Combined GPS/BeiDou Positioning Performance in South Korea

  • The BeiDou is a satellite-based positioning and navigation system, which is under construction by the China Satellite Navigation Office. Until the June of 2014, the constellation of BeiDou navigation satellite system consists of 14 satellites including five geostationary earth orbit (GEO), five inclined geosynchronous earth orbit (IGSO) and four medium earth orbit (MEO). In this paper, we present the positioning results using BeiDou B1 code measurements obtained from three GNSS reference stations (BHAO, SKMA, MKPO). Combined Beidou/GPS positioning results are also compared to BeiDou and GPS only. BeiDou-only positioning errors for the east-west and north-south direction had less than 2 meter with root mean square (RMS) value. However, the positioning error for the up-down direction had larger than 10 meter at a 95% confidence level. Our results also suggest that the position precision is improved by combined BeiDou/GPS compared to BeiDou-only.

Mathematical Algorithms for Two-Dimensional Positioning Based on GPS Pseudorange Technique

  • Recently, one has realized that the threedimensional positioning technique used in GPS can be effectively applied to the modern two-dimensional positioning. Such a technique might has applied to the twodimensional positioning in fields of the mobile communication, eLORAN and the GPS jamming/ electronic warfare system. In the paper, we have studied on algorithms for two-dimensional positioning based on GPS Pseudorange Technique. The main works and results are summarized below. First, the linearized state equation was mathematically derived based on GPS pseudorange technique. Second, the geometry model with respect to triangles formed using unit-vectors were proposed for investigation of land-based radio positioning. Finally, the corresponding mathematical formulations for DOP values and covariance matrix were designed for two-dimensional positioning.

Long Baseline GPS RTK with Estimating Tropospheric Delays

  • The real-time kinematic (RTK) is one of precise positioning methods using Global Positioning System (GPS) data. In the long baseline GPS RTK, the ionospheric and tropospheric delays are critical factors for the positioning accuracy. In this paper we present RTK algorithms for long baselines more than 100 km with estimating tropospheric delays. The state vector is estimated by the extended Kalman filter. We show the experimental results of GPS RTK for various baselines (162.10, 393.37, 582.29, and 1283.57 km) by using the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute GPS data and one International GNSS Service (IGS) reference station located in Japan. As a result, we present that long baseline GPS RTK can provide the accurate positioning for users less than few centimeters.

  • In recent years, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Autonomous Vehicle Technology have actively studied around the world. In order to achieve the purpose of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and Autonomous Vehicle Technology, it must be obtained accurate and reliable positioning. However, the problem of positioning in the urban area is a low position accuracy caused by the reduction of the number of visible satellites due to high buildings. In this paper, we analyzed the availability of precise positioning system in urban area are using GPS/BDS integrated system. For this study, GPS and BDS satellite signals were collected using two low-cost receivers in the open sky and a designed software based platform for precise positioning performance analysis. And we analyzed the precise positioning performance by changing the mask angle considering the urban area. From the results, it can be confirmed that the performance of precise positioning of GPS only and BDS only decrease in the environment where mask angle is $40^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$, however, GPS/BDS integrated system maintains high performance of precise positioning.

  • Geodetic Satellite Positioning Techniques (NNSS, Transit, Doppler, VLBI, SLR etc.) still have much difficulty in surveying and necessity of point positions is being amplified in korea. Therefore some research institutes have being investigated point positioning using the GPS. In this study, 1 arranged the theory deal with point positioning using GPS carrier beat phase of dual frequency and estimated corrections of errors that be included in GPS observable. Also, 1 determined point position by the differencing scheme of GPS carrier phase, and analyzed the accuracy of point position. 1 suggested potentiality of geodetic point positioning using GPS carrier phase by comparing result of relative positioning with result of point positioning and analyzing result of network adjustment fixed any point position.

The Suggestion of Effective Measurement Techniques for Positioning Under Poor GPS Reference Network Condition

  • This research is suggesting the most effective positioning method for GPS based positioning when no GPS reference point is available in the neighborhood. For this purpose, we carried out positioning of the IGS realtime observatories in Australia in various conditions. According to the research, we were certainly assured the one reference point with a short baseline length is more effective for differential positioning than multiple reference points with a long baseline distance beyond 1,000km and suggested the precise point positioning based positioning method can be an excellent substitute when no reference point is available around an unknown point. The research result may be used as the basic data for accurate positioning in poor reference point environments, especially in Antarctica.

  • As the proliferation of smart phone, almost every user has one's own smart phone, and the user could get the global position and location based services using GPS system outdoors. But indoor positioning system using GPS does not work, and it could not detect global position using TDOA local positioning system. In this paper, a new indoor global positioning system for smart phone employing GPS receiver and electronic compass device is proposed with the TDOA local positioning system using acoustic signal, and the performance and the experimental result are described.

  • Although GNSS hardware and software technologies have been steadily advanced, it is still difficult to obtain reliable positioning results in the area with lots of signal blockage. In this study, algorithms for integrated GPS and GLONASS double difference relative positioning were developed and its performance was validated via simulations of signal blockages. We assumed that signal blockages are caused by high-rise buildings to the east, west, and south directions. And then, GPS-only and integrated GPS/GLONASS positioning accuracy was analysed in terms of 2-dimensional positioning accuracies. Compared with GPS-only positioning, the positioning accuracy of integrated GPS/GLONASS improved by 0.3-13.5 meters.

  • Nowadays it is necessary to manage the road system effectively because of the explosive increment of vehicle and goods. To resolve this problems through the fast upgrade of information about position and time of moving vehicle, the combined navigation system using GPS and complementary navigation system, i.e. INS, DR, etc. has been used. Although GPS is popular for the vehicle navigation system, this is not useful for the kinematic positioning of the vehicles in the urban canyon because of its few satellites. Therefore, this study deals with the kinematic positioning of the vehicles with GPS CORS to GPS navigation. For this, first the static single point positioning of GPS and GPS for reference station was performed to evaluate the accuracy of GPS positioning. Next, in the post-processed, the DGPS (Differential GPS) was performed for the kinematic positioning of the vehicles. So, it is expected that GPS CORS can be applicable to the control of traffic flow, the effective management of road system, and the development of ITS and it is regarded that the combined navigation system of vehicles with GPS, INS, and DR, etc. should be studied constantly.

GIS Based Advanced Positioning Technique for Mobile GPS (GIS 정보를 이용한 향상된 모바일 GPS 측위 기법)

  • GIS(Geographic Information System) based Positioning technique uses geographic information to predict which satellites are visible or invisible. GPS positioning has poor positioning accuracy in dense urban area where tall buildings block the satellite signals. In this paper, we proposed GIS based Advanced Positioning technique of Mobile GPS to resolve this problem. Particularly, this technique improves positioning accuracy in dense urban area. It is consist of ephemeris and GIS server. We will inversely estimate pseudorange by using NMEA-0183 output data of mobile GPS. After that, we can find more accurate position by using ephemeris and GIS information.
