  • The naturally occurring chemical indole-3-carbinol (13C), found in vegetables of the Brassica genus, is a promising anticancer agent that was shown previ- ously to induce a Gl cell cycle arrest of human breast cancer cell lines, independent of estrogen receptor signaling. The anticancer activity of 13C and the possible mechanisms of its action were explored in a human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line, HepG2. Treatment of HepG2 cells with 13C suppressed the growth of the cells. The growth sup- pression caused by 13C ($IC_{50}$/: 444$\mu$M) was found to be partially due to its ability to stop the cell cycle in HepG2 cells. Western blot analysis for the Gl phase artiest demonstrated that the expression-levels of cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk4, Cdk6) and cyclic D were reduced strongly after treatment of Hep72 cells with 13C (4007M) for 24- 72 hrs. Furthermore, I3C selectively abolished the expression of Cdk6 in a dose- and time-dependent manner, and accordingly, inhibited the phosphorylation of retinoblastoma. Interestingly, after the HepG2 cells reached their max- imal growth arrest, the level of the p21, a well-known Cdk inhibitor, increased significantly. Therefore, it could be considered that the Gl arrest of HepG2 cells treated with 13C was due to the indirect inhibition of Cdk4/6 activities by p21 Western blot analysis for G2/M phase arrest of demonstrated the levels of Cdc2 and cyclin Bl werer reduced dramatically after the treatment of HepG2 cells with 13C ($40\mu$M) for 24-72 hrs. flow cytometry of propidium iodide-stained HepG2 cells revealed that 13C induces a Gl (53%,72hr incubation) and G2 (25%,24hr incubation) cell cycle arrest. Thus, our observations have uncovered a previously undefined antiproliferative pathway for r3C that implicates Cdk4/6 and Cdc2 as a target for cell cycle control in human HepG2 cells. However, the 13C-medi- ated cell cycle arrest and repression of Cdk4/6 production did not affect the apoptotic induction of HepG2 cell.

  • In this paper, we parallelize the popular feature detection algorithms, i.e. SIFT and SURF, and its application to fast panoramic image generation on the latest embedded GPU. Parallelized algorithms are implemented using recently developed OpenCL as the embedded GPGPU software platform. We compare the implementation efficiency and speed performance of conventional OpenGL Shading Language and OpenCL. Experimental result shows that implementation on OpenCL has comparable performance with GLSL. Compared with the performance on the embedded CPU in the same application processor, the embedded GPU runs 3~4 times faster. As an example of using feature extraction, panorama image synthesis is performed on embedded GPU by applying image matching using detected features.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the linkage relationship of the resistance genes Wbph1 and Wbph2 which are known to be present in the rice cultivar N22 and ARC 10239 respectively, with the genetic markers which are identified as the specific linkage tester. Crosses were made between the resistant parents and the genetic marker stocks and their F$_2$ populations were grown out in the field. The genetic segregations of the marker character were studied and the seeds were harvested individual plant base. These F$_3$ seeds were grown into plant-line base in the greenhouse and their responses to the whitebacked planthopper were tested. Then the linkage relationship between the F$_2$ plant marker character and the F$_3$ resistance responses to the whitebacked planthopper were examined. In the F$_2$ generation of the crosses between the resistant parent N22 and the genetic marker stocks, the genetic markers, such as lg, d-t, g, la, bl and gl, showed the segregation of 3 dominance to 1 recessiveness, and the Bh marker segregated into 9:7 ratio. Another 4 marker genes, such as Cl, gh, Lh and bc, did not show the good fittness to the expected value. In the F$_2$ generation of the crosses between the resistant parent ARC 10239 and the genetic marker stocks, the genetic markers, such as Cl, lg, Pn, g, la, bl and gl, showed the segregation of 3 dominance to 1 recessiveness, and the Bh gene segregation fitted well to the 9:7. The rest 4 genetic markers, such as gh, Lh, nl and be, did not show the good fitness to the expected ratio. The resistance genes Wbphl of N22 and the Wbph2 of ARC 10239 appeared to be single dominant gene each. The Wbphl gene was linked with the marker gene, liguleless (lg) of linkage group II with the recombination value of 36.8%, and with the black hull (Bh) with the value of 35.9%. The Wbph2 gene appeared to be independent of all the markers tested here, such as Cl, lg, Pn, g, Lh, la, nl, bl, bc, gl, Bh, of linkage gtoup I, II, III, IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII respectively. That the Wbph2 linkage relations were not investigated was regarded as the causes that the tested marker genes on the chromosome were located with the resistance gene at the distant loci, and of the phenctypic properties of the marker characters. The Wbph2 linkage relations should be reexamined in the cross combinations of linkage group Ⅶ, Ⅷ, Ⅹ and XII including linkage group V which was not tested in this experiment.

  • Let R be a commutative ring with identity and S a multiplicative subset of R. First, we introduce and study the u-S-projective dimension and u-S-injective dimension of an R-module, and then explore the u-S-global dimension u-S-gl.dim(R) of a commutative ring R, i.e., the supremum of u-S-projective dimensions of all R-modules. Finally, we investigate u-S-global dimensions of factor rings and polynomial rings.

  • In this paper, current application of VR in naval architecture and ocean eng. Design is surveyed and VR process is implemented in ship navigation system. So far, very sophisticated VR applications have announced but not published yet. The reason not published may be that the application is for the navy ship of which the information could not be opened to the public. Also there is another area implementing Simulation Based Design, i..e., visualization of the integration process from initial design to the manufacturing. Herein, the tendency of VR in this area is surveyed, so the international application of VR is introduced. Trough the analysis the most appropriate applicability of VR in this area can be distinguished. And to show the application, ship navigation VR is programmed using OpenGL graphics software.

  • To visualize electrical activities in the cerebral cortex, we develop the 3D topographic mapping system based on PC. For this work, we utilize OpenGL tool and an optimized interpolation method known as 3D barycentric algotithm, which has a little computational complexity. OpenGL processes the 3D coordinates, and 3D barycentric algotithm interpolates to get overall EEGs with EEGs measured from finite electrodes on 3D. To prove validity of this algorithm on the PC-based system, we developped Windows-based 3D topographic mapping program using the Barycentric algorithm. The result showed that the performance of this system is comparable to that of workstation in terms of speed and precision. Also, the result of clinical test was the same as that of a EEG technician's analysis.

  • The hermitian structures on complex manifolds have been studied by several mathematicians ([1], [2], and [3]), and the Kähler structure on hermitian manifolds have been so much too ([6], [12], and [15]). There has been some gradual progress in studying the invariant forms on Grassmann manifolds ([17]). The purpose of this dissertation is to prove the Theorem 3.4 and the Theorem 4.7, with relation to the nature of complex Grassmann manifolds. In $\S$ 2. in order to prove the Theorem 4.7, which will be explicated further in $\S$ 4, the concepts of the hermitian structure, connection and curvature have been defined. and the characteristic nature about these were proved. (Proposition 2.3, 2.4, 2.9, 2.11, and 2.12) Two characteristics were proved in $\S$ 3. They are almost not proved before: particularly. we proved the Theorem 3.3 : $G_{k}(C^{n+k})=\frac{GL(n+k,C)}{GL(k,n,C)}=\frac{U(n+k)}{U(k){\times}U(n)}$ In $\S$ 4. we explained and proved the Theorem 4. 7 : i) Complex Grassmann manifolds are Kahlerian. ii) This Kähler form is $\pi$-fold of curvature form in hyperplane section bundle. Prior to this proof. some propositions and lemmas were proved at the same time. (Proposition 4.2, Lemma 4.3, Corollary 4.4 and Lemma 4.5).
