Antioxidant Activities of Various Berries Ethanolic Extract (베리류 에탄올 추출물의 항산화 활성)

  • Edible berries are rich in anthocyanins and phenolic acids, compounds that possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other biological activities. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of five berries including acaiberry (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), Aronia/black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa), blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), black currant (Ribes nigrum L.), and cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) were assessed. The Aronia G (prepared by GreenField s.c.) exhibited the highest antioxidant activities as shown in total phenolic (138.81 mg CAE/g), flavonoid (3.68 mg QE/g), and anthocyanin (20.31 mg/g) contents compared to the other berries. It also showed the strongest scavenging activities such as DPPH (69.69 mg vitamin C/g) and ABTS radical scavenging activity ($757.79{\mu}mol$ trolox/g). Aronia G exhibited strong ferric reducing antioxidant power ($553.98{\mu}mol$ vitamin C/g), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity ($820.92{\mu}mol$ trolox/g). In addition, black currant and Aronia showed stronger inhibition of nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cell than the other berries. According to the above results, the Aronia and other edible berries have notably high level of antioxidant activities and they could be used as a potential source of natural antioxidants.

Can Moringa oleifera Be Used as a Protein Supplement for Ruminants?

  • The possibility of using Moringa oleifera as a ruminant protein supplement was investigated by comparison between nutritive and anti-nutritive value of its different morphological parts with that of conventionally used Leucaena leucocephala leaf meal (LL). Parameters determined were chemical composition, rumen degradable protein (RDP), acid detergent insoluble protein (ADIP), pepsin soluble protein (PESP), non-protein nitrogen (NPN) total soluble protein (TSP) and protein potentially digested in the intestine (PDI). Total phenols (TP) and total extractable tannins (TET) were also evaluated as anti-nutritive factors. In vitro gas production characteristics were measured and organic matter digestibility (OMD) was estimated basing on 24 h-gas production. Crude protein content ranged from 265-308 g/kg DM in M. oleifera leaves (MOL) and seed cake (MOC) respectively. Leucaena leucocephala and Moringa oleifera soft twigs and leaves (MOLSTL) had CP content of 236 and 195 g/kg DM while Moringa oleifera soft twigs alone (MOST) and Moringa oleifera bucks (MOB) had 160, 114 and 69.3 g/kg DM respectively. RDP was highest in (MOC) (181 g/kg DM) followed by (MOL) (177 g/kg DM) and was lowest in MOB (40 g/kg DM). The proportion of the protein that was not available to the animal (ADIP) was (p<0.05) higher in MOL and MOC (72 and 73 g/kg DM) respectively and lowest in LL (29 g/kg DM). The PDI was high in LL (74 g/kg DM) followed by MOC (55 g/kg DM) then MOL (16 g/kg DM). PESP was highest (p<0.05) in MOC followed by MOL then LL (273, 200 and 163 g/kg DM respectively). MOC exhibited highest NPN content (116 g/kg DM) and was lowest in MOB (18 g/kg DM) (p<0.05). Highly (p<0.05) TSP was observed in MOC and MOL (308 and 265 g/kg DM respectively) followed by LL (236 g/kg DM). MOL had negligible TET (20 g/kg DM) when compared with about 70 g/kg DM in LL. Highly (p<0.05) b and a+b values were observed for MOLSTL (602 and 691 g/kg DM respectively) followed by MOL (490 and 538 g/kg DM). Highest c value was observed in MOSTL followed by MOC and MOL (0.064, 0.056 and 0.053 rate/hour) respectively. OMD was highest (p<0.05) for MOSTL followed by MOC and then MOL (579, 579 and 562 g/kg DM respectively). LL exhibited lower (p<0.05) OMD (467 g/kg DM). It was concluded from this study that the high crude protein content in MOL and MOLST could be well utilized by ruminant animals and increase animal performance however, high proportion of unavailable protein to the lower gut of animals and high rumen degradable protein due to negligible tannin content render it a relatively poor protein supplement for ruminants. MOC can be a best alternative protein supplement to leaves and leaves and soft twigs for ruminants.

  • High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was applied for determination of guanine plus cytosine (G + C) contents of DNA of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens. By values of G + C contents, a reference strain and 20 wild strains of B. fibrisolvens were classified into at least two distinct subgroups, i.e. G + C contents of 18 strains were 38-40 mol% and those of 3 strains including the reference strain were 43-45 mol%. Clear relationships were not observed between G + C contents and biological properties of 21 strains of B. Fibrisolvens.

Growth and Maturation of a Green Alga, Caulerpa okamurae Weber van Bosse (옥덩굴(CAULERPA OKAMURAE WEBER VAN BOSSE)의 생장과 성숙)

  • Seasonal growth and maturation process of Caulerpa okamurae were investigated in natural populations and in culture. Monthly sampling was carried out by SCUBA diving at Baekunpo, Busan, southeastern coast of Korea from November 1999 to October 2001. Growth of erect branches depended mainly on the water temperature in the natural habitat. Maximum length of erect branches was 14.0 $\pm$ 1.4 cm in June 2001 when the water temperature was 19.7$^{\circ}C$ and minimum was 2.8$\pm$0.2 cm in April when the water temperature was 14.7$^{\circ}C$. Fresh weight of erect branches was 3.9 $\pm$ 0.5 g in June 2001 and 0.2 $\pm$ 0.04 g in September 2000. Biomass of the population was maximum of 922.5 g dw${\cdot}m^{-2}$ in July and minimum of 125.6 g dw${\cdot}m^{-2}$ in April. Gametangial network was observed on the ramuli when the water temperature was over 19$^{\circ}C$ in August 2000 and June 2001. In the culture regime of 4 temperatures (15, 20, 25 and 30$^{\circ}C$) and 3 irradiances (20, 50 and 80 $\mu$mol${\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) combination, the maturation of excised erect branches was mainly affected by temperature. Maturation was induced under all irradiance conditions at 20 and 25$^{\circ}C$; under 80 $\mu$mol${\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ at 15$^{\circ}C$; and under 20 $\mu$mol${\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ at 30$^{\circ}C$. The highest rate of maturation was 64% under 20 $\mu$mol${\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ at 25$^{\circ}C$. These results suggested that developmental initiations of C. okamurae occurred at higher than 13$^{\circ}C$ and maturation took about 270 degree-days.

Purified Polysaccharide Activating the Complement System from Leaves of Diospyos kaki L. (감잎(Diospyos kaki L.)으로부터 정제한 보체계 활성화 다당류)

  • Cold and hot water fractions of Diospyros kaki were screened to determine its anti-complementary activity. Flour of Diospyros kaki leaf (250 g) was boiled at $100^{\circ}C$ for 3 h and passed through a membrane of 10 kDa molecular weight (DK-0). DK-0 was precipitated with ethanol and refluxed with methanol to obtain the crude polysaccharide (DKC). DKC-1 was isolated by ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-Toyopearl 650C, and DKC-1c was purified from DKC-1 by size exclusion chromatography on Bio gel P-60. The anti-complementary activities of DKC-1c at $1000\;{\mu}g/mL$ were 85.4 and 61.1% via whole and alternative pathways, respectively. DKC-1c was determined as a neutral polysaccharide composed of glucose (29.0 mol.%), arabinose (24.3 mol.%), and galactose (16.2 mol.%) with the molecular weight of 66.6 kDa. Results of agarose gel immunoelectrophoresis revealed DKC-1c, as a complement activator, cleaved C3 into C3a and C3b via both pathways.

Characteristics of Water-Based Magnetic Fluid Using Saturated Fatty Acids (포화지방산에 의한 수상자성유체의 분산특성)

  • The water-based magentic fluids were successfully prepared with the synthesized ultrafine magnetite using saturated with fatty acids($C_{9}~C_{18}$) and SDBS as surfactants. The dispersion index of water-based fluids was about 85 % when the amounts of lauric acid and SDBS for the 27 g of magnetite were more than $2.66{\times}10^{-2}mol$ and 5 g($7.17{\times}10^{-2}mol$) respectively. As the solid content increased from 0.05 g/cc to 0.4 g/cc, saturated magnetization of magnetic fluids at 5 kOe increased from 2.07 emu/g to 9.31 emu/g and its viscosity increased from 1.20 cp to 3.95 cp. The stable pH region in which the magnetic fluids prepared with lauric acid and SDBS was range of 3.1 to 11.1. It was found that the water-based magnetic fluids was well dispersed as the carbon length of fatty acid increased, but the amount of scum of the magnetic fluids increased.

  • D.c conductivity and optical transmittance of amorphous ($As_2Se_3$)Ag, (x =0, 2, 5, 10mol%) thin films were measured in order to find effects of Ag additives on electrical and optical properties of the films. The d.c. activation energy and the optical gap decreased with increasing Ag contents the Urbach tail was approximately unchangeable for variation of Ag contents. For Ag contents of 5mol% and less, the rate of decrease of the d.c activation energy was more rapidly than that of the optical gap with increasing Ag contents. For Ag contents more than 5mol%, the rate of decrease of the d.c activation energy and the optical gap were nearly the same each other with decreasing Ag contents. So it was appeared that the Fermi level of the films comes close to the mobility edge for Ag contents of 5mol% and less, and the mobility edge comes close the Fermi level for Ag contents more than 5mol%.

  • Poly(phenylene sulfide-co-phenylene sulfide sulfone), PPS/PPSS copolymers were synthesized from p-dichlobenzene(DCB), p-dibromobenzene(DBB), p-diiodobenzene(DIB), 4-chlorophenyl sulfone(CPS) and sodium sulfide as comonomers under high temperature and pressure utilizing N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone(NMP) as solvent. The yield of PPS/PPSS copolymer shoed maximum at $190^{\circ}C$ with [DBB]/[CPS] and [DIB]/[CPS] comonomer pair, while [DCB]/[CPS] pair exhibited maximum yield at $230^{\circ}C$. The change of yield is in the order of I>Br>Cl as leaving groups were in accordance with nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction mechanism suggested for the synthesis of PPS type polymers. The molecular weight of PPS/PPSS copolymer was the highest($M_w=8,330g/mol$) with [DBB]/[CPS] comonomers in which [CPS] was 10 mole%. The PPS/PPSS copolymer made with 10 mole% of [CPS] showed about $15^{\circ}C$ higher $T_g$ and $15^{\circ}C$ lower $T_m$ than those of PPS homopolymer, which may be useful from the processing and thermal property point of view. The PPS/PPSS copolymer with 30 mole% of CPS or above did not exhibit Tm. The PPS/PPSS copolymer obtained with comonomer feed ratio of [DBB]/[CPS] = 95/5 mole% under $240^{\circ}C$ showed even higher molecular weight($M_w=10,300g/mole$) than PPS homopolymer made under similar reaction condition, retaining high crystallinity and thermal stability.

Ab Initio Studies on the $(HF)_2(CO)$ Trimers ($(HF)_2(CO)$ 분자착물에 관한 Ab Initio 연구)

  • The HF-SCF, MP2 and B3LYP calculations have been performed on the two conceivable clusters $(HF)_2(CO)$ trimers as well as their dimer complexes FH…FH, FH…CO and FH…OC applying $6-31+G^{\ast}^{\ast}$, and $6-311+G^{\ast}^{\ast}$ basis sets. A variety of ground state properties of these trimer complexes have been listed, and compared with corresponding properties of isolated monomers and combined dimers. It was calculated that FH…CO is more stable than FH…OC by average 0.85 kcal/mol and F-H…F-H…C≡O is more stable than F-H…F-H…O≡C by 1-2 kcal/mol. The C≡O stretching bands of the F-H…F-H…C≡O and F-H…F-H…O≡C were red shifted by 24, $37\;cm^{-1}$ compared with the FH…CO and FH…OC respectively. Also, H-F stretching bands were red shifted by 54 and $353\;cm^{-1}$.

Preparation of V3.5+ Electrolyte for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries using Carbon Supported Pt Dendrites Catalyst (카본 담지 백금 덴드라이트 촉매를 이용한 바나듐 레독스 흐름전지용 3.5가 바나듐 전해질의 제조)

  • In this study, impurity free V3.5+ electrolytes were prepared using formic acid as a reducing agent and PtD/C as a catalyst and it was applied to VRFB. The well-oriented 3D dendrite structure of the PtD/C catalyst showed high catalytic activity in formic acid oxidation reaction and vanadium reduction reaction. As a result, the conversion ratio of electrolyte using the PtD/C was 2.73 mol g-1 h-1, which was higher than that of 1.67 mol g-1 h-1 of Pt/C prepared by the polyol method. In addition, in the VRFB charging and discharging experiment, the V3.5+ electrolyte produced by the catalytic reaction showed the same performance as the standard V3.5+ electrolyte prepared by the electrolytic method, thus proving that it can be used as an electrolyte for VRFB.
