The cavity behind the tunnel lining, caused by overbrake, might be cause a severe instability during tunnel construction. So backfill grouting is essentially required. GPR(Ground penetrating Radar) is widely used to identify the position and size of the cavity and to verify the effect of the backfill grouting. In this study, GPR survey with 450 MHz antenna was implied to access the effect of the backfill grouting before and after the work to the crown part of ○○ tunnel in Seoul respectively. The result of GPR survey conducted before the backfill, was revealed that cavities behind the lining were existed in the areas of 8 spans. Finally, from the GPR survey implied after backfilling, it was turned out that backfill grouting was successfully carried out. Also, GPR survey was ascertained the better contact between lining and rock base at arrangement of bar span.
Investigation of underwater sedimentary layers has been carried out with GPR (Ground Penetration Radar) survey. GPR survey has been proved to be very satisfactory since the target area has shallow water depth of about 2.5 m, is lake with no water flow, and the thickness of mud layer, which is a main survey target, is relatively thin. The results clearly showed the underwater sedimentary layers, which includes mud, sand, gravel and basement layer. Specially, the distribution and total amount of mud layers from the survey, which is main target of removal, can be used as a basic data for the dredging of mud layer in the area.

The exhaustion of our water resource due to the leakage of waterworks renders it urgent to detect water leakage effectively. In the paper, the detection of water leakage makes use of a pound-penetrating radar(GPR). The region of water leakage is implemented by an acryl box filled with methanol, and then the scale-down experiments are performed by using the GPR system developed in our laboratory. The validity of GPR experiments is assured by showing that the measured data agree well with those finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) simulated results in the same situation. The feasibility of GPR system for the detection of water leakage is investigated by displaying B-scan images according to the distribution of water leakage.
The main purpose of this paper is to describe a highly efficient common mid-point (CMP) data acquisition method for ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveying, which is intended to widen the application of GPR. The most important innovation to increase the efficiency of CMP data acquisition is continuous monitoring of the GPR antenna positions, using a real-time kinematic Global Positioning System (RTK-GPS). Survey time efficiency is improved because the automatic antenna locating system that we propose frees us from the most time-consuming process-deployment of the antenna at specified positions. Numerical experiments predicted that the data density and the CMP fold would be increased by the increased efficiency of data acquisition, which results in improved signal-to-noise ratios in the resulting data. A field experiment confirmed this hypothesis. The proposed method makes GPR surveys using CMP method more practical and popular. Furthermore, the method has the potential to supply detailed groundwater information. This is because we can convert the spatially dense dielectric constant distribution, obtained by using the CMP method we describe, into a dense physical value distribution that is closely related to such groundwater properties as water saturation.
Geophysical survey techniques, such as electromagnetic(EM), GPR, and electrical method, have been tested in the landfill area to evaluate the applicability of these methods to soil contamination measurement. The EM method has proven to be excellent on mapping the areal distribution of contaminants and the migration path for leachate. Since the field operation of EM technique is simple as well as fast, we think the EM method must be the first choice for these purposes. Electrical survey techniques have proven to be very effective on mapping sectional distribution of contaminants. Generally, the GPR method is very good on high resolution survey of shallow depth, and field data acquisition is simple, too. But the resistivity method gives better information on deep area, for example, deeper than the depth of 20 m.
An experiment was conducted using a sand and gravel-filled tank model, to investigate the influence on the GPR response of vadose zone gasoline vapor phase effects and residual gasoline distributed by a fluctuating water table. After background GPR measurements were made with only water in the tank, gasoline was injected into the bottom of the model tank to simulate a subsurface discharge from a leaking pipe or tank. Results from the experiment show the sensitivity of GPR to the changes in the moisture content and its effectiveness for monitoring minor fluctuation of the water table. The results also demonstrate a potential of GPR for detecting possible vapor phase effects of volatile hydrocarbons in the vadose zone as a function of time, and for detecting the effects of residual phase of hydrocarbons in the water saturated system. In addition, the results provide the basis for a strategy that has the potential to successfully detect and delineate LNAPL contamination at field sites where zones of residual LNAPL in the water saturated system are present in the subsurface.

Since the buried cultural relics are three-dimensional (3-D) objects in nature, 3-D survey is more preferable in archeological exploration. 3-D Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey based on very dense data in principle, however, might need much higher cost and longer time of exploration than other geophysical methods commonly used for the archeological exploration, such as magnetic and electromagnetic methods. We developed a small-scale continuous data acquisition system which consists of two sets of GPR antennas and the precise positioning device tracking the moving-path of GPR antenna automatically and continuously. Since the high cost of field work may be partly attributed to establishing many profile lines, we adopted a concept of data acquisition at arbitrary locations not along the pre-established profile lines. Besides this hardware system, we also developed several software packages in order to effectively process and visualize the 3-D data obtained by the developed system and the data acquisition concept. Using the developed system, we performed 3-D GPR survey to investigate the possible historical remains of Baekje Kingdom at Buyeo city, South Korea, prior to the excavation. Owing to the newly devised system, we could obtain 3-D GPR data of this survey area having areal extent over about $17,000m^2$ within only six-hours field work. Although the GPR data were obtained at random locations not along the pre-established profile lines, we could obtain high-resolution 3-D images showing many distinctive anomalies, which could be interpreted as old agricultural lands, waterways, and artificial structures or remains. This cast: history led us to the conclusion that 3-D GPR method is very useful not only to examine a small anomalous area but also to investigate the wider region of the archeological interests.

Pipelines are buried in urban area, and the position (depth and orientation) of buried pipeline should be clearly identified before ground excavation. Although various geophysical methods can be used to detect the buried pipeline, it is not easy to identify the exact information of pipeline due to heterogeneous ground condition. Among various non-destructive geo-exploration methods, ground penetration radar (GPR) can explore the ground subsurface rapidly with relatively low cost compared to other exploration methods. However, the exploration data obtained from GPR requires considerable experiences because interpretation is not intuitive. Recently, researches on automated detection technology for GPR data using deep learning have been conducted. However, the lack of GPR data which is essential for training makes it difficult to build up the reliable detection model. To overcome this problem, we conducted a preliminary study to improve the performance of the detection model using finite difference time domain (FDTD)-based numerical analysis. Firstly, numerical analysis was performed with homogeneous soil media having single permittivity. In case of heterogeneous ground, numerical analysis was performed considering the ground heterogeneity using fractal technique. Secondly, deep learning was carried out using convolutional neural network. Detection Model-A is trained with data set obtained from homogeneous ground. And, detection Model-B is trained with data set obtained from homogeneous ground and heterogeneous ground. As a result, it is found that the detection Model-B which is trained including heterogeneous ground shows better performance than detection Model-A. It indicates the ground heterogeneity should be considered to increase the performance of automated detection model for GPR exploration.
Purpose: Ground subsidence due to cavity can bring about various problems, such as casualties, decrease of the safety of the structures, and indirect social costs. Therefore, ground subsidence should be prevented through the exploration and recovery of the cavity under the pavements. Method: In this study, GPR exploration method was carried out on both actual roadway and mock-up site to compensate for the problems caused by excavation and restoration process. Result: This study compared the cavity scales obtained from GPR exploration results and the direct excavation of the identified cavity. It was confirmed that the predicted soil depth by GPR exploration was similar to the identified soil depth, but the predicted cavity scale by GPR exploration overestimated the longitudinal and cross-sectional widths compared to the identified cavity scale. Conclusion: Based on the correlation between the predicted cavity scales by GPR exploration, it is possible to qualitatively estimate the cavity scales using the empirical formula proposed in this study.
