Functional Components of Barley Bran with Different Particle Sizes and Cultivars (품종 및 입도별 보리 맥강의 기능성분 함량)

  • This study evaluated the functional components of barley bran with different particle sizes and cultivars (Dahan, Hinchalssalbori, Heukgwang, Huknuri, and Boseokchal). Barley bran divided into fractions I (<60 mesh), II (60~100 mesh), and III (>100 mesh) was collected as pearling by-products produced by an industrial process consisting of consecutive barley pearlers. Total ${\beta}-glucan$ contents of all cultivars were especially highest in fraction II. Total arabinoxylan was the highest in barley bran from Boseokchal in fraction II. Total polyphenol contents were the highest in bran from Boseokchal and Hinchalssal in fraction II, and contents ranged of 5.61~7.00 and 4.24~6.58, respectively. Total flavonoid contents of all cultivars were especially highest in fraction II. 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities ranged from 2.78~7.53 mg L-ascorbic acid (AA) eq/g and 2.24~4.83 mg AA eq/g, respectively. ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities were the highest in barley bran from Dahan in fraction II. In this study, fraction II showed enriched functional components and has the best particle size range for enriched antioxidant activities. These results provide useful data for selection of appropriate cultivars and particle size of bran to achieve high quality barley processing.

Effects of physico-chemical treatment on 'Nunkeunhukchal' (black sticky rice with giant embryo) for the enhancement of GABA (γ- aminobutyric acid) contents ('눈큰흑찰'의 가바(GABA) 함량 증진을 위한 이화학적 처리 효과)

  • We assessed the GABA accumulation and other components after the 'Nunkeunhukchal (BGE)', 'Josanghukchal (BR)', and 'Ilmibyeo (IB)' grain was soaked in water for 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 and 96 hr. The results showed a continuous accumulation of GABA in soaking treated brown rice of BGE and IB. Among the treated hours, 72 hours of soaking had the maximal accumulation of GABA (51.4 mg/100 g), amino acid, polyphenol and other components. The activities of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) in brown rice and rice-bran were the same in BGE rice. However, the formation of GABA treated with L-glutamate as substrate showed dramatic increase of 354.6 (fourteen times higher than normal extraction) and 726.4 mg/100 g in BGE rice and rice-bran, respectively. These results suggested that the soaking and extraction with L-glutamate buffer could be better methods for the harvest of increased GABA.

  • Most applications of polymers involve blends and mixtures of components including solvents, surfactants, copolymers, fillers, organic or inorganic functional additives, and various processing aids. These components provide unique properties of polymeric materials even beyond those tailored into the basic chemical structures. In addition, skillful processing extends the properties for even greater applications. The perennial challenge of polymer science is to understand and exploit the structure-processing-property interplay relationship. We are developing and demonstrating combinatorial methods and high throughput analysis as tools to provide this fundamental understanding.

  • An attempt is made to find the boundary tangential components of potential magnetic fields without constructing solutions in the entire domain. In our procedure, the magnetic energy is expressed as a functional of tangential and normal magnetic fields at the boundary and is minimized by the variational principle. This paper reports a preliminary study on two dimensional potential fields above a plane.

Adsorption of $\textrm{Pb}_{2+}$ in the components of bacterial cell membrane

  • S. epidermidis cell was fractionated into cell wall, cell membrane and cytoplasm. The cell membrane adsorbed the most abundant $\textrm{Pb}_{2+}$ per unit dry weight of the three fractions tested. Adsorption behavior of $\textrm{Pb}_{2+}$ in lipid and protein, which are the main components of the cell membrane, indicated that phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol having phosphoryl group and gangliosides containing carboxyl groups adsorbed much more $\textrm{Pb}_{2+}$ than triglycerides lacking any chargeable functional groups. Protein purified from cell membrane adsorbed larger amount of $\textrm{Pb}_{2+}$ than total native cell membrane or cell membrane lipid.

  • This thesis is a case study of hospital design corresponding to substance of hospital components. The substance of each divisions and functional elements of hospital architecture is analyzed and the appropriate forms corresponding to each substance are tried in design. The researcher is convinced, that healthcare facilities for patients must be differently designed from post-modernism or deconstructivism. He suggests new design method in designing of jeju university hospital competition.

Changes in Chemical Components of Foxtail Millet, Proso Millet, and Sorghum with Germination (발아에 따른 조, 기장, 수수의 화학적 성분 변화)

  • Changes in the chemical components of three cereals, foxtail millet, proso millet, and sorghum, during germination were determined. The crude protein contents of the three cereals did not significantly change during germination, whereas the contents of total dietary fiber of the three cereals increased during germination. The contents of ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA) of Whanggeum-cho (347.4 ${\mu}g/g$), Chongcha-cho (336.5 ${\mu}g/g$), Bulgeun-gijang (347.4 ${\mu}g/g$), Noranchal-gijang (344.9 ${\mu}g/g$), Whanggeumchal-susu (410.4 ${\mu}g/g$), and Whinchal-susu (444.0 ${\mu}g/g$) increased after 24, 24, 84, 36, 48, and 72 hr of germination, respectively, and then sharply decreased. The contents of total polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannin in foxtail millet, proso millet, and Whinchal-susu tended to increase during germination. However, the total phenolic content of Whanggeumchal-susu greatly decreased by 48 hr of germination and then considerably increased, whereas the total flavonoid content of Whanggeumchal-susu greatly decreased during germination. Total tannin content of Whanggeumchal-susu greatly decreased by 36 hr of germination and then slowly increased. DPPH radical scavenging activity of Whanggeumchal-susu greatly decreased by 36 hr of germination and then remained constant, whereas those of other cereals did not greatly change during germination. These results indicate that there are some differences in the chemical components of three cereals during germination.

  • A business model (BM) can be developed based on a business model framework (BMF) consisting of key components such as value proposition, customers, and resources. To systematically generate and analyze emerging BMs such as healthcare BM, an integration of diverse BMF components is needed. The present study is to establish a comprehensive BMF and evaluate its applicability to healthcare BMs. Based on a review of eight BMF studies, ten BMF components were identified and classified into five major components (value proposition, resources, organizing model, customers, and revenue model) and five minor components (technology, service platform, delivery, competitive strategy, and growth/exit) by analyses of frequency and functional importance. Lastly, the BMs of three emerging healthcare companies (WellDoc, Inc., CFW Shops, and Aravind Eye Care System) were analyzed and compared in terms of the proposed BMF components. The comprehensive BMF components presented in the study can be of help for developing new BMs and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of BMs.

Flavoral Essential Oil Components in the Stems of Agastache rugosa for Aromatherapy (아로마테라피용 배초향(Agastache rugosa) 줄기의 방향성 정유 성분)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the flavoral essential oil components in the stems of Agastache rugosa. These components were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass selective detector (GC-MSD). The stems of Agastache rugosa were contained alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, fatty acid esters, and terpenoids. The peak area (%) of estragole was highest among its oil components and the next were pulegone and menthone. The terpenoid alcohols found were 1-octen-3-ol, chavicol, spatulenol, 3-hexen-1-ol, 2-cyclohexen-1-ol, methyl eugenol, and octaethyllene glycol. The stems also contained ketones such as pulegone, menthone, cis-isopulegone, 2-cyclohexene-1-one, 3-octanone, 1-cyclohexanone, isoindole-1-one, t-ionone, inden-2-one, as well as the aldehydes of 4-methoxycinnam and benzaldehyde. The following esters were also detected 1-isopulegone-3-yl acetate, caryophyllene oxide, acetate and benzendicarboxylic acid ester. The terpenoids in the stems were identified as caryophyllene, limonene, cyclohexasiloxane-D, germacrene-D, anethole, cadinene, muurolene, and bourbonene. Overall Agastache rugosa contained several functional oil components including phenylpropanoids and terpenoids as flavoral essential oil components for natural aromatherapy.

  • Correct descriptions for software component functions become a strong requirement in developing critical software especially on the area of real-time applications. In this paper, we introduce both formalization of software design using patterns and verification methods in order for the components to increase their understandability. In particular, the paper investigates into a means of formal description techniques based on VDM++ for the software components, and provides adequacy proof steps for a given functional descriptions.
