  • Recently mean stand height has been added as new attribute to forest type maps, but it is often too costly and time consuming to manually measure 9,100,000 points from countrywide stereo aerial photos. In addition, tree heights are frequently measured around tombs and forest edges, which are poor representations of the interior tree stand. This work proposes an estimation of mean stand height using an image-based point cloud, which was extracted from stereo aerial photo with FUSION S/W. Then, a digital terrain model was created by filtering the DSM point cloud and subtracting the DTM from DSM, resulting in nDSM, which represents object heights (buildings, trees, etc.). The RMSE was calculated to compare differences in tree heights between those observed and extracted from the nDSM. The resulting RMSE of average total plot height was 0.96 m. Individual tree heights of the whole study site area were extracted using the USDA Forest Service's FUSION S/W. Finally, mean stand height was produced by averaging individual tree heights in a stand polygon of the forest type map. In order to automate the mean stand height extraction using photogrammetric methods, a module was developed as an ArcGIS add-in toolbox.

  • Owing to the GIS technology, a vast volume of spatial data has been accumulated, thereby incurring the necessity of spatial data mining techniques. In this paper, we propose a new spatial data mining system named SD-Miner. SD-Miner consists of three parts: a graphical user interface for inputs and outputs, a data mining module that processes spatial mining functionalities, a data storage model that stores and manages spatial as well as non-spatial data by using a DBMS. In particular, the data mining module provides major data mining functionalities such as spatial clustering, spatial classification, spatial characterization, and spatio-temporal association rule mining. SD-Miner has own characteristics: (1) It supports users to perform non-spatial data mining functionalities as well as spatial data mining functionalities intuitively and effectively; (2) It provides users with spatial data mining functions as a form of libraries, thereby making applications conveniently use those functions. (3) It inputs parameters for mining as a form of database tables to increase flexibility. In order to verify the practicality of our SD-Miner developed, we present meaningful results obtained by performing spatial data mining with real-world spatial data.

  • In recent, the critical rainfall duration concept is widely used but we do not have understandable criteria yet. However, the critical rainfall duration is usually calculated considering concentration time, runoff model using effective rainfall, and unit hydrograph for the estimation of design flood. This study is to derive the regression equations between the critical rainfall duration and hydrologic components such as the basin area, slope, length, CN, and so on. We use a GIS tool which is called the ArcView for the estimation of hydrologic components and the HEC-1 module which is provided in WMS model is used for the runoff computation. As the results, the basin area, basin slope, and basin length had a great influence on the estimations of peak runoff and critical rainfall duration. We also investigated the sensitivities for the peak runoff and critical duration of rainfall from the correlation analysis for the involved components in the runoff estimation.

  • Recently, various researches have been studied on the predict method of land change according to its development. The Cellular Automata(CA) is one of the most popular methods in the urban growth modeling. The basis principle of CA is to repeat operations, which convert the current cell into new cell state by the transaction rule. It will minimize the loss of data by using Fuzzy-AHP and it can lead the flexible urban growth modeling. However, AHP would have a disadvantage to repeat the procedure of the collecting intentions until it derives the weight. Also, it is necessary for the simulation of CA to repeat the operations and the test of data accuracy should be accompanied. The purpose of this study is to predict the Busan city growth model and analyze it according to the automated test method by applying CA as well as Fuzzy-AHP. This study shall improve the difficulties caused by complexity and repetitiveness in the urban grow modeling. The practical modeling could be derived from the verification, and the derived modules could be applied to the similar case studies.

  • This study aims to propose the location selection method of car-sharing services in Daejeon Metropolitan city. In order to select locations for car-sharing, Daejoen area was divided in $500m{\times}500m$ cell size using GIS Arc/Info 10, and input factors which may affect car-sharing service were determined, and then each input factor was standardized for analysis. The weight for each input factor was determined through experts' survey and index of goodness of fit was estimated in each cell ($500m{\times}500m$ size) using AHP method. Also, This study proposed the method to select 30 service facility location using Location-allocation Model in Network Analysis module. The proposed method for the location selection of car-sharing service in this study can be used for preliminary data for initial car-sharing introduction. Henceforward, appropriate demand forecasting and economic evaluation for the location selection of car-sharing service are needed for the further study.

  • In order to evaluate the Capability of ETM+ remotely- sensed data to provide 'Forest-shrub land-Rangeland' cover type map in areas near the timberline of northern forests of Iran, the data were analyzed in a portion of nearly 790 ha located in Neka-Zalemroud region. First, ortho-rectification process was used to correct the geometric errors of the image, yielding 0/68 and 0/69 pixels of RMS. error in X and Y axis, respectively. The original and panchromatic bands were fused using PANSHARP Statistical module. The ground truth map was made using 1 ha field plots in a systematic-random sampling grid, and vegetative form of trees, shrubs and rangelands was recorded as a criteria to name the plots. A set of channels including original bands, NDVI and IR/R indices and first components of PCI from visible and infrared bands, was used for classification procedure. Pair-wise divergence through CHNSEL command was used, In order to evaluate the separability of classes and selection of optimal channels. Classification was performed using ML classifier, on both original and fused data sets. Showing the best results of $67\%$ of overall accuracy, and 0/43 of Kappa coefficient in original data set. Due to the results represented above, it's concluded that ETM+ data has an intermediate capability to fulfill the spectral variations of three form- based classes over the study area.

  • This study includes determination of liquefaction potential in Erzincan city center. Erzincan Province is situated within first-degree earthquake zone on earthquake map of Turkey. In this context, the earthquake scenarios were produced using the empirical expressions. Liquefaction potential for different earthquake magnitudes (6.0, 6.5, 7.0) were determined. Liquefaction potential was investigated using Standard Penetration Test (SPT). Liquefaction potential analyses are determined in two steps: geotechnical investigations and calculations. In the first steps, boreholes were drilled to obtain disturbed and undisturbed soil samples and SPT values were obtained. Laboratory tests were made to identify geotechnical properties of soil samples. In the second step, liquefaction potential analyses were examined using two methods, namely Seed and Idriss (1971), Iwasaki et al. (1981). The liquefaction potential broadly classified into three categories, namely non-liquefiable, marginally liquefiable and liquefiable regions. Additionally, the liquefaction potential index classified into four categories, namely non-liquefiable, low, high and very high liquefiable regions. In order to liquefaction analysis complete within a short time, MATLAB program were prepared. Following the analyses, liquefaction potential index is investigated by Iwasaki et al. (1982) methods. At the final stage of this study, liquefaction potential maps and liquefaction potential index maps of the all study area by using IDW (inverse distance weighted) interpolation method in Geostatistical Analyst Module of ArcGIS 10.0 Software were prepared for different earthquake magnitudes and different depths. The results of soil liquefaction potential were evaluated in ArcGIS to map the distributions of drillings with liquefaction potential. The maps showed that there is a spatial variability in the results obtained which made it difficult to clearly separate between regional areas of high or low potential to liquefy. However, this study indicates that the presence of ground water and sandy-silty soils increases the liquefaction potential with the seismic features of the region.

  • In this paper, related on the postal business with the GIS(Geographics Information System), it discusses design and implementation of the PROS(Postal Route Optimization System) model and its main module, the shortest path generation algorithm, for supporting to postal route managements. It explains examples requirements of postal route system, and suggests the efficient PROS model using our developed shortest path generation algorithm. Because the shortest path algorithm adopts not only consider the Dijkstra algorithm of graph theory, but also the method with the direction property, PROS can be implemented with fast and efficient route search. PROS is mainly constituted of the Shortest Generator, the Isochronal Area Generator, and the Path Rearrangement Generator. It also exploits the GIS engine and the spatial DBMS (Data Base Management System) for processing coordinates in the map and geographical features. PROS can be used in the management of postal delivery business and delivery area and route, and in the rearrangement of route. In the near future, it can be also applied to commercial delivery businesses, guides of routs and traffic informations, and auto navigation system with GPS(Global Positioning System).
