  • This study has been carried out to understand the effect of Gangsim-tang on the hyperglycemic mice induced with Streptozotocin(STZ). The 60 mg/kg of streptozotocin(STZ) was treated into mice twice by 24 hrs interval and then 120 mg/kg STZ was treated again 3 days after the earlier treated. Control group was administered mice with 0.9% saline(2ml/kg), and experimental groups were administered Gangsim-tang extract(GA group, 10 ㎎/㎏/day; GB group, 30 mg/kg/day) after hyperglycemic induction daily for 6 weeks. The body weight of experimental groups was lower than control. The blood glucose concentration increased continuously, reaching to 298.9 mg/dl after 6 weeks, however, experimental groups of the GA and GB groups significantly(p<0.01) decreased in the 4, 5, and 6 weeks groups. Blood glucose tolerance test was not significant between control and experimental groups. We examined the blood transaminase activities to know the effect of herbal medicine on liver function. The glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase(GOT) activity was lower in group GB than in control. The glutamic-pyruvic transaminse(GPT) activity was lower in group GA and GB than in control. The superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase activities were higher in the group GA compared to control. The results of immunohistochemical study, Langerhan's islet of pancreas was destructed by treatment of STZ in the control, and a few of insulin positive cells observed in the control and experimental group. These results suggest that administration of Gangsim-tang extract to the hyperglycemic mice induced with STZ not regeneration of ${\beta}-cells$ but control of the blood glucose level.

  • Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were isolated from major Pleurotus pulmonarius cultivars in Korea, namely 'HS47' (monokaryon, gamete of 'Santari'), 'GB19' (monokaryon, gamete of 'Santari'), 'Hosan,' 'Yeoleumneutali1,' 'Sambok,' 'Gangsan,' 'Yaksan,' 'Jasan,' 'Hyangsan,' and 'Yeoleumneutali2,' and characterized via HiSeq genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. The genome sizes of the monokaryons 'HS47' and 'GB19' were estimated to be 37.3 and 37.2 Mb, respectively, and those of the other dikaryotic cultivars ranged from 47.1 to 61.1 Mb. A total of 711 (smallest) and 1,106 (1.5 times the smallest) SSRs were found in the 'HS47' and 'Gangsan' genomes, respectively. Hexanucleotide and octanucleotide motifs accounted for the top two fractions of all SSRs. CGA/TCG, A/T, and CTC/GAG were the most frequently detected nucleotides in the SSRs. Most of the SSRs were 21~30 nucleotides long (hypervariable for application), accounting for 70% of all lengths of SSRs.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Oxidative stress is a major cause of cancer. This study investigated the effects of the ethanol extracts from germinated and non-germinated Keunnunjami rice, a blackish-purple pigmented cultivar with giant embryo, on selected human cancer cell lines and on the antioxidant defense system of mice fed with a high-fat diet. MATERIALS/METHODS: High fat-fed mice were orally administered with either distilled water (HF) or extracts (0.25%, w/w) from brown (B), germinated brown (GB), Keunnunjami (K), and germinated Keunnunjami (GK) rice. RESULTS: In comparison with the brown rice extract, Keunnunjami extract showed higher anticancer effect against cervical and gastric cell lines but lower anticancer activity on liver and colon cancer cells. Mice from the HF group showed significantly higher lipid peroxidation and lower antioxidant enzyme activities than the control group. However, the oxidative stress induced by high-fat diet markedly decreased in B, GB, K, and GK groups as compared with the HF group. CONCLUSIONS: Germination may be an effective method for improving the anticancer and antioxidative properties of Keunnunjami rice and extracts from germinated Keunnunjami rice may serve as a therapeutic agent against cervical and gastric cancers and oxidative damage.

  • The impact of a considerable increase in traffic volume on the emission and concentrations of air pollutants was investigated at three beaches (Haeundae (HB), Gwanganri (GB), and Songjeong (SB)) in Busan during beach opening period (BOP) in 2011. During the BOP, passenger car was the major vehicle type, followed by taxi, and van. CO was the major contributor of total air pollutant emissions followed by NOx, VOC, and $PM_{10}$. For the temporal variation of the emission of air pollutants during the BOP, it was generally the highest in the afternoon followed by the evening and morning, except for SB. For the spatial variation of their emission, it was the highest at GB followed by SB and HB. The emissions of air pollutants during the BOP were generally higher than those during the Non-BOP, except for HB. In contrast, the significant impact of the traffic volume increase on the concentrations of air pollutants at monitoring sites near the three beaches during the BOP were not found compared to the Non-BOP due to the significant distances between monitoring sites of air pollutants and monitoring sites of traffic volume at the beaches.

  • Objectives : Effects of repetitive electroacupuncture(EA) on the pain behavior and activation of spinal glial cells were examined in the rat model of neuropathic pain. Methods : Twenty one adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into 3 groups(control group, SP6 group, ST36+GB34 group). Neuropathic pain was induced by tight ligation of L5 spinal nerve. Mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity of hind paw were tested. Immunohistochemistry was performed in spinal cord L5/6 of all groups. EA was treated once in a day from the $5^{th}$ day after surgery. Results : EA treatments applied to ST36 and GB34 reduced significantly both of mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity after 3 times of treatment throughout the experiments. In the SP6 group, the analgesic effect was also shown after 7 times of treatment. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated inhibition of microglia and astrocyte activation in the spinal cord L5/6 dorsal horn in the ST36+GB34 group. Conclusions : The present results suggest that repetitive EA exert strong analgesic effect on neuropathic pain. These analgesic effects in neuropathic pain are associated with suppressing the activation of microglia and astrocyte.

  • Objectives This study aims to report inflammatory reactions of Pharmacopuncture lubricants (CF and JsD) when administered on GB21, GB20, and TE23 in clinical trials. Methods Follow-up studies were made on each patient's clinical observation and specific managemen. Results 1. Inflammation induced by pharmacopuncture lubricants were limited to local area of administration. 2. Intensity of inflammation was depended on the patient's condition. 3. Inflammation caused pain, skin flare, and discomfort on the patient. Inflammation subsided when dissipating technique was rendered with the conventional acupuncture needle. Conclusions It appears that prolonged usage of pharmacopuncture lubricant on the specific point can induce inflammation, thus using alternative pharmacopuncture is recommended.

  • Acupuncture is so effective and simple to use in the pain and dysfunction syndrome of TMD. Acupuncture treatment is a point-specific. So, the selection of acupuncture point is very important. According to the traditional meridian theory, we select the points; local points around TMJ and mastication muscles(ST6, ST7, GB20, GB21) and remote point(LI4). And if there is another pain, one or two other points are added. Both neural and humoral mechanism play an important role in acupuncture analgesia. The discovery of spinal gate mechanisms shows somatic stimulation can induce pain inhibition. Humoral mechanism has been established from the discovery of opioid receptors and endogenous opioids. Acupuncture induces a relaxation in the patient, which further decreases the muscle tension.

  • The wide-band spiral inductor to be monolithically integrated on the AlN substrate as a choking inductor for a compact 10 Gb/s optical transmitter applications is investigated. In order to reduce the parasitic capacitance limiting the choking bandwidth, the AlN substrate is partially etched away, which is analyzed by using an equivalent circuit model. The measured $S_{21}$ transmission response of the fabricated inductor is suppressed as low as -10 dB in the frequency range of 5 to 16 GHz.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of dietary supplementation with ginseng berry, stems, and leaves on the growth performance, organ development, and blood biochemical characteristics of broilers. One hundred twenty one-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly allocated to five groups: control (CON), ginseng berry 0.5% (GB1), ginseng berry 1.0% (GB2), ginseng stems and leaves 0.5% (GLS1), and ginseng stems and leaves 1.0% (GLS2). During the grower period (1-21 d), the body weight gain of all ginseng by-product fed groups was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of the control group. During the finisher period (22-35 d), the feed intake in GLS2 was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that in the other groups, but there was no significant difference in weight gain or feed conversion ratio. No significant differences were detected among treatments when the growth performance was analyzed throughout the entire period (1-35 d). There was no significant difference in the serum biochemical profile, except for blood glucose. Glucose levels were significantly lower (p<0.05) in GLS groups, and tended to be lower in GB groups when compared to the control. Major organ weights showed no significant differences among treatment groups when compared to each other. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of ginseng by-products may improve the early growth of broiler chickens and reduce blood glucose levels.

  • This study was examined for effects of acupuncture of Chok-Samni(ST36) on the facial thermography in health subjects, The volunteers who participating in this study had taken rest for 15 mins in room temperature (19-21 ℃) before the examination and informed them what to prohibit smoking, drinking and administration of drug for the previous day, The thermography of face was taken using Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging (D.I.T.I. : Dorex, DTI-16UT1, U.S.A.) by time interval of 35 minutes at 15 min before and 20 min after acupuncture stimulation. Thermal temperature of Yangbaek(GB14), Myon-koryo(ST3) and Chichang(ST4) was measured and compared, The results showed that acupuncture of Chok-Samni(ST36) decreased the Absolute difference of temperature between Myon-koryo(ST3) and Chichang(ST4) (p<0,05, Data were represented mean±S,E.M.(n=33)), But, acupuncture of Chok-Samni(ST36) particularly decreased the absolute difference of temperature between Yangbaek(GB14) and Chichang(ST4) and particularly decreased the absolute difference of temperature between Vangbaek(GB14) and Myon-koryo(ST3) (p<0,05, Data were represented mean±S,E.M.(n=33)). Also, it was observed that acupuncture of Chok-Samni(ST36) decreased variety of the color tone of thermographic contour line and decreased thermal distribution. The results showed that acupuncture of Chok-5amni(ST36) significantly decreased the absolute difference of temperature of partial facial surface. Hereafter, study about if acupuncture of Chok-Samni(ST36) significantly decrease the absolute difference of temperature of all the areas of facial surface is requested. Also, continued study of effects of acupuncture of other meridian on the facial thermography is requested.
