Although recent studies have shown the usibility of [F-18]FDG small animal Positron Emission Tommography (PET) as a functional neuroimaging technique in behavioural small animal study, researches showing the detection power of functional changes in the brain are still limited. Thus, in the study, we performed [F-18]FDG small animal PET neuroimaging in the well-established fear behavioural experiment. Twelve rats were exposed on cat for 30 minutes after the [F-18]FDG injection. As a result, the brain activity in bilateral amygdala areas significantly increased in the fear condition. In addition, the fear condition evoked the functional activities of hypothalamus, which seemed to be related to the response to stress. These clear localization of fear related brain regions may reflect that a functional neuroimaging technique using [F-18]FDG small animal PET has functional detectibility enough to be applied in small animal behavioral research.

Objective : Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is frequently used to localize language areas in a non-invasive manner. Various paradigms for presurgical localization of language areas have been developed, but a systematic quantitative evaluation of the efficiency of those paradigms has not been performed. In the present study, the authors analyzed different language paradigms to see which paradigm is most efficient in localizing frontal language areas. Methods : Five men and five women with no neurological deficits participated (mean age, 24 years) in this study. All volunteers were right-handed. Each subject performed 4 tasks, including fixation (Fix), sentence reading (SRI. pseudoword reading (PR), and word generation (WG). Fixation and pseudoword reading were used as contrasts. The functional area was defined as the area(s) with a t-value of more than 3.92 in fMRI with different tasks. To apply an anatomical constraint, we used a brain atlas mapping system, which is available in AFNI, to define the anatomical frontal language area. The numbers of voxels in overlapped area between anatomical and functional area were individually counted in the frontal expressive language area. Results : Of the various combinations, the word generation task was most effective in delineating the frontal expressive language area when fixation was used as a contrast (p<0.05). The sensitivity of this test for localizing Broca's area was 81 % and specificity was 70%. Conclusion : Word generation versus fixation could effectively and reliably delineate the frontal language area. A customized effective paradigm should be analyzed in order to evaluate various language functions.
MYB2 protein was identified as a transcription factor that showed encystation-induced expression in Giardia lamblia. Although nuclear import is essential for the functioning of a transcription factor, an evident nuclear localization signal (NLS) of G. lamblia MYB2 (GlMYB2) has not been defined. Based on putative GlMYB2 NLSs predicted by 2 programs, a series of plasmids expressing hemagglutinin (HA)-tagged GlMYB2 from the promoter of G. lamblia glutamate dehydrogenase were constructed and transfected into Giardia trophozoites. Immunofluorescence assays using anti-HA antibodies indicated that GlMYB2 amino acid sequence #507-#530 was required for the nuclear localization of GlMYB2, and this sequence was named as NLSGlMYB2. We further verified this finding by demonstrating the nuclear location of a protein obtained by the fusion of NLSGlMYB2 and G. lamblia glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, a non-nuclear protein. Our data on GlMYB2 will expand our understanding on NLSs functioning in G. lamblia.

The development of an unmanned vehicle basically requires the robust and reliable performance of major functions which include global localization, lane detection, obstacle avoidance, path planning, etc. The implementation of major functional subsystems are possible by integrating and fusing data acquired from various sensory systems such as GPS, vision, ultrasonic sensor, encoder, and electric compass. This paper focuses on implementing the functional subsystems, which are designed and developed by a graphical programming tool, NI LabVIEW, and also verifying the autonomous navigation and remote control of the unmanned vehicle.

Objective: For localization of the motor cortex, seed-based resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) uses the contralateral motor cortex as a seed. However, research has shown that the location of the motor cortex could differ according to anatomical variations. The purpose of this study was to compare the results of rsfMRI using two seeds: a template seed (the anatomically expected location of the contralateral motor cortex) and a functional seed (the actual location of the contralateral motor cortex determined by task-based functional MRI [tbfMRI]). Materials and Methods: Eight patients (4 with glioma, 3 with meningioma, and 1 with arteriovenous malformation) and 9 healthy volunteers participated. For the patients, tbfMRI was performed unilaterally to activate the healthy contralateral motor cortex. The affected ipsilateral motor cortices were mapped with rsfMRI using seed-based and independent component analysis (ICA). In the healthy volunteer group, both motor cortices were mapped with both-hands tbfMRI and rsfMRI. We compared the results between template and functional seeds, and between the seed-based analysis and ICA with visual and quantitative analysis. Results: For the visual analysis, the functional seed showed significantly higher scores compared to the template seed in both the patients (p = 0.002) and healthy volunteers (p < 0.001). Although no significant difference was observed between the functional seed and ICA, the ICA results showed significantly higher scores than the template seed in both the patients (p = 0.01) and healthy volunteers (p = 0.005). In the quantitative analysis, the functional seed exhibited greater similarity to tbfMRI than the template seed and ICA. Conclusion: Using the contralateral motor cortex determined by tbfMRI as a seed could enhance visual delineation of the motor cortex in seed-based rsfMRI.
The objectives of this research are (i) to review the functional and financial distribution of public health adminstration between central and local governments, (ii) to find out, based on economic criteria, optimal distribution required to fullfil local need for public health, and finally, (iii) to suggest policy implications in health area in face of the newly arising local autonomy system in Korea. Judging from data on government expenditures and tax revenues, public health administration in Korea is highly concentrated into central government, both functionlally and financially. High dependency of public health on central government has often been critisized that local residents can not participate in the decision making process for local health problems. This study, however, shows that localization of public health administration does not necessarily result in efficient and equitable allocation of resource to satisfy local demand for public health. From this point of view, two eccnomic criteria are suggested, i.e. external effect and economies of scle, as distributive criteria of roles in public health administration between local and central government. In addition, superiority of central concentration of public health administration to localization is emphasized in that public health in a wide sense contains the nature of public good and is part of compulsory socil security system. As a consequence, planned intervention by government is desirable.
Experiments have demonstrated that a moderate amount of Be added to $Zr_{57.5}Cu_{38.3}Al_{4.2}$ amorphous alloy enhances the plasticity of the alloy. In particular, $Zr_{54}Cu_{36}Al_{4}Be_{6}$ alloy exhibited 19% of strain to fracture along with a strength exceeding 2 GPa. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy conducted on the $Zr_{54}Cu_{36}Al_{4}Be_{6}$ alloy exhibited the presence of compositional modulation, indicating that nm-scale phase separation had occurred at local regions. In this study, the role played by the nm-scale phase separation on the plasticity was investigated in terms of structural disordering, structural softening and shear localization in order to better understand the structural origin of the enhanced plasticity shown by the developed alloy.

To study catalytic activity and hydrogen embrittlement of Pd, Pt, Ni, and Cr in fuel cell electrode, we used density-functional theory. The calculation tools based electron density give much shorter calculation time and cheap costs. Maximum of bond overlap populations of each metal are 0.6539eV for Pd-H, 0.6711eV for Pt-H, 0.6323eV for Ni-H, 0.6152eV for Cr-H. Electron density of Cr has strongest in related metals, which shows strong localization of electron, implying anti hydrogen embrittlement behaviors.
We propose a protein function finding algorithm that is able to predict specific molecular function for unannotated proteins through domain analysis from protein-protein network. To do this, we first construct protein-protein interaction(PPI) network in Saccharomyces cerevisiae from MIPS databases. The PPI network(proteins; 3,637, interactions; 10,391) shows the characteristics of a scale-free network and a hierarchical network that proteins with a number of interactions occur in small and the inherent modularity of protein clusters. Protein-protein interaction databases obtained from a Y2H(Yeast Two Hybrid) screen or a composite data set include random false positives. To filter the database, we reconstruct the PPI networks based on the cellular localization. And then we analyze Hub proteins and the network structure in the reconstructed network and define structural modules from the network. We analyze protein domains from the structural modules and derive functional modules from them. From the derived functional modules with high certainty, we find tentative functions for unannotated proteins.
