Purpose: This study conducts quantitative evaluation or structural and functional characteristics or normal skeletal muscle with ultrasound image and surface electromyography, and is to provide basic materials for utilizing ultrasound image analysis in physical therapy diagnosis and assessment of skeletal muscle. Methods: Measurement of three stages was conducted with 88 normal adults between their twenties and seventies, correlations and differences using collected data according to age and gender were compared and correlations among measured items were analyzed and then the following conclusions were obtained. Results: Analysis of ultrasound image of normal skeletal muscle showed that density, median frequency had the closest relations with age. In addition, it was found that there were high correlations between density explaining structural characteristics of skeletal muscle and median frequency explaining functional characteristics. Conclusion: Analysis of ultrasound image makes complex evaluation of structure and function of skeletal muscle possible when it is connected with functional evaluation method using physical measurement surface electromyography as well as quantitative evaluation of structural changes of skeletal muscle and is effective in complementing physical therapy diagnosis centering around functionality evaluation.

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to find the effect of intensive therapy on gross motor function measure(GMFM) score in cerebral palsy. Methods:Twenty eight cerebral palsy children were recruited in this study. Gross motor Function Measure(GMFM) score and Gross motor Function Classification System(GMFCS) were used to evaluate as functional change and functional level. Intensive therapy period for cerebral palsy children was 3, 4, and 5 weeks. Statistical analysis was used paired T test and one way ANOVA to know change between pre and post therapy was used. Results:GMFM Score of pre- and post- intensive therapy showed the statistically significant difference. Intensive therapy period indicated the statistically significant difference in GMFM score. GMFCS level did not reveal statistically significant difference in GMFM score. Conclusion:Intensive therapy was effective on gross motor function measure(GMFM) score in cerebral palsy.
Background: Patients after rotator cuff (RC) surgery experienced pain, weakness and limited of motion of the shoulder. Physical therapists have used heat therapy, electrotherapy, range of motion (ROM) exercise and other methods to treat patients after RC surgery. In addition, functional taping is also used to support joint movement and to increase shoulder joint stability. Objects: The purpose of this study was to determine the initial effects of functional taping using non-elastic tape on pain, strength and ROM of the shoulder following RC surgery. Methods: Forty-eight patients with who underwent RC surgery volunteered for this study. The subjects were randomly divided into an experimental group (EG, $n_1=25$) and a control group (CG, $n_2=23$). First, non-allergic tape was applied to the shoulder to prevent skin irritation. The EG applied functional taping using non-elastic tape and the CG applied sham taping using elastic tape. Assessment tools included the shoulder pain and disability index for functional activity score, visual analog scale for level of pain, shoulder muscle strength, hand grip strength and ROM testing. Results: Pain score in the both group significantly decreased (p<.05), and change in pain score of in the EG increased significantly than in the CG (p<.05). Shoulder strength and ROM in the both group significantly increased (p<.05). Especially external rotation and extension of the shoulder ROM in the EG increased significantly more than in the CG (p<.05), but the rate of change in the two groups showed no significant difference. Conclusion: These results suggest that functional taping using non-elastic tape was initially effective in decreasing pain score level in patients with RC surgery.

Purpose : In this study, stroke patients' limits of stability and functional reach test and tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius muscle of lower extremity muscle activities to evaluate the correlation. Methods : 30 adult stroke patients to participate in this study. Limits of stability were measured using biorescue, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscle of muscles activities were measured with functional reach test when there was movement. Results : Limits of stability and functional reach test (r=0.753, p<0.01), RMS value of the limits of stability and tibialis anterior muscle (r=0.706, p<0.01), RMS value of the limits of stability and gastrocnemius muscle (r=0.766, p<0.01), RMS value of the functional reach test and tibialis anterior muscle (r=0.835, p<0.01), RMS value of the functional reach test and gastrocnemius muscle (r=0.663, p<0.01), RMS value of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscle (r=0.816, p<0.01) correlations are shown as statistically significant. Conclusion : The balance and lower extremity muscle activities of stroke patients were studied, and were positively correlated with the RMS value of the limits of stability and functional reach test, tibialis anterior muscle, and gastrocnemius muscle. This study has shown that stroke patients' ankle joint muscle activity can greatly.
Mortality rates from stroke have been declining. Because of this, more people are living with residual disability. Rehabilitation plays an important role in functional recovery of stroke survivors. In stroke rehabilitation, early prediction of the obtainable level of functional recovery is desirable to deliver efficient care, set realistic goals, and provide appropriate discharge planning. The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of functional outcome after stroke using inpatient rehabilitation as measured by Functional Independence Measure (FIM) total scores. Correlation and stepwise multiple regression analyses were performed on data collected retrospectively from two-hundred thirty-five patients. More than moderate correlation was found between FIM total scores at the time of hospital admission and FIM total scores at the time of discharge from the hospital. Significant predictors of FIM at the time of discharge were FIM total scores at the time of hospital admission, age, and onset-admission interval. The equation was as follows: expected discharge FIM total score = $76.12+.62{\times}$(admission FIM total score)-$.38{\times}(age)-.15{\times}$(onset-admission interval). These findings suggest that FIM total scores at the time of hospital admission, age, and onset-admission interval are important determinants of functional outcome.
A 'pusher syndrome' encompassing postural imbalance and hemi-neglect is believed to aggravate the prognosis of stroke patients. The patients with pusher syndrome show a particular posture that pushing away from the unaffected side of the body. The objective of this study was to investigate associated proprioception, associated neuro-psychological symptoms and characteristics of functional outcome with and without pusher syndrome. The subjects of this study were 58 acute stroke patients who been rehabilitated at two university hospitals in Seoul and Buchun. Data were collected using proprioception test and line bisection test. The ability of ADL was assessed by the Modified Barthel Index, transfer by the Functional Independence Measure, and balance by the Modified Motor Assessment Scale. The results were that significant difference was found in the presence of proprioception, in the incidence of hemineglect and anosognosia, and in the score of ADL, transfer and balance between patients with and without pusher syndrome. Patients without pusher syndrome gained more motor score than patients with pusher syndrome. From improvement of view, patients with pusher syndrome gained the lowest score in ability of transfer. The finding suggest that the patients with pusher syndrome is a poorer functional outcome, be related to proprioception, hemineglect and anosognosia.
We report a 66-year-old woman with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) 1 treated with combined medical and active physical therapy. She was diagnosed with CRPS 1 following partial shoulder prosthesis due to proximal humerus fracture. Despite continuous medication and physical therapy, there was no improvement in her pain and functional outcome. Her overall pain was decreased by stellate ganglion block 3 times in two weeks conducted during the second month of the follow-up period. Following the ganglion blockades, pain and the other symptoms were decreased intermittently but range of motion (ROM) and functional status were not satisfied as much as expected. After the third month of follow-up, her passive and active ROM of the shoulder joint was increased after application of manipulation under general anesthesia. In conclusion, because CRPS 1 remains one of the most difficult pain syndromes, early diagnosis and treatment are important to have adequate functional results from physical therapy. Manipulation under general anesthesia may be an additional effective treatment tool to obtain functional improvement in some patients diagnosed with CRPS 1.

Background: The case study examined the effect of a hip joint traction and hip posterolateral muscles strengthening on knee pain, range of motion, and lower extremity function scale of patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Although PFPS has previously been attributed to quadriceps dysfunction, more recent research has linked this condition to impairment of the hip musculature and kinematic. Methods: Subject is a 27-years-old female with PFPS. Performed hip joint traction with belt and posterolateral muscles(hip abductors, external rotators) strengthening for 4 weeks, 3 times a week, once a day. Before and after the therapy, measurements were made on the visual analog scale (VAS) and of the ROM, and a lower extremity functional scale (LEFS) was conducted. Results: The results showed positive changes in VAS and range of motion and lower extremity functional scale. First VAS of knee changed from 6 to 2. Second hip joint range of motion showed that internal rotation recored from $53^{\circ}$ to $58^{\circ}$ and external rotation recorded from $32^{\circ}$ to $37^{\circ}$. Third The lower extremity functional scale showed before therapy of 44; after therapy, 63. Conclusion: The hip joint traction and hip posterolateral muscles strengthening was effective in alleviating knee pain, increasing ROM and Lower extremity functional scale of the PFPS patients.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the effect of motor ability on mastery motivation in children with cerebral palsy.
