Financial data such as stock index returns and exchange rates have the properties of heavy tail and asymmetry compared to normal distribution. When we estimate VaR using the GARCH model (with the conditional return distribution of normal) it shows the tendency of the lower estimation and clustering in the losses over the estimated VaR. In this paper, we argue that this problem can be resolved through the adaptation of the unbounded Johnson distribution as that of the condition return. We also compare this model with the GARCH with the conditional return distribution of normal and student-t. Using the losses exceed the ex-ante VaR, estimates, we check the validity of the GARCH models through the failure proportion test and the clustering test. We nd that the GARCH model with conditional return distribution of unbounded Johnson provides an appropriate estimation of the VaR and does not occur the clustering of violations.

In this paper, we consider a hedge portfolio based on futures of underlying asset. A classical way to estimate a hedge ratio for a hedge portfolio of a spot and futures is a regression analysis. However, a regression analysis is not capable of reflecting long-run equilibrium between a spot and futures and volatility clustering in the conditional variance of financial time series. In order to overcome such defects, we analyzed KOSPI200 index and futures using VECM-CC-GARCH model and computed a hedge ratio from the estimated conditional covariance-variance matrix. In real data analysis, we compared a regression and VECM-CC-GARCH models in terms of hedge effectiveness based on variance, value at risk and expected shortfall of log-returns of hedge portfolio. The empirical results show that the multivariate GARCH models significantly outperform a regression analysis and improve hedging effectiveness in the period of high volatility.
Conditional correlation between financial time series plays an important role in risk management, asset allocation and portfolio selection and therefore diverse efforts for modeling conditional correlations in multivariate-GARCH processes have been made in last two decades. In particular, CCC (cf. Bollerslev, 1990) and DCC(dynamic conditional correlation, cf. Engle, 2002) models have been commonly used since they are relatively parsimonious in the number of parameters involved. This article is concerned with DCC modeling for multivariate GARCH processes in comparison with CCC specification. Various multivariate financial time series are analysed to illustrate possible advantages of DCC over CCC modeling.
Volumes of research have been implemented to estimate and predict the oil price. These models, however, fail in accurately predicting oil price as a model composed of only a few observable variables is limiting. Unobservable variables and news that have been overlooked in past research, yet have a high likelihood of affecting the oil price. Hence, this paper analyses the news impact on the price. The standard GARCH model fails in capturing some important features of the data. The estimated news impact curve for the GARCH model, which imposes symmetry on the conditional variances, suggests that the conditional variance is underestimated for negative shocks and overestimated for positive shocks. Hence, this paper introduces the asymmetric or leverage volatility models, in which good news and bad news have different impact on volatility. They include the EGARCH, AGARCH, and GJR models. The empirical results showed that negative shocks introduced more volatility than positive shocks. Overall, the AGARCH and GJR were the best at capturing this asymmetric effect. Furthermore, the GJR model successfully revealed the shape of the news impact curve and was a useful approach to modeling conditional heteroscedasticity.
The news impact curve(NIC) originally proposed by Engle and Ng (1993) is a graphical representation of volatility for financial time series. The NIC is a simple but a powerful tool for identifying variability of a given time series. It is noted that the NIC is suited to symmetric volatility. Recently a lot of attention has been paid to asymmetric volatility models and therefore asymmetric version of the NIC would be useful in the field of financial time series. In this article, we propose to incorporate LASSO in constructing asymmetric NICs based on asymmetric GARCH models. In particular, bilinear GARCH models are considered and illustrated via KOSDAQ data.
The volatility is one of most important parameters in the areas of pricing of financial derivatives an measuring risks arising from a sudden change of economic circumstance. We propose a Bayesian approach to estimate the volatility varying with time under a linear model with ARMA(p, q)-GARCH(r, s) errors. This Bayesian estimate of the volatility is compared with the ML estimate. We also present the probability of existence of the unit root in the GARCH model.
In this paper, we analyse the volatilities in financial data such as stock prices and exchange rates in term of a class of nonlinear time series models. We compare the performance of Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscadastic(GARCH) , Integrated GARCH(IGARCH), Exponential GARCH(EGARCH) models by KOSPI (Korean stock Prices Index) data. The estimation for the parameters in the models was carried out by the ML methods.

In this paper, we first the compare the performance of Holt-Winters, FSARIMA, AR-GARCH and Seasonal AR-GARCH models with in the short term based data. The results of the compared data show that the Holt-Winters model outperformed other models in terms of forecasting accuracy.
This article is concerned with count time series taking values in non-negative integers. Along with the first order mean of the count time series, conditional variance (volatility) has recently been paid attention to and therefore various integer-valued GARCH(generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity) models have been suggested in the last decade. We introduce diverse integer-valued GARCH(INGARCH, for short) processes to count time series and a real data application is illustrated as a case study. In addition, zero inflated INGARCH models are discussed to accommodate zero-inflated count time series.
This paper aims at measuring how new information is incorporated into volatility estimates. Various GARCH models are compared and estimated with daily BDI(Baltic Dry Index) data. While most researchers agree that volatility is predictable, they differ on how this volatility predictability should be modelled. This study, hence, introduces the asymmetric or leverage volatility models, in which good news and bad news have different predictability for future. We provide the systematic comparison of volatility models focusing on the asymmetric effect of news on volatility. Specifically, three diagnostic tests are provided: the sign bias test, the negative size bias test, and the positive size bias test. From the Ljung-Box test statistic for twelfth-order serial correlation for the level we do not find any significant serial correlation in the unpredictable BDI. The coefficients of skewness and kurtosis both indicate that the unpredictable BDI has a distribution which is skewed to the left and significantly flat tailed. Furthermore, the Ljung-Box test statistic for twelfth-order serial correlations in the squares strongly suggests the presence of time-varying volatility. The sign bias test, the negative size bias test, and the positive size bias test strongly indicate that large positive(negative) BDI shocks cause more volatility than small ones. This paper, also, shows that three leverage models have problems in capturing the correct impact of news on volatility and that negative shocks do not cause higher volatility than positive shocks. Specifically, the GARCH model successfully reveals the shape of the news impact curve and is a useful approach to modeling conditional heteroscedasticity of daily BDI.
