  • In this paper, we were investigated the detectability on various specimen in self-designed test field using the GPR system with three antenna elements. The GPR system was constantly radiated 730MHz frequency. To examine the detectability on various condition, the test were experimented using different materials, size and buried depth. As an adjusted wave-propagation velocity, the location of hyperbolic curve pattern were displayed B-scan CRT. And the pattern was exactly positioned when it was compared to the real buried-depth. Therefore, we can confirm similarity between the wave-propagation velocity and previous results.

  • With the aim of global environmental monitoring we carried out GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) surveys at the Livingstion Island in Antarctica. Research area is near the Mt. Charra (340m) in Livingston Island which is located 80 km to the southwest of the King Sejong Station. We have collected 5 lines of GPR data. Two kinds of survey, CMP (Common Midpoint) surveys and common offset profiles, were performed. We classified the glacier into the three layers using electromagnetic velocity of the ice and reflection characteristic, The depth of glacier reached about $80{\~}110\;m$. Some reflectors showed the evidence of the water filled englacial drainage and volcanic ash-layers.

  • The receiving responses of a bistatic GPR system are analyzed by using three-dimensional FDTD method and equivalent network model. The conventional delta-gap feed model may be inaccurate because of neglecting the impedance matching characteristics between the antenna and the transmission line. In this paper, the feed model is improved by considering the physical characteristics of the actual GPR. The actually received voltage is calculated by employing the equivalent network model in angular frequency-domain, which is composed by using the results of three-dimensional FDTD analysis for an actual bistatic GPR system. The validity of the presented model is assured by showing the convergence of the computed results to the measured data.

  • Integrated analysis of GPR, impact echo and impulse response for detection of the rear cavity of concrete was performed on the test-bed which was made in the same scale and component ratio to the real concrete structure. GPR survey may roughly delineate the location of the cavity, but applying the IE and IR technique to the test-bed, the location was clearly identified.

  • The footing of a bridge is a very essential part that support the whole load induced by the bridge itself and the traffic as well. However, once a bridge is built, the footing is buried under soil so the footing is invisible from outside. Therefore, the safety or condition of the footing is very difficult to estimate. Not only the length of the imbedded part of the footings but also the type of footings are unknown once the design record is gone. Some nondestructive techniques can be used to evaluate invisible part of the footings but the results have not been successful yet. Using GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar), which has been used for the nondestructive evaluation in military purposes, the condition assessment of the footings have been successfully conducted in this research. The field evaluation and laboratory tests have been conducted to find effective factors in the condition assessment of the footings. The equipment and basic theory of the GPR has been presented. The field test results show that the GPR can be successfully used for the safety evaluation of the footings. More test results and field data are needed for more precise evaluation of the footings.

  • Accurate exploration of the risk factors of the ground subsidence is needed to predict and evaluate the subsidence of the surrounding ground due to the excavation of the ground. In this study, we analyzed the distribution of soil relaxation area by analyzing the behavior around the ground excavation site and simulated the GPR exploration under various conditions. As a result, Although there are some differences according to the water content, distribution of the strata and the distribution of the relaxation region were confirmed in the unsaturated soil, and it was found that there was a difficulty in the GPR exploration in the saturated soil.

  • Investigation of underwater sedimentary layers has been carried out with GPR (Ground Penetration Radar) survey. GPR survey has been proved to be very satisfactory since the target area has shallow water depth of about 2.5 m, is lake with no water flow, and the thickness of mud layer, which is a main survey target, is relatively thin. The results clearly showed the underwater sedimentary layers, which includes mud, sand, gravel and basement layer. Specially, the distribution and total amount of mud layers from the survey, which is main target of removal, can be used as a basic data for the dredging of mud layer in the area.
