  • This study focuses on the funeral rites for Queen Wongyeong during the early Joseon period as part of a review of the changes in the state funeral system and ceremonial procedures. Conducted by the king in his role as chief mourner, the state funeral for King Taejong's wife Queen Wongyeong that emerged during the 2nd year of King Sejong marked the first example recorded in the sillok (Annals of the Joseon Dynasty) of the three year-mourning rite being applied. In terms of the clothing for the state funeral, the significance of Jolgok (a rite conducted on the 100th day following the day of death) was emphasized, while the existing yeokwolje (period of wearing mourning clothes, one month was equated with one day) was abandoned. The existing temporary office system for state funerals was reorganized into a three-office system consisting of the Binjeon dogam (Office for Chapel of Rest), Gukjang dogam (Office for Funeral Rites), and Salleung dogam (Office for the Establishment of Royal Tombs). Buddhism-related rites greatly decreased and were increasingly regulated. The ceremonial procedures were also modified in accordance with the rites directly conducted by the king during the three-year mourning period. The basic pattern of the ceremonial procedure consisted of kneeling / wailing - salute - kneeling/ wailing, and, based on the wuje (rites to console the deceased), was divided into 'make offerings to the deceased' (奠, jeon) and 'hold a memorial service for the deceased' (祭, je). This reflected the differing perceptions of jeon (奠) and je (祭) following the establishment of auspicious rites (gillye) during the reign of King Taejong. In short, the state funeral for Queen Wongyeong provides materials with which to analyze the establishment of the funeral rites and ceremonial procedures designed based on the actual three-year mourning period observed by the king, study the ritual ceremonies conducted during the ancient period, as well as foster an understanding of ancient systems.

A Semiotic Approach to Korean Ceremonial Dress (II) - Focusing on Mourning Dresses in Chosun Dynasty - (한국의례복식의 기호학적 분석 (II) - 조선시대 상례복식을 중심으로 -)

  • Through this study I would like to examine the meaning system of the symbolized codes related with real costume figures of the abstract concept of the style of the mourning ceremonial dress in Chosun Dynasty as a variable cause of communication through non-language method by the structural analysis of coding of the ceremonial dress style and the meaning system of the codes centering on the traditional book of funeral etiquette dealing with hueneral cereony in the period. To achieve this purpose, I have used the symbolic theory of constructive concept by F. de Saussure, cultural notation theory of Roland Barthes & Umberto Eco, and structural style of costumes by Myung-Sook Han. The result of the study is as follows. 1. As Chosun Dynasty was a society in which people considered courtesy so much important and practiced the basic Confucian ideas of the three bonds and five moral disciplines in human relations, the characteristic of funeral rites in Chosun Dynasty consists in expression of the thoughts of moral ethics & relative systems and systems of clan rules, etc which was a langue determining the symbols of mourning ceremony dress because the mourning ceremony dress in the period should have the feature of a langue. The mourning ceremonial dresses in the period had five grades of the consume and the grades were determined to be classified into five levels according to the clan system of the chief mourner with sang, ha bang. And the method of the association of the mourning ceremonial dress codes had the six principles of Chinchin, Jonjon, Myoungboon, Chulip, Changyu, and Jongbok. 2. Regarding the mourning ceremonial costumes in Korean society, the meaning of funeral ceremony was expressed by the signifier and materials of the mourning costumes in the society. During the process of the funeral, the intangible feeling of condolence was the expression of mourning and the tangible mourning ceremonial dress was the signal with the lamentation meaning. Especially, characters and patterns were removed from the mourning ceremonial dresses in spite of their function of symbols and the styles of costumes were emphasized. Especially the meaning of condolences was symbolized by attachment of some small pieces of cloth on the upper garments. Hemp was mainly emphasized to be the material of the costumes and some different meanings showed according to the quality of the material hemp. The mourning ceremonial dresses were distinguished from ordinary dresses, which were emphasized because they gad some symbolic meaning of the mourning. 3. Considering the association of the synthetic relations of the costumes from the viewpoint that the mourning ceremonial dresses would be classified according to a system, the symbolization of them were avaliable by sex according to how to combine them and there were no distinction between social classes in the society.

  • This study examines the pattern of changes in the funeral rites·ancestral memorial rites as stipulated in the current family rites Act and seeks to study the presentation of problems and securing effectiveness. Acts and subordinate statutes such as "Act on family rite establishment and related assistance" were enacted with the aim of rationalizing the ritual procedures of funeral rites related to the ancestral memorial rites and supporting and coordinating projects and activities for the dissemination and settlement of sound family rites to eliminate the ostentation and create a sound social atmosphere. In order to realize the true meaning of family rites the "General standards for sound family rites" were set to be solemn and simple in the process of family rites, and the government officials, employees of public institutions, organizations, and social leaders were required to take the initiative and follow the example. However, looking at the changes since the family rites Act 1969, there are regulations on gender discrimination that undermine the realization of gender equality, and the progress of education for the spread and settlement of the family rites Act has been limited in effectiveness due th lack of punishment provisions for educational institutions of all levels, In particular, even in the "Process to train funeral director" which is operated under the national qualification system, there is a lack of education on family rituals. Therefore, through this study, we intend to provide a basis for practice and developmental discussions consistent with the objectives of the establishment of laws and systems.

Improving Memorial Services for Sustainable Forest Burials (지속가능한 수목장림을 위한 추모 서비스 개선방안)

  • Currently, social interest in post-cremation funerals is growing due to the establishment of cremation culture. In addition, as awareness of nature-friendly funeral methods spreads in modern times, the demand for tree burial grounds and tree groves, which are representative natural burial methods, is increasing. However, if the current method of relying on trees is used, the forest burial may damage the forest and turn it into another cemetery. The tree decoration is a funeral method that contains the temporal meaning of humans returning to the space of nature that we have, and the philosophical meaning that humans return in compliance with nature. Like this, there are quite a few concerns. Even though tree burials are not the traditional burial facilities we are familiar with, many of the facilities and operating systems adopt the standards of park cemeteries and have stricter standards and restrictions than natural burials under the law. This rigidity is intended to preserve the forest, but the reality is that it limits the expansion and operation of tree plantations. To this end, this study seeks to find specific improvement measures for sustainable tree plantation operation. To this end, we look at the types of natural fields in foreign countries and find directions for tree planting that can be effectively applied and established in accordance with the sentiments of the people. Specific improvement measures include an enshrinement method that does not rely on memorial trees, the operation of anonymous or anonymous tree planting, a change in the method of visiting and commemorating, and various mountaineering methods, thereby suggesting alternatives to sustainable tree planting in Korea. The place where tree planting is implemented is the forest, that is, the forest itself. I should be a place where the spirit of natural return, which is the essence of the deceased, can be celebrated through the forest, not a funeral facility. By doing so, it will be possible to provide the public value of the forest, that is, the social function of the forest, in the name of an eco-friendly funeral service.

  • Korean traditional practice that gets a gravesite for burial and reckless grave establishment not only obstructs systematic national land management and reasonable urban development, but also causes a serious factor which has a harmful effect on natural environment and residential space in reality that our country is limited in area and national and social bases for use and establishment of graves are still inadequite. Though government and local governments have tried to cope with these problems by enacting legislation on funeral and others and so forth, they still have a variety of problems due to the shortage of grave management systems and information of accumulated individual graves. This study describes about the development of a GIS-based grave management system for making administrative management for individual cemeteries the prime object. As a result of application to a pilot area, the system developed in this study was able to be applied for supporting the time-limited burial system and managing cemeteries for those who left no relatives behind by constructing the database with grave-related position/attribute information which are collected by administrative system or direct survey. In addition, it is expected that this system will be utilized as a systematic management method that can be handed down the present or the future descendants under the tradition of the family-oriented funeral culture.

  • $P_2O_5-SnO_2$ system $0.5SnO_2-xP_2O_5-(0.5-x)B_2O_3$(x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) glasses have been prepared for Pb-free low temperature glass frit. A investigation about the effect of $B_2O_3$ substitution on properties of $P_2O_5$ glasses, including glass structure properties, thermal properties, and mechanical properties was presented. Substance that is responsible for in moisture absorption existing circumstances supposes by phosphate, and excess moisture tolerance that state funeral's structure is improved breaking does not affect in state funeral bond that only most single bond remains, and can know that does not suffer big impact in boric oxide anomaly present state. This phenomenon estimates that connect with structure change. It is thought according to link this result the phosphoric acid happened structural change. $B_2O_3$ displacement quantity 0.3 mole put out $BO_4$ structures, but above 0.3 mole it changed with the case $BO_3$ structure which it displaces.

Business Model for the Condolence Service using the Images (영상물을 이용한 조문 서비스를 위한 비즈니스 모델)

  • In daily life if a condoler receive a notice of a person's death who he/she know, he/she generally have the deepest regret and offer condolence money. Also an enterpriser or private chairman send a floral tribute. But it has some problem to occur a abuse according in reuse and an environmental pollution in process of trash. In this paper it is suggested an business model for the condolence service using images, floral tributes and letters of condolence made of images, in the funeral place which is an alternation to reduce the problem. And it is structured and implemented a service model that displays floral tributes made of dynamic images to a large monitor installed on wall in condoler room of funeral place. As a result it is showed that a service of floral tributes made of images may be realized to be given web site of servicing images for the condolence.

  • The cost-benefit analysis is a technique for assisting with decision about the use of society's scare resources. There exists no detailed assessment like cost-benefit analysis. But recently, many policy analysts criticized the merit of cost-benefit analysis. As it is, it can be said that partial or approximate estimates of benefit and cost may be more dangerous than helpful. The purpose of this study is to overcome the limit of traditional cost-benefit analysis. For this purpose, we use the system dynamics approach for setting up new cost-benefit analysis, which we named that ‘Dynamics Cost-Benefit Analysis'. The usefulness of ‘Dynamics Cost-Benefit Analysis' is as follows; finding structural causal relationship between cost factors and benefit factors, understanding the long-term behavior of systems economic feasibility. In this study, we apply 'Dynamic Cost-Benefit Analysis' to case that is construction investment of funeral house by local government sector.
