays, many game elements are combined with each other, and horror and puzzle elements are often combined to appear in side-scrolling games, bringing players a unique gaming experience. In such games, players seem to be watching their own manipulation of characters. The performance is the same as a stage play, so how to let players better experience such a horror and puzzle-solving stage play through the design of the characters is a key point. However, it is often difficult to accurately classify only from game elements, so first of all, the author will explain the game division of the side scrolling horror puzzle game. After that, this article will analyze the character designs in the three works with high sales and good reputation on Steam, and then draw conclusions.

The Purpose of this study is to analyze the popular game characters of USA, Japan and Korea in order to provide empirical analysis of traditional Chinese elements applied in existing games. The RPG games in USA, Japan and Korea were selected for the contents analysis of the Chinese elements to show how the existing game companies used Chinese elements. The main findings of the research from survey data are rather inconsistent with the content analysis. In particular, all the RPG game companies of USA, Japan and Korea showed a remarkable ratio of using Manzu clothes more than Hanzu clothes. But, the preference of real game users on the Manzu style were lower than Hanzu style. Moreover, Chinese users showed more preference of the game character background that users more deepen Chinese culture. We suggest that applying Chinese elements need to be more selective based on real user's demand.
