  • Magnesium alloys have been extensively studied in recent years for potential biodegradable implant applications. A great deal of work has been done on the evaluation of the corrosion behaviour of magnesium alloys under in vitro and in vivo conditions. However, magnesium alloys, in general, contain secondary phase particles distributed in the matrix and/or along the grain boundaries. Owing to their difference in chemistry in comparison with magnesium matrix, these particles may exhibit different corrosion behaviour. It is essential to understand the corrosion behaviour of secondary phase particles in magnesium alloys in physiological conditions for implant applications. This paper critically reviews the biodegradation behaviour of secondary phase particles in magnesium alloys.

  • Galvanized Steel pipes have been widely used in industries and apartments, Unexpected early leakage has been found in an apartment. Tunneling corrosion or penetration was found in the water supply pipes. The chemical compositions of the pipes and properties of coating layer were evaluated. The pipes met the specification of KS D 3507. The cause of early failure was analyzed through the examination of macrostructures and microstructures, It was found that the pipes were failed by grooving corrosion, which resulted from galvanic corrosion of weld bead and matrix.

  • For the evaluation of corrosion resistance of Al 6061-T6 alloy, Tafel method and immersion test was performed with Friction Stir Weld(FSW) and Gas Metal Arc Weld(GMAW). The Tafel and immersion test results indicated that GMA weld was severely attacked compared with those of friction stir weld. It may be mainly due to the galvanic corrosion mechanism act on the GMA weld.

  • Copper is used in various applications in environments favoring and enabling formation of biofilms by naturally occurring microbes. Copper is also the chosen corrosion barrier for nuclear waste in Finland. The copper canisters should have lifetimes of 100,000 years. Copper is commonly considered to be resistant to corrosion in oxygen-free water. This is an important argument for using copper as a corrosion protection in the planned canisters for spent nuclear-fuel encapsulation. However, microbial biofilm formation on metal surfaces can increase corrosion in various conditions and provide conditions where corrosion would not otherwise occur. Microbes can alter pH and redox potential, excrete corrosion-inducing metabolites, directly or indirectly reduce or oxidize the corrosion products, and form biofilms that create corrosive microenvironments. Microbial metabolites are known to initiate, facilitate, or accelerate general or localized corrosion, galvanic corrosion, and intergranular corrosion, as well as enable stress-corrosion cracking. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are present in the repository environment. Sulfide is known to be a corrosive agent for copper. Here we show results from corrosion of copper in anoxic simulated ground water in the presence of SRB enriched from the planned disposal site.

  • As the number of cases of performance degradation owing to corrosion of plant during processing in industries increases, the cost of maintaining industrial factory is increasing year by the year. Most of the materials of the facilities are consist of stainless steel (SS) such as austenite SS, ferrite SS, martensite SS, and duplex SS. Among them austenite SS is cheap and has excellent corrosion resistance and heat resistance. Corrosion is the consumption and change of metals by altering chemical and electrical reactions. The types of SS corrosion include pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, galvanic corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and thermal corrosion. The corrosion of SS is not only investigated various environmental factors but also the measurement of the corrosion rate. Therefore, it aims to understand comprehensive corrosion rates in various environments using qualitative, quantitative and electrochemical methods.

  • Due to various types of Zn coatings for many decades for various applications, it is imperative to study and compare their corrosion resistance properties of some of these. Here, we introduce a systematic methodology for evaluation and validation of corrosion protection properties of metallic coatings. According to this methodology, samples are were exposed in an advanced cyclic corrosion test chamber according to ISO 14993, and removed at the end of each withdrawal for respective corrosion and electrochemical characterization to evaluate both barrier and galvanic protection properties. Corrosion protection properties of coatings were evaluated by visual examination according to ISO 10289, mass loss and subsequent corrosion rate measurements, electrochemical properties, and advanced electrochemical scanning techniques. In this study, corrosion protection properties of a commercial zinc rich coating (ZRC) on AISI 1020 mild steel substrates were evaluated and benchmarked against hot dip galvanized (HDG). Results were correlated, and corrosion protection capabilities of the two coatings were compared. The zinc rich coating performed better than hot dip galvanized coating in terms of overall corrosion protection properties, according to the exposure and experimental conditions used in this study. It proved to be a suitable candidate to replace hot dip galvanized coatings for desired applications.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the corrosion behavior of aluminum (AA1100) in a mixed solution of 0 ~ 0.1 g/L Na2S + 0.3 ~ 3 g/L NaCl + 0 ~ 10 mL/L H2O2. Potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed. Effects of solution compositions on corrosion potential, corrosion rate, and pitting potential of aluminum were statistically analyzed with a regression model. Results suggested that localized corrosion susceptibility of aluminum was increased in the solution with increasing concentration of NaCl because the pitting potential was lowered linearly with increasing NaCl concentration. On the contrary, H2O2 mitigated the galvanic corrosion of aluminum by increasing the corrosion potential. It also mitigated localized corrosion by increasing the pitting potential of aluminum. Na2S did not exert a noticeable effect on the corrosion of aluminum. These effects of different chemical species at various concentrations were independent of each other. Synergy or offset effect was not observed.

  • In order to investigate quantitative behavior of galvanic corrosion in the weld joint between stainless steel and carbon steel, electrochemical polarization experiments are performed for various pH, water temperature with boric acid concentration 4000ppm. The corrosion rate of stainless steel was almost independent of the variation of pH. The significant corrosion rates of carbon steel and the weld joint of carbon-carbon steel were observed at pH 4. The corrosion rates in the weld joint of the carbon-stainless steel were observed depending on the variation of pH level.

  • This experiment from March 1, 1998 to August 31, 2001 through XRD, XRF, SEM, EDS had effects as follows. 1. According to the results of test using XRD and EDS, we found that the main ingredients causing corrosion of steel pipe was ${Fe_2}{O_3}$, that of cast iron pipe was $CaCO_3$. 2. The main ingredient of corrosion products in a water pipe was Fe. On an average Fe occuied 93.36% of corrosion products in case of steel pipe while it did 85.47% in case of cast iron pipe. 3. In case of a piped water passed through SCALE BUSTER over 10 times, the corrosion products decreased largely by the galvanic effect and sacrifical anode caused by the concerntration of Zn.

  • This research was carried out to investigate the corrosion prevention effect in the water distribution system by galvanized zinc-brass pipe which is using potential between brass and zinc. As a result of this study, pH and conductivity of influent were constant in spite of its installation, and it was difficult to estimate the effect of the installation with temporary increased and reduced concentration of Zn and Fe ions, respectively. However, since the corrosion rate of the steel coupon with galvanized zinc-brass pipe was relatively low, it has an effect of inhibiting corrosion.
