  • Korean government has constructed a nationwide cadastral map database through the cadastral map computerization project and also produced a variety of spatial data through the NGIS (National Geographic Information Systems) project. Under this circumstance, it is needed to set up the new automatic methodology that effectively solve cadastral non-coincidence problems by using various digital map data instead of expensive field survey methods. This study proposed a new automatic methodology for cadastral non-coincidence surveying and developed a prototype system as a proof of concept. Validation of this proposed method was done with some test areas. Results showed that this methodology could easily detect and assess both regional non-coincidence levels and cadastral map quadrangle non-coincidence levels. We expect that this new methodology can provide many benefits in planning and determining work priority of the forthcoming nationwide cadastral re-surveying project.

  • Objectives: This study examines the relationships between indoor radon concentrations and distribution from soil geological mapping in the Hwacheon and Jangsu areas. Methods: GIS and a pivot table were used for inquiries about indoor radon contents, soil characteristics, and geological differences. Results: The Hwacheon area was characterized by the presence of normal and reverse faults as a passage of runoff for radon, sufficient occurrences of minerals containing uranium within granite as a radon source, a high concentration of radon within the granite area and clear differences of radon concentrations between granitic and metamorphic areas. The Jangsu area was characterized by the presence of normal faults, wide distributions of alluvium, and ambiguities on radon concentrations indoors among areas of geological differences. Considering the granite area and alluvium surrounded with granite areas, the characteristics of radon concentrations within soils and indoors in the Jangsu area are similar to those of the Hwacheon area. High concentrations are found with entisol and inceptisol in the Hawcheon area, but with entisol, inceptisol, and ultisol in the Jangsu area. High radon concentrations are found in sandy loam and/or loam. High concentrations are found in recently constructed or brick buildings, but low concentrations in traditional or prefabricated houses showing a high possibility of outward flow. Conclusions: The overall results suggest that radon concentrations in the Hwacheon and Jangsu area are dominantly influenced by geological characteristics with additional artificial influences.

  • The weed survey in lowland rice fields through Korea was conducted in 1992 to determine a change of the weed communities based on different regions, soil types, planting methods, and cultural practices. GIS was applied to identify a spatial analysis of predominant weed species in specific region. On behalf of vegetatine analysis such as absolute and relative density, absolute and relative frequency, importance value, and summed dominance ratio(SDR), there was highly dominant with a perennial weed species, Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi over whole country. However, in particular it was most predominant at southem area of Gyunggi province in Korea. Thus, rice farmers of this area have to introduce a specific comperhensive control strategy against this predominant weed species.

  • The liquefaction is a phenomenon that the effective stress becomes zero due to the rapidly accumulated excess pore water pressure when a strong load acts on the ground for a short period of time, such as an earthquake or pile driving, resulting in the loss of the shear strength of the ground. Since the Geongju and Pohang earthquake, liquefaction brought increasing domestic attention. This liquefaction can be assessed mainly through the semi-empirical procedures proposed by Seed and Idriss (1982) and the liquefaction risk based on the penetration resistance obtained from borehole DB and SPT. However, the geotechnical information data obtained by the in-situ tests or boring information fundamentally have an issue of the representative of the target area. Therefore, this study sought to construct a ground information database by classifying and reviewing the ground information required for liquefaction assessment, and tried to solve the representative problem of the soil layer that is subject to liquefaction evaluation by performing spatial interpolation using GIS.

  • The 1st phase framework data implementation of National Geographic Information Systems (NGIS) used 1:5,000 digital map with 5 years updating period which is lacking in the latest information. This is a significant factor which hinders the use of framework data. This study proposed the efficient technical method of a location based object data management and system implementation for updating framework data. First, we did an object-oriented data modeling and database design using a location based features identifier(UFID: Unique Feature IDentifier). The second, we developed the system with various functions such as a location based UFID creation, input and output, a spatial and attribute data editing, an object based data processing using UML(Unified Modeling Language). Finally, we applied the system to the study area and got high quality data of 99% accuracy and 35% benefit effect of personnel expenses compare to the previous method. We expect that this study can contribute to the maintenance of national framework data as well as the revitalization of various GIS markets by providing user the latest framework data and that we can develop the methods of a feature-change modeling and monitoring using an object based data management.

  • The world largest land reclamation project in the name of Saemangeum(Ariul) from 1991 to the present has been implementing in a part of the west coast of Korea. In the Saemangeum reclamation project, the large-scale project cost is used for the landfill reclamation. A number of landfill reclamation methods have been studied in order to reduce the large-scale cost of the Saemangeum project under construction. There are many studies related to the on-site real-time monitoring with mobile systems for operating a wide range of landfill. In order to apply the work method for efficient cost-savings in the landfill operations to the Samangeum project, this paper develops a mobile management system that is composed of a mobile interface module, a data server module for data transmission and storage, and an analysis server module to analyze the input data and derive the results. The mobile system is designed by analysing user's and system requirements, functional interactions, and data flow using unified modeling language(UML). The user interface is developed for the on-site real-time monitoring through the status and related attributes of land reclamation by using the digital maps of the Samangeum coverage via mobile devices. Finally, a mobile management system would be developed that can provide a 3D GIS service based on the Dry Internal Project Site Digging Reclamation Method(DIPSDRM).

  • Traditional GIS-based probabilistic spatial data integration models for landslide susceptibility analysis have failed to provide the theoretical backgrounds and effective methods for integration of different types of spatial data such as categorical and continuous data. This paper applies two spatial data integration models including non-parametric empirical estimation and parametric predictive discriminant analysis models that can directly use the original continuous data within a likelihood ratio framework. Similarity rates and a prediction rate curve are computed to quantitatively compare those two models. To illustrate the proposed models, two case studies from the Jangheung and Boeun areas were carried out and analyzed. As a result of the Jangheung case study, two models showed similar prediction capabilities. On the other hand, in the Boeun area, the parametric predictive discriminant analysis model showed the better prediction capability than that from the non-parametric empirical estimation model. In conclusion, the proposed models could effectively integrate the continuous data for landslide susceptibility analysis and more case studies should be carried out to support the results from the case studies, since each model has a distinctive feature in continuous data representation.

  • Site characteristic is an important input parameter in the geologic hazard assessments including, but not limited to, earthquakes, liquefaction and landslides. Although it is a routine to use data collected by boreholes or seismic prospecting for site classifications, we used indirect methods using the geologic and the topographic maps. A site classification map in the Gyeongsang Province has been produced by GIS tools based on geologic age, rock types, and elevations from the geologic map and the topographic map of Korea. Site B (rock site) is dominant in the study area, although softer soils are observed along rivers and in reclaimed lands. We have found that 73% of the site classification results in the study are in concordance with those obtained from borehole data. Observed discrepancies are attributed to errors in the geologic and the topographic maps. For some sites, the origin of the differences is not clear, which requires a further field study or a drilling. Site classification from this study provides essential information for reliable hazard assessments of earthquakes, floods, landslides and liquefaction. Results obtained in the study also play a crucial role in land use planning for developing areas.

  • Budget distribution system suporting dam area was changed largely in 2005, and thus, population survey and area calculation for dam and needed to be performed based upon the new criteria. According to the former regulations, dam area was confined to inside of 5km from the H.W.L-line. However, new regulations divide it into two categories : inside and outside of catchment area within 2km from the H. W. L-line and those belong to 2~5km from the same line. In this study, topography, DEM, TIN and Hydrological Unit Map were build for the analysis of the Namgang Dam area. It shows that analysis of dam area using GIS methods produces a good results to be used for rational distribution of budget.

  • By the advent of the high-resolution Satellite imagery, there are increasing needs in image mosaicking technology which can be applied to various application fields such as GIS(Geographic Information system). To mosaic images, various methods such as image matching and histogram modification are needed. In this study, automated image mosaicking is performed using image matching method based on the multi-resolution wavelet analysis(MWA). Specifically, both area based and feature based matching method are embedded in the multi-resolution wavelet analysis to construct seam line.; seam points are extracted then polygon clipping method are applied to define overlapped area of two adjoining images. Before mosaicking, radiometric correction is proceeded by using histogram matching method. As a result, mosaicking area is automatically extracted by using polygon clipping method. Also, seamless image is acquired using multi-resolution wavelet analysis.
