  • This paper investigates optimization-based base station (BS) placement. An optimization model is defined and the BS placement problem is transformed to a lexicographical stratified programming (LSP) model for a given trajectory, according to different accuracy requirements. The feasible region for BS deployment is obtained from the positioning system requirement, which is also solved with signal coverage problem in BS placement. The LSP mathematical model is formulated with the average geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) as the criterion. To achieve an optimization solution, a tolerant factor based complete stratified series approach and grid searching method are utilized to obtain the possible optimal BS placement. Because of the LSP model utilization, the proposed algorithm has wider application scenarios with different accuracy requirements over different trajectory segments. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has better BS placement result than existing approaches for a given trajectory.

  • The Radio Navigation System(R. N. S.) has been progressed consistantly with the development of electric-electronic engineering techniques since the R. D. E had been developed in 1910. The R. N. S. mostly depends on either Hyperbolic Navigation System(H. N. S.) or Spherical Navigation System(S. N. S.) in the ocean, and on Rectangular Navigation System (R. N. S.) in the air near the airport or an a combinations of the above systems in both area. Another effective R. N. S may be the Ellipse-Hyperbola Navigation System(E-H N. S.), which is proposed and named such in this paper. The equations calculating GDOP are derived and the GDOP values are calculated in the case of H. N. S., S. N. S, and E-H. N. S., respectively, for the specified case that four transmitting stations are arranged on the apex of a square, Then the GDOP diagrams of above navigation systems are presented for qualitative comparison in this paper. To measure the distances from the receiver to the stations in S. N. S., and/or the sum of distances to two stations in E-H N. S., the time synchronization between the transmitter clocks and the receiver clock is a major premise. The author has proposed the algorithm for getting this synchronmization utilizing the by S. N. S. or E-H N. S while GDOPs of those are relatively good. Even though clock synchronization error is a voidable due to the fix error used, the simulated results shows that the position accuracy of S. N. S. and E-H N. S. by the proposed method is far upgraded compared with that determined by H. N. S. directly, as far as the outer region of transmitter arrangement is concerned.

  • The expected positioning accuracies of civil users utilizing modernized GPS and Galileo are derived using the error analysis in this paper. Since, in general, the performance of DLL, PLL and FLL is proportional to chip lengths and wavelengths, the positioning accuracies from various measurements of modernized GPS and Galileo are derived as function of chip length and wavelength. These results are compared with that from GPS Ll measurement. In absolute positioning, compared to GPS C/A code only case, more than 17 times performance improvement is expected when all civil code signals of modernized GPS and Galileo (L1, L2, L5, E1, E5A and E5B) are used. In relative positioning, compared to GPS L1 carrier phase only case, more than 2 times performance improvement is expected when all civil signals of modernized GPS and Calileo are used. Furthermore, the relationship between GDOP and RGDOP in single frequency case is expanded to general case where multiple frequencies and both code and carrier phase measurements are used.

  • There are several applications and error analysis methods using GPS(Global Positioning System) In most analysis positioning and timing errors are represented as the multiplication of DOP(Dilution Of Precision) and measurement errors, which are affected by the receiver and measurement type. Therefore, lots of DOPs are defined and used to analyze and predict the performance of positioning and timing systems. In this paper, the relationships between these DOPs are investigated in detail, The relationships between GDOP(Geometric DOP), PDOP(Position DOP) and TDOP(Time DOP) in the absolute positioning are de-rived. Using these relationships, the affect of clock bias is analyzed. The relationships between RGDOP(Relative DOP) and PDOP are also derived in relative positioning where the single difference and double dif-ference techniques are used. From the results, it is expected that using the common clock will give better performance when the single difference technique is used while the effects of clock is eliminate when the double difference technique is used. Finally, the error analyses of dual frequency receivers show that the narrow lane measurements give more accurate results than wide line of or L1. L2 independent measurements.

  • In this paper we propose extended Kalman filter (EKF)-trilateration method which associates EKF to conventional radiolocation technique, trilateration in order to improve the accuracy of dynamic orbit determination of geostationary satellite for broadcasting of highly accurate Standard Time/Frequency Signal (STFS). We then compare to analyze the time accuracies of three techniques which are differential mode, trilateration locating one of four calibrated earth stations on a neighboring country, and domestic-only baseline EKF-trilateration. Computer simulations have shown that in spite of domestic-only baseline EKF-trilateration of poor GDOP, it is possible to track and locate satellite with an accuracy of a few hundred meter which is the performance 10 times more accurate than trilateration can provide. Finally we can provide standard time service with the time accuracy better than a few ns (frequency stability : 10$\^$-14/ over 7 days) all around Korea peninsula.

  • In the eLoran navigation system, the dominant deterioration factors of navigation accuracy are the TOA measurement errors on user receiver and the GDOP between the receiver and the transmitters. But if the ASF data measured at dLoran reference station are provided for users through the Loran data channel, it will be possible to correct the TOA measurement errors. The position accuracy can be determined by the DOP depending on the geometry of receiver-transmitters, and their optimal placement improves the navigation accuracy. In this study we determined the geometric placement in case of up to six stations, and evaluated the performance of position accuracy for the receiver-transmitter geometry set of eLoran stations. The proposed geometry of eLoran stations can be referred for the construction of eLoran infrastructure meeting the capability of HEA for maritime, and time/frequency users in Korea.

  • Currently, NGII(National Geographic Information Institute) provides VRS(Virtual Reference System) service using 44 CORS(Continuously Operating Reference Stations). Since the VRS provides high-precision coordinate in a short time, the users and applications are expected to be rapidly increasing. The accuracy analysis on the VRS service, however, was not sufficiently performed yet. Therefore, in this study, the VRS data is acquired from various circumstances and its accuracy is analyzed. According to analysis, it was concluded that the VRS could be applied to public control point survey. Furthermore, it was found that the PQ(Position Quality) which represents variance of estimated coordinates rather than GDOP(Geometric Dilution of Precision) is more relevant as a factor to determine the accuracy of coordinates. Based on the analysis of data from four manufacturers (TRIMBLE, MAGELLAN, LECIA, TOPCON), it was confirmed that the standard deviations better than 3cm. Therefore, VRS Survey apply to public control point survey.

  • The carrier phase measurements from GPS and GLONASS have different characteristics and therefore, have to be processed with different methods to provide precise positions or attitudes. In this contribution, at first, a measurement model is derived which can be used to not only GLONASS only applications but also both GPS and GLONASS applications. And then an error analysis of the proposed method performed using the derived model to derive analytic relationships between GDOP, PDOP and RGDOP. Finally, an integer ambiguity resolution method which was used in GPS is expanded to GPS and GLONASS. The proposed results can be directly applied to the design and analysis of GLONASS receiver and application programs. Furthermore, it is expected that the suggested method can also be effectively applied to combine the characteristically different measurements from the future satellite navigation systems such as GPS modernization, Galileo and QZSS.
