  • Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a systemic disease that affects the skin and other tissues in patients with renal insufficiency and exposure to gadolinium-containing contrast. A 55-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis was consulted for progressive general weakness. After she had undergone multiple MRIs with gadolinium-containing contrast media, muscle weakness and skin lesions were developed. Her skin and muscle biopsy specimens showed CD34+ fibroblast entrapping collagen bundles. There are few reports of NSF with myopathy.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to analyze the patterns of intervertebral disc enhancement seen in infectious spondylitis, differentiate between two groups[tuberculous vs pyogenic spondylitis]. Methods : Between January 1994 and December 2002, 83patients underwent operative procedure with confirmed to histopathologic evaluation. Magnetic resonance[MR] images were obtained in all patients and were analyzed retrospectively. 57patients had tuberculosis and 26patients were infected by pyogens. The patterns of gadolinium enhancement of disc were classified into 4 types[post's classification] : Type I, non-enhancing; Type II, enhancement of the peripheral rim; Type III, Type II with central area and partial endplate; Type IV, general enhancement. Results : The enhancement patterns observed were as follows : Common pattern of tuberculous spondylitis was Type II, and pyogenic spondylitis was Type III. [p < 0.01] This difference may result from pathophysiologic varieties of organisms. Conclusion : Careful preoperative MR analysis of the patterns of disc enhancement occuring in infectious spondylitis can be useful for differentiating between the tuberculous and pyogenic spondylitis.

  • In this study, a newly-synthesized metalloporphyrin, Gd-chlorin (PB Chlorin), was investigated by using a simple tissue phantom to test its efficacy as an MRI contrast agent. This study demonstrated the potential activity of Gd-chlorin as not only a MRI contrast agent, but also as a PDT photosensitizer by using a simple tissue phantom and conducting a very brief MRI experiment.

  • Red europium(III) and green terbium(III) activating phosphors have been doped and co-doped in gadolinium oxide supports by a hydrothermal method. Scanning electron microscope images reveal that they are one-dimensional nanorods of 40~50 wide and 250~300 nm long. The gadolinium oxide supports show Gd(OH)3 of hexagonal phase and Gd2O3 of cubic crystal structure before and after a thermal annealing, respectively based on X-ray diffraction analysis. Their physicochemical characteristics have further been examined by photoluminescence spectroscopy, FT-IR, UV-visible absorption, and optical microscope. The emission colors are characterized by CIE coordinates. In addition, the emissions from Eu(III) and Tb(III) are assigned to $5D0{\rightarrow}7FJ$ (J=0,1,2,3,4) and $5D4{\rightarrow}FJ$ (J=6,5,4,3), respectively.

  • A simplified flowsheet for pyroprocessing commercial spent fuel is proposed in which the only salt treatment step is actinide drawdown from electrorefiner salt. Actinide drawdown can be performed using a simple galvanic reduction process utilizing the reducing potential of gadolinium metal. Recent results of equilibrium reduction potentials for Gd, Ce, Nd, and La are summarized. A description of a recent experiment to demonstrate galvanic reduction with gadolinium is reviewed. Based on these experimental results and material balances of the flowsheet, this new variant of the pyroprocessing scheme is expected to meet the objectives of minimizing cost, maximizing processing rate, minimizing proliferation risk, and optimizing the utilization of geologic repository space.

  • Here we report on the first results of sensitivity evaluation of the gadolinium-aluminum-gallium- garnet (GAGG) scintillation detector with SiPM readout to fast and slow neutrons and, to the natural background and Co-60 γ-radiation as well. Data on sensitivity were obtained using certified dosimetry benches, so it can be utilized in the calculation of detection limits of neutron flux with such type of detectors. It was concluded that use of GAGG scintillator has a good prospect for neutron monitoring in different parts of nuclear research reactors and power plants.

  • Bi-substituted gadolinium iron garnet films were deposited on GGG(111) and NGG (111) substrates by irradiating KrF excimer laser onto targets having compositions of $Bi_{x}Gd_{3-x}Fe_{5}O_{12}$ ($2.0{\leq}x{\leq}3.0$) under substrate temperature of $580~620^{\circ}C$. Analysis on structure, composition and angle of Faraday rotation, ${\theta}_{F}$, were carried out. The composition, the structure and the magneto-optical properties of the obtained films were found to be strongly dependent both on the compositions of the targets and on the pressure of oxygen. Before annealing in air, all films showed ${\theta}_{F}{\geq}0$ at ${\lambda}=6328{\AA}$, while several films showed ${\theta}_{F}{\leq}0$ after the annealing. The highest value of Bi-substitution up to x = 1.76 with uniform composition was obtained.
