  • This paper describes the application scheme of resistive HTS-FCL(High Temperature Superconducting-Fault Current Limiter) on future new distribution system. Future new distribution system means the power system to which applies the 22.9kV HTS cable with low-voltage and mass-capacity characteristics replacing the 154kv conventional cable in addition to HTS transformer and HTS-FCL. The fault current of future new distribution system will increase greatly because of the inherent characteristics of HTS transformer/cable and applications of distributed generations and spot networks and so on. This means that the HTS-FCL is necessary to reduce the fault current below the breaking capacity. This paper studies the appropriate location, parameters and the influences of HTS-FCL on future new distribution system. Finally, this paper suggests the reasonable basic parameters of resistive HTS-FCL for future KEPCO new distribution system.

  • It is anticipated that AC distribution system can be replaced by DC distribution system in the near future because of the operation of various distributed source or microgrid system. However DC distribution system replacing 22.9kV AC distribution line is not sufficiently studied still. This paper describes lightning overvoltage analysis among many research fields should be studied to realize DC overhead distribution systems. DC distribution system is modeled using EMTP and overvoltage is analyzed according to interval of arrestor location, earth interval of overhead grounding wire and grounding resistance. It is evaluated that analysis results can be effectively used to design of future DC distribution system.

  • Despite the exponential throughput improvement in mobile communications systems, their ability to satisfy requirements of state-of-the-art and future applications of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is still under investigation. Challenges are mainly due to the inadequacy of third generation partnership project (3GPP) networks to support large amounts of devices simultaneously, while the number of AMI end-devices and the frequency of their data transmission increase with new AMI-based applications. In this introductory survey, innovative and future AMI applications and their communication requirements are first reviewed. Then, we identify challenges of 3GPP long term evolution (LTE) in enabling future AMI applications. More importantly, the latest improvements to LTE-A standard release 12 and 13 are reviewed and analyzed with regards to their potential to improve the quality of LTE-enabled AMI. It is found that 3GPP enhancements on machine type communications (MTC) standards will significantly enhance AMI communications. Beyond MTC specifications, non-MTC-specific enhancements such as carrier aggregation and multi-connectivity for user equipment will also contribute greatly to improving reliability and availability of AMI devices. The paper's focus is towards improved backhaul support for innovative and future AMI applications, beyond traditional automatic meter reading.

  • Electric utility companies have the responsibility of providing good electricity for their customers. They have introduced the DAS(Distribution Automation System) to automate the power distribution networks. DAS engineers require state-of-the-art applications, such as a way to actively manage the distribution system and gain economic benefits from a flexible DAS architectural design. The existing DAS is not capable of handling these needs. It requires operator intervention whenever feeder overloading is detected while operator error could cause the feeder overload area to be extended. It also utilizes a closed architecture and it is therefore difficult to meet the system migration and future enhancement requirements. This paper represents a web based, platform-independent, flexible DAS architectural design and active database application. Recent advanced Internet technologies are fully utilized in this new DAS architecture allowing it to meet the system migration and future enhancement requirements. By using an active database, the DAS can minimize the feeder overloading area in the distribution system without operator intervention, thereby minimizing mistakes due to operator error.

  • A proactive approach on environmental issues may be one of critical competitive factors for global business in near future. Especially, distribution systems are very related to the various environmental issues, including development of green products and packaging, selection of the transportation vehicles and pallets, design of retail stores and distribution facilities, participation for solving the local environmental problems, and so on. In order to approach the environmental issues on distribution systems, for the first time managers need to understand the strategic framework for green management and then, to find the key success factors of leading companies in this field. Finally, future directions of strategic green management on distribution systems are discussed and shared.

  • This paper analyzed distribution network reliability related with the increment of outages and duration time according to distribution facilities increasing. KEPCO introduced distribution automation system in 1998 which could recognize outage section by remotely monitoring the fault current and reduce the blackout area by remotely controlling distribution switches. As the result of this outage time reduction using distribution automation system, the minimum distribution automation rate was fined out in this paper on the base of analyzing diverse data and how many switches were used in distribution system to improve distribution network reliability at the situation of distribution facilities increasing. This result can be used as the model that an overseas utility company applies distribution automation system in the future.

  • This paper describes the construction scheme of new distribution system using HTS(High Temperature Superconducting) power equipments such as cable, transformer and FCL(fault current limiter). At present, one of the most serious problems in distribution power system, especially for metropolitan complex city, is to obtain the ROW for cable line routes, space for downtown substations and satisfy the environmental protection caused by NIMBY phenomena. Unfortunately, it is expected that this situation will get more and more worse. As the HTS technology to apply in power system Is developed, HTS cable utilizing mass-capacity characteristic can be a useful countermeasure to overcome this problem. This paper describes the application methodology of 22.9kV HTS cable with low-voltage, mass-capacity characteristics replacing the 154kV conventional cable. By applying 22.9kV HTS cable, the HTS transformer with higher capacity for the reduction of space and transformer numbers of downtown substation is necessary. Also, if the leakage Impedance of HTS transformer is same as or lower than that of conventional transformer, the fault current of 22.9kV bus will increase because the HTS transformer capacity is larger than that of the conventional transformer. This means the parallel application of HTS-FCL to reduce the fault current in addition to the HTS cable and transformer can be necessary. With the basic construction scheme of new distribution system, this paper describes the future study points to realize this new distribution system using HTS equipments.

  • A large system predictor, which can perform prediction of sales trend in a huge number of distribution centers, is presented using neural predictive model. There are 20,000 number of distribution centers, and each distribution center need to forecast future demand in order to establish a reasonable inventory policy. Therefore, the number of forecasting models corresponds to the number of distribution centers, which is not possible to estimate that kind of huge number of accurate models in ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)module. Multilayer neural net as universal approximation is employed for fitting the prediction model. In order to improve prediction accuracy, a sequential simulation procedure is performed to get appropriate network structure and also to improve forecasting accuracy. The proposed simulation procedure includes neural structure identification and virtual predictive model generation. The predictive model generation consists of generating virtual signals and estimating predictive model. The virtual predictive model plays a key role in tuning the real model by absorbing the real model errors. The complement approach, based on real and virtual model, could forecast the future demands of various distribution centers.
