Magnesium alloys are becoming important material for light weight car body, due to their low specific density but high specific strength. However they have a poor weldability, caused high oxidization tendency and low vapor temperature. In this study, the welding performance of magnesium alloys was investigated for automobile application. The materials were rolled magnesium alloy sheet contains Al and Zn such as AZ3l , AZ6l and AZ9l. Three types of welding process were studied, that were GTAW, Laser beam welding and FSW. To evaluate the weldability, we examined the appearance of welding bead. Also we checked bead shape and internal defects such as crack and porosity on cross section of welding bead. The mechanical property was measured for welded specimen by tensile test. For determination of the strength change by welding process, the hardness profile across the welding center was measured. For the results, the tensile properties of welded specimen were decreased obviously on all welding process. For the fusion welding process such as GTAW and laser beam welding, the surface of the welding bead was covered with oxidized magnesium dust but it was removed by simple cleaning work as wipe-out with tissue. Also under cut, that caused vaporization of base metal was occurred. for the friction stir welding, there was no oxidation, under-cut or internal defects. However it had poor weld performance, the reason was cleavage fracture occurred at plastic deformation zone. For welding of magnesium alloy, the laser beam welding process was recommended.
Extruded and cast plates of AZ type magnesium alloys were successfully joined by friction stir welding (FSW). Effect of FSW conditions on the formation of the defect was revealed in relation to tool rotation speed and specimen travel speed. Magnesium alloy with higher aluminum content became difficult to be joined and the optimum condition without defect was restricted into narrow condition range. The structure of the stirred zone was a fine-grained recrystallized structure even in the case of cast AZ91D. FSW joint had better mechanical properties than those of GTA welded joint. Especially the toughness of the stirred zone increased more than that of the base metal.

Gas tungsten arc(GTA) welding is used to rrpiar the seat ring in swing type check valve in power plant because of its high weld quality. In order to automate the welding process, it is needed to analyze the process of inside pipe girth welding. In this study, the shapes of weld bead on pipe inside and outside were predicted and its validity was investigated. On the assumption that the welding arc had a bivariate gaussian distribution, analytical solution was derived to predict the temperature distribution in pipe weld using mapping under consideration of physical relationships. The size of weld bean could be predicted from this equation and its accuracy was verified by experiments.
In case of manufacturing the high quality welds or pipeline, the full penetration weld has to be made along the weld joint. Thus the root pass welding is very important and has to be selected carefully. In this study, an experimental method for the selection of optimal welding condition was proposed in the root pass welding which was done along the V-grooved butt weld joint. This method uses the response surface analysis in which the width and height of back bead were chosen as the quality variables of the weld. The overall desirability function, which is the combined desirability function for the two quality variables, was used as the objective function for getting the optimal welding condition. In the experiments, the target values of the back bead width and the height are 6mm and zero respectively for the V-grooved butt weld joint of 8mm thickness mild steel. The optimal welding conditions could predict the back bead profile(bead width and height) as 6.003mm and -0.003mm. From a series of welding test, it was revealed that a uniform and full penetration weld bead can be obtained by adopting the optimal welding condition which was determined according to the method proposed.

In this study the heat transfer and fluid flow of the molten pool in stationary gas tungsten arc welding using argon shielding gas were investigated. Transporting phenomena from the welding arc to the base material surface, such as current density, heat flux, arc pressure and shear stress acting on the weld pool surface, were taken from the simulation results of the corresponding welding arc. Various driving forces for the weld pool convection were considered, self-induced electromagnetic, surface tension, buoyancy, and impinging plasma arc forces. Furthermore, the effect of surface depression due to the arc pressure acting on the molten pool surface was considered. Because fusion boundary has a curved and unknown shape during welding, a boundary-fitted coordinate system was adopted to precisely describe the boundary for the momentum equation. The numerical model was applied to AISI 304 stainless steel and compared with the experimental results.
Low arc weldability of aluminum alloy is enhanced by applying variable polarity TIG and the result is theoretically investigated to figure out the mechanism. Conventionally, it is well known fact that DCEP (reverse polarity) arc is effective on aluminum welding. The reason is due to oxide layer removal by plasma ion bombardment and therefore it is named as cleaning effect. Another fact of polarity characteristic is that DCEN shows higher heat input efficiency therefore conventional variable polarity arc used to apply DCEP portion as small as possible. However, higher DCEP portion shows bigger weldment in this research and it is explained by adopting a theory of arc concentration on oxide layer with tunneling effect which was not clearly mentioned before in several variable polarity TIG welding research. Disagreement between variable polarity TIG welding result and conventional arc polarity theory is rationally explained for the first time with help of electron emission theory.
Gas tungsten arc welds on Al-4 wt% Cu alloys were investigated to determine effects of gravitational orientation on the weld solidification behavior. Outward convection flows in the parallel-down weld might be inhibited because of its reverse direction with respect to the gravity vector. This resulted in abnormal 'S' shape of the trailing s-1 interface and the solidification rate (Vs), which was receded toward the weld pool center. Significant influence of gravitational orientation resulted in the variation on the weld pool shape associated with convection flows, which in turn affected solidification orientation/morphology and the primary dendrite spacing(λ$_1$).
This paper presents an analytical solution to predict the transient temperature distribution in fillet arc welding. The analytical solution is obtained by solving a transient three -dimensional heat conduction equation with convection boundary conditions on the surfaces of an infinite plate with finite thicknesses, and mapping an infinite plate onto the fillet weld geometry with energy equation. The electric arc heat input on fillet weld and on infinite plate is assumed to have a traveling bivariate Gaussian distribution. To check the validity of the solution, GTA and FCA welding experiments were performed under various welding conditions. The actual isotherms of the weldment cross - sections at various distances from the arc start point are compared with those of simulation result. As the result shows a satisfactory accuracy, this analytical solution can be used to predict the transient temperature distribution in the fiIIet weld of finite thickness under a moving bivariate Gaussian distributed heat source. The simplicity and short calculation time of the analytical solution provides rationales to use the analytical solution for modeling the welding control systems or for an optimization tool of welding process parameters.

Variable polarity (VP) arc welding is known as an effective solution for aluminum thanks to the cleaning effect, which means oxide removal, during the DCEP (direct current electrode positive) period. In this research, VP GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding) is adopted for lap joint fillet welding of 3mm thickness 5052 aluminum alloy. Various welding currents and DCEP duty cycles are applied as welding conditions with a fixed welding speed to investigate the influence of DCEP characteristics on weld bead formation. Results show a tendency of higher heat input for higher DCEP duty cycle, which result does not follow conventional arc theory because it is known that DCEN (DC electrode negative) polarity is more efficient for heat input than is DCEP. This phenomenonhas recently been reported by several VP-GTA researchers and is still controversial because the mechanism of oxide removal is not yet clear except for the previous, well-known idea of "ion bombardment", which cannot explain the situation. Finally, proper usage conditions for VP-GTAW are suggested; then, further, related theoretical topics in the field of cathode physics are brieflyintroduced.

A ferritic stainless steel, STS430, and a galvanized steel for case and frame of electronic goods are welded by resistance spot welding and resistance projection welding methods. In this study, resistance spot welding has been performed to investigate the weldability of dissimilar materials such as a ferritic stainless steel and a galvanized steel. Tensile load of the spot weld without heat treatment was 196 kN and brittle fracture occurred at interface between STS430 and nugget due to the high hardness, 380 Hv, in nugget. It was found that the hardness of as-welded nugget increased with higher cooling rate during resistance spot welding by comparing with GTA weld of same materials. Heat treatment by applying second current made nugget softened. Tensile load of heat treated weld increased and reached to 303 kN and fracture occurred at base metal, a galvanized steel.
