  • We study the solvability of a perturbed quadratic functional-integral equation of fractional order with linear modification of the argument. This equation is considered in the Banach space of real functions defined, bounded and continuous on an unbounded interval. Moreover, we will obtain some asymptotic characterization of solutions.

  • Proteomics is a leading technology for the high-throughput analysis of proteins on a genome-wide scale. With the completion of genome sequencing projects and the development of analytical methods for protein characterization, proteomics has become a major field of functional genomics. The initial objective of proteomics was the large-scale identification of all protein species in a cell or tissue. The applications are currently being extended to analyze various functional aspects of proteins such as post-translational modifications, protein-protein interactions, activities and structures. Whereas the proteomics research is quite advanced in animals and yeast as well as Escherichia coli, plant proteomics is only at the initial phase. Major studies of plant proteomics have been reported on subcellular proteomes and protein complexes (e.g. proteins in the plasma membranes, chloroplasts, mitochondria and nuclei). Here several plant proteomics studies will be presented, followed by a recent work using multidimensional protein identification technology (MudPIT).

  • In this paper, we characterize Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{R}^n),\;s{\in}\mathbb{R}$ by the initial value of solutions of heat equation with a growth condition. By using an idea in its proof, we also discuss a stability problem for Cauchy functional equation in the Sobolev spaces.

  • A new aromatic diamine monomer containing benzoxazole substituents was prepared by a multi-step synthesis starting from 1,4-dibromo-2,5-difluorobenzene. This bulky and disc-shaped monomer was polymerized with commercial dianhydride monomers to give several different poly(amic acid)s with their inherent viscosities in the range of 0.24-0.35 dL/g. The prepared polymers were soluble in typical polar aprotic solvents. Thermal imidization to the corresponding polyimides were investigated by using FT-IR, DSC and TGA.

  • Generally, The protone exchange membrane (PEM) contains cationic exchange groups such as SO3$\^$-/ group. The poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) and its copolymers are widely studied because of easily synthetic method and higher conductivities. However, PSSA is not used individually because of poor physical properties such as brittleness and relatively lower Tg. So some researchers are concerned engineering plastics (EP) such as polyimides, polysulfone, polyketones, and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (MPPO) etc. (omitted)

  • Two donor-acceptor-donor monomers such as 3,5-bis(4-bromophenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (BOB) and 3,5-bis(5-bromothiophen-2-yl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (TOT) incorporating electron transporting and hole blocking 1,2,4-oxadiazloe moiety were copolymerized with light emitting fluorene derivative via Suzuki polycondensation to afford two new polymers, PFBOB and PFTOT, respectively. The optical studies for polymers PFBOB and PFTOT revealed that the band gaps are 3.10 eV and 2.72 eV, respectively, and polymer PFBOB exhibited a deep-blue emission while polymer PFTOT showed blue emission in chloroform and as thin film. The photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (${\Phi}_f$) of polymers PFBOB and PFTOT in chloroform calculated against highly blue emitting 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA, ${\Phi}_f=0.90$) were 1.00 and 0.44, respectively.

  • In the development of a nutrient enhanced functional food, kimchi was produced by using high $\gamma$-aminobutyric acid (GABA) producing lactic acid bacterium as a starter strain. The strain isolated from kimchi was identified by using an API kit and named Lactobacillus sp. OPK 2-59. Kimchi was produced by 3 methods 1) monosodium glutamate (MSG) added (M group); 2) starter added (S group); 3) MSG+starter added (M&S group). The produced kimchi was fermented for 24 hr in an incubator at a temperature of $15^{\circ}C$ and stored at $0-1^{\circ}C$ to examine its characteristics. The M&S group exhibited a sharper increase in acidity and a steeper fall in pH as well as a higher number of lactobacilli. The M&S group kimchi had 18 mg/100 g (fresh weight, f.w.) of GABA, whereas the M and S group each had 6 mg/100 g (f.w.) GABA. According to functional evaluation, the M&S group kimchi, which has higher GABA, was not significantly different in taste, color, texture, or smell, but the M&S group was generally superior. In summary, using Lactobacillus sp. OPK 2-59 and MSG, a high quality kimchi with increased GABA content can be produced as a functional food.

  • In this study, we examined the molecular and functional characterization of choline uptake in the human esophageal cancer cells. In addition, we examined the influence of various drugs on the transport of [$^3H$]choline, and explored the possible correlation between the inhibition of choline uptake and apoptotic cell death. We found that both choline transporter-like protein 1 (CTL1) and CTL2 mRNAs and proteins were highly expressed in esophageal cancer cell lines (KYSE series). CTL1 and CTL2 were located in the plasma membrane and mitochondria, respectively. Choline uptake was saturable and mediated by a single transport system, which is both $Na^+$-independent and pH-dependent. Choline uptake and cell viability were inhibited by various cationic drugs. Furthermore, a correlation analysis of the potencies of 47 drugs for the inhibition of choline uptake and cell viability showed a strong correlation. Choline uptake inhibitors and choline deficiency each inhibited cell viability and increased caspase-3/7 activity. We conclude that extracellular choline is mainly transported via a CTL1. The functional inhibition of CTL1 by cationic drugs could promote apoptotic cell death. Furthermore, CTL2 may be involved in choline uptake in mitochondria, which is the rate-limiting step in S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) synthesis and DNA methylation. Identification of this CTL1- and CTL2-mediated choline transport system provides a potential new target for esophageal cancer therapy.

  • Room temperature powder spray in vacuum process, so called Aerosol deposition (AD) is a room temperature (RT) process to fabricate thick and dense ceramic films, based on collision of solid ceramic particles. This technique can provide crack-free dense thin and thick films with thicknesses ranging from sub micrometer to several hundred micrometers with very fast deposition rates at RT. In addition, this technique is using solid particles to form the ceramic films at RT, thus there is few limitation of the substrate and easy to control the compositions of the films. In this article, we review the progress made in synthesis of piezoelectric thin/thick films, multi-layer structures, NTC thermistor thin/thick films, oxide electrode thin films for actuators or sensor applications by AD at Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) during the last 4 years.

  • Functional nanomaterial is expected to have improved capacities on various fields. Especially, metal nanoparticles dispersed in polymer matrix and metal nanofiber, one of the functional nanomaterials, are able to achieve improvement of property in the electric and other related fields. In this study, the fabrication of metal (Ag) nanoparticle dispersed nanofibers were attempted. The Ag nanoparticle dispersed polymer nanofiber and Ag nanofiber were fabricated by electrospinning method using electric force. First, PVP/$AgNO_3$ nanofibers were synthesized by electrospinning in $18{\sim}22kV$ voltage with the starting materials (Ag-nitrate) added polymer (PVP; poly (vinylpyrrolidone)). Then Ag nanoparticle dispersed polymer nanofibers were fabricated to reduce hydrogen reduction at $150^{\circ}C$ for 3hr. And Ag nanofibers were synthesized by the decomposited of PVP at $300{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ for 3hr. The nanofibers were analyzed by XRD, TGA, FE-SEM and TEM. The experimental results showed that the Ag nanofibers could be applied in many fields as an advanced material.
