This study was conducted to develop healthy foods or natural preservatives with garlic (Allium sativum L.), ginger (Zingiber officinale R.) and onion (Allium cepa L.). The polyphenol contents of garlic, ginger and onion juice were analyzed, and they were tested for antioxidative and antibacterial activities. Their antioxidative activities were investigated in terms of their electron donating activity (EDA), SOD-like activity and nitrite scavenging ablity (NSA). Their antibacterial activities were tested against four kinds of pathogenic bacteria (L. monocytogenes, S. aureus, E. coli O157:H7, and Sal. typhimurium). The yields of the garlic, ginger and onion juice were 28.2, 24.3 and 38.3 percent, and their total polyphenol contents were 1,254, 1,523 and 412 mg/100 mL, respectively. The EDAs of the garlic and ginger juice ranged from 95 to 98 percent and over 90 percent in the 40 percent diluted solution. Their SOD-like activities were 64 and 67 percent, repectively. Onion juice had lower activities in EDAs and SOD-like activity than those of garlic and ginger juice. The NSAs of the garlic, ginger and onion juice were 56.5, 52.4 and 50.2 percent, respectively. The garlic juices showed antibacterial activity against four kinds of pathogenic bacteria (L. monocytogenes, S. aureus, E. coli O157:H7 and Sal. typhimurium) and the highest such activity against Sal. typhimurium. From all the results of the experiments, it can be concluded that garlic, ginger, onion can be used as a natural preservatives and can help develope healthy foods because of their antibacterial and antioxidative activities and abundunt polyphenols.

Aflatoxins are classified as Group 1 (carcinogenic to humans) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. In this study, a total of 134 fungal strains were isolated from 65 meju samples, and two fungal isolates were selected as potential aflatoxin $B_1$ ($AFB_1$)-biodetoxification fungi. These fungi were identified as Aspergillus oryzae MAO103 and A. oryzae MAO104 by sequencing the beta-tubulin gene. The two A. oryzae strains were able to degrade more than 90% of $AFB_1$ (initial concentration: $40{\mu}g/l$) in a culture broth in 14 days. The mutagenic effects of $AFB_1$ treated with A. oryzae MAO103 and MAO104 significantly decreased to 5.7% and 6.4%, respectively, in the frame-shift mutation of Ames tests using Salmonella typhimurium TA98. The base-substituting mutagenicity of $AFB_1$ was also decreased by the two fungi. Moreover, $AFB_1$ production by Aspergillus flavus was significantly decreased by the two A. oryzae strains on soybean-based agar plates. Our data suggest that the two $AFB_1$-detoxifying A. oryzae strains have potential application to control $AFB_1$ in foods and feeds.
Honey is known to have a variety of health-promoting effects. Ethyl acetate fractions (EAFs) of four Korean domestic honeys from basswood, Korean raisin, chestnut, and acacia as well as a New Zealand manuka honey were analyzed comparatively to evaluate their antioxidative and antimelanogenic effects. The EAFs of basswood, Korean raisin, and chestnut honey had higher antioxidant capacities and tyrosinase inhibition activities than those of manuka honey. Pretreatment of B16F1 melanoma cells with EAFs at $100{\mu}g/mL$ resulted in relative retention of melanin contents as follows: acacia honey (141.0%)>basswood honey (134.3%)>manuka honey (131.5%)>Korean raisin honey (107.3%)>chestnut honey (88.0%). Intracellular tyrosinase activities of B16F1 melanoma cells were significantly (p<0.05) lowered by EAFs of Korean raisin and chestnut honey than by EAF of manuka honey. Consequently, these results suggest that Korean domestic honeys from different floral sources serve as good sources of antioxidative and antimelanogenic agents.
The purpose of this study was to characterize genetic architecture of behavior patterns in Sapsaree dogs. The breed population (n=8,256) has been constructed since 1990 over 12 generations and managed at the Sapsaree Breeding Research Institute, Gyeongsan, Korea. Seven behavioral traits were investigated for 882 individuals. The traits were classified as a quantitative or a categorical group, and heritabilities ($h^2$) and variance components were estimated under the Animal model using ASREML 2.0 software program. In general, the $h^2$ estimates of the traits ranged between 0.00 and 0.16. Strong genetic ($r_G$) and phenotypic ($r_P$) correlations were observed between nerve stability, affability and adaptability, i.e. 0.9 to 0.94 and 0.46 to 0.68, respectively. To detect significant single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) for the behavioral traits, a total of 134 and 60 samples were genotyped using the Illumina 22K CanineSNP20 and 170K CanineHD bead chips, respectively. Two datasets comprising 60 (Sap60) and 183 (Sap183) samples were analyzed, respectively, of which the latter was based on the SNPs that were embedded on both the 22K and 170K chips. To perform genome-wide association analysis, each SNP was considered with the residuals of each phenotype that were adjusted for sex and year of birth as fixed effects. A least squares based single marker regression analysis was followed by a stepwise regression procedure for the significant SNPs (p<0.01), to determine a best set of SNPs for each trait. A total of 41 SNPs were detected with the Sap183 samples for the behavior traits. The significant SNPs need to be verified using other samples, so as to be utilized to improve behavior traits via marker-assisted selection in the Sapsaree population.

In this study, convective boiling tests were conducted for enhanced tube bundles. The surface geometry consists of pores and connecting gaps. Tubes with three different pore sizes (d$_{p}$ = 0.20, 0.23 and 0.27 mm) were tested using R-123 and R-l34a for the following range: 8 kg/m$^2$s G 26 kg/m$^2$s, 10 kW/m$^2$ q0 40 kW/m$^2$and 0.1 $\chi$ 0.9. The convective boiling heat transfer coefficients were strongly dependent on heat flux with negligible dependency on mass flux or quality. For the present enhanced geometry (pores and gaps), the convective effect was apparent. The gaps of the present tubes may have served routes for the passage of two-phase mixtures, and enhanced the boiling heat transfer. The convective effect was more pronounced at a higher saturation temperature. More bubbles will be generated at a higher saturation temperature, which will lead to enhanced convective contribution. The pore size where the maximum heat transfer coefficient was obtained was larger for R-l34a (d$_{p}$ = 0.27 mm) compared with that for R-123 (d$_{p}$ = 0.23 mm). This trend was consistent with the previous pool boiling results. For the enhanced tube bundles, the convective effect was more pronounced for R-134a than for R-123. This trend was reversed for the smooth tube bundle. Possible reasoning is provided based on the bubble behavior on the tube wall. Both the modified Chen and the asymptotic model predicted the present data reasonably well. The RMSEs were 14.3% for the modified Chen model and 12.7% for the asymptotic model.model.

In this paper, pressure drop through a capillary tube is modeled to determine the length of a capillary tube for a given set of conditions. HCFC-22 and its alternatives, HFC-134a, R407B, and R410A are used as working fluids. The conditions on which the model is tested are as follows : condensing temperature; 40.0, 45.0, 50.0, $55.0^{\circ}C$, degree of subcooling;0.0, 2.5, $5.0^{\circ}C$, capillary tube exit condition;choked flow, capillary tube diameter;1.2~2.4mm, mass flow rate;5.0~50.0g/sec. The results justify the use of Stoecker's model which yields the results very close to the values in ASHRAE handbook. While McAdams' method yields much better results than Duckler's in calculating the viscosity of the fluid in 2-phase, the friction factor suggested by Stoecker seems to be the best for capillary tubes of large diameter used in residential air conditioners. For each refrigerant, 372 data with various variables are calculated by the model. The results show that capillary tube length varies very uniformly with changes in condensing temperature and degree of subcooling. Based on this fact, regression analysis is performed to determine the dependence of mass flow rate on the length and diameter of a capillary tube, condensing temperature, and degree of subcooling. Thus determined correlation yields a mean deviation of 2.36% for 1,488 data, showing an excellent agreement.
This study saw the anti-allergy effect by the immunity regulation action of Yanghyelyoonbotang (YHYBT) consists 12 kinds of herbal medicine agents. Consequently, YHYBT controlled the amount of secretion of various infla- mmatory cytokines, chemokine, monocyte chemotactic protein and histamine from cells (HMC-1, THP-1, EoL-1) stimulated by PMA, A23187 or HDM. 1. YHYBT did not show cytotoxicity on cultured human fibroblast cells under 250 ${\mu}g/m\ell$ concentration. 2. YHYBT suppressed IL-8, TNF-$\alpha$, IL-6 mRNA expression in the HMC-1 cell stimulated with PMA and A23187. 3. YHYBT significantly suppressed IL-6 release in the THP-1 and EoL-1 cell stimulated with HDM. 4. YHYBT significantly suppressed histamine release in the HMC-1 cell stimulated with PMA and A23187 in a dose-dependent. 5. YHYBT significantly suppressed $\beta$-Hexosaminidase release in the HMC-1 cell stimulated with A23187 in a dose-dependent. 6. YHYBT suppressed NF-$\kappa$B gene expression in the RBL-2H3 cell stimulated with PMA in a dose-dependent. These results suggested that YHYBT has suppressive effects on allergic reaction and pro-inflammatory cytokines in various cell lines through the regulation of immune system. YHYBT has potential to use as an antiallergic agents.

In the present study we evaluated the efficacy of a bioformulation of Streptomyces cameroonensis for control of black pod disease in cocoa and enhancement of seedling growth. The formulation developed using talc powder and cassava starch as carriers showed high shelf-life of 1.07 × 106 CFU/g after six months storage at 4℃. The formulation was tested for inhibition of spore germination in Phytophthora megakarya and showed 100% inhibition at 10% (w/v) of formulation. To determine the efficacy of the formulation, we performed an in planta assay in the greenhouse on two hybrids of cocoa seedlings, the tolerant SNK413 × (♂) T79/467 and the susceptible UPA 134× (♂) SCA 12. Detached leaf assay showed a significant reduction in the disease severity index of about 67% for the tolerant hybrid and 55% for the susceptible hybrid compared to non-treated plants. A significant enhancement in stem length, leaf surface area and root weight was observed. Analysis of biochemical markers of defense showed a significant increase in total polyphenol, flavonoid, and total protein contents. There was also significant upregulation of PR-proteins such as chitinases, peroxidases and β-1, 3-glucanases following treatment of both tolerant and susceptible hybrids, though with a higher level of synthesis in the tolerant hybrids. A significant increase was also observed in polyphenol oxidase activities in plants treated with the formulation. This work demonstrated the stability and effectiveness of the S. cameroonensis powder formulation in suppressing black pod disease in cocoa and subsequently enhancing the growth of seedlings.

Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer is one of the most commonly used herbs. Recently, the stem and leave of the plant have been interested in physiological activities because the aerial parts have been thrown away. Finding out cultivation method of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer to improve chemical ingredients and biological activities has been tried these days. In this study, different wavelengths of light emitting diode (LED) were used for a cultivation of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer. Antioxidant activities and inhibitory effect on mutagenecity of samples were evaluated. The stem and leave cultivated under blue light (BL-0) showed the strongest antioxidant activities of $3.02{\pm}0.13{\mu}g/ml$ ($EC_{50}$) and $2.18{\pm}0.18{\mu}g/ml$ ($EC_{50}$) in DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging test, respectively. Total phenolic content of BL-0 was $2.93{\pm}0.11g/100g$, the highest value between cultivation conditions. However, antioxidant activities of the stem and leave cultivated under red light were the weakest between samples. All of the stem and leave used in this study showed inhibitory effect on mutagenecity of 1-nitropyrene. BL-0 showed stronger inhibitory effects on mutagenicity of Trp-P-1, Trp-P-2, and AFB1 than samples cultivated under other conditions. Only on mutagenecity of 2-aminoanthracene, the stem and leave cultivated at 1 m apart from red light (RL-1) showed the strongest inhibitory effect. These results indicate that blue LED might be the most effective condition for improvement of physiological activities for the aerial parts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer in cultivation. The components were identified with GC/MS. Cytidine was detected only in RL-1 at 25 min of retention time and 2-bromotrimethylene glycol was detected only in BL-0 at 37 min.

In this study, the antioxidative effects, inhibitory effects on tyrosinase, and component of non-fermented and fermented Lavandula angustifolia extracts were investigated. The ethyl acetate fraction of fermented extract (5.95 ${\mu}g/mL$) showed the most prominent the free radical (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activity ($FSC_{50}$). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities ($OSC_{50}$) of L. angustifolia extracts on ROS generated in $Fe^{3+}-EDTA/H_2O_2$ system were investigated using the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay. The ethyl acetate fraction of fermented extract (1.45 ${\mu}g/mL$) showed the most prominent ROS scavenging activity. The protective effects of extract/fractions of L. angustifolia on the rose-bengal sensitized photohemolysis of human erythrocytes were investigated. The L. angustifolia extracts suppressed photohemolysis in a concentration dependent manner (1 ${\sim}$ 50 ${\mu}g/mL$). The inhibitory effect of L. angustifolia extracts on tyrosinase was investigated to assess their whitening efficacy. Inhibitory effects ($IC_{50}$) on tyrosinase were determined with ethyl acetate fraction of L. angustifolia extract (144.80 ${\mu}g/mL$) and ethyl acetate fraction of fermented extract (122.40 ${\mu}g/mL$). Fractions of ethyl acetate and fermented extracts showed both 3 band in TLC and 3 peaks, 2 peaks in HPLC (340 nm), respectively. In each chromatography, fractions of ethyl acetate both from non-fermented and fermented L. angusfifolia have rosmarinic acid in common. These results indicate that the component and content of non-fermented and fermented extracts of L. angustifolia are different. Both of the extract of L. angustifolia can be used as an antioxidant.
