  • In this paper, the prototyping process for developing syllable-initial consonant-based game 'Korean Guards' is described. Users may effectively learn Korean words using alphabetically sequential approaches, but the easiness of access bestowed on the smart environments and game algorithms could be fully utilized for the functional advantages for educational purposes. This functional game is developed on Android OS and the prototypical outcome is shown.

  • A new quinoline-based acylhydrazone (1) has been synthesized and applied as a fluorescent probe. Probe 1 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to $Cu^{2+}$ with fluorescence "ON-OFF" behavior in HEPES buffered (1‰ DMSO, HEPES 20 mM, pH = 7.4) solution. The on-site generated 1-$Cu^{2+}$ complex displays excellent selectivity to sulfide ions with fluorescence "OFF-ON" performance through copper displacement approach.

  • This study investigates the developmental conditions of functional clothes for the elderly. First, preceding studies and relevant web sites were analyzed along with a survey of commercial functional elderly clothes in Korea. A KIPRIS patent information database was used to study registered and disclosed patents and utility models in order to analyze patent application trends in relevant fields. Patents were searched by year of application from 1990 to 2013. Keywords used for searching included 'senior, aged, and elderly'. Among collected data, overlapping and irrelevant data were excluded to select 162 cases for analysis. Details of analysis are annual patent application trends of functional elderly clothes, topic analysis, shape and characteristics. An examination of commercially available functional clothing products for the elderly indicated that most of products were developed in the form of inner wear or protective clothing for seniors who have bodily discomfort. An annual patent application of functional elderly clothes showed slight fluctuations; however, there was an overall increase. For patent topics, technologies related to secretion and excretion were the most at 47 cases total (29%), followed by 23 cases (14%) on biometric information technology. However, the development of relevant technologies seems necessary in the future as therapeutic function and fiber technologies gradually stagnate.

  • Fluorescent and colorimetric recognition properties of 2-(4-N-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone)-8-hydroxyquinoline (1) in buffered aqueous solution (1% DMSO, HEPES 20 mM, pH = 7.4) have been examined. Sensor 1 displays highly selective and sensitive recognition to $Cu^{2+}$ with fluorescence "ON-OFF" performance. The in situ formed 1-$Cu^{2+}$ complex exhibits an excellent selectivity toward sulfide ions with fluorescence "OFF-ON" behavior via $Cu^{2+}$ displacement approach. Thus, relay recognition of $Cu^{2+}$ and sulfide by a known molecule 1 has been achieved.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of functional insole application using a hallux point on dynamic balance. Methods: Twenty-nine participated in this study. The experiment investigated changes in dynamic balance with the use of a functional insole that emphasized the hallux point. After explaining the experiment to the subjects, the Y-balance test was conducted to measure dynamic balance before the insole was applied. The test was then repeated after the functional insole with the hallux point was. Paired t-tests were used to analyze the statistical differences before and after the application of the functional insole with the hallux point. Results: The functional insole that emphasizes the hallux point significantly increased the distance in the anterior (p<0.05), posteromedial (p<0.05), posterolateral (p<0.05) directions as well as the composite score measured by the Y-balance test compared to before the insole application. Conclusion: The use of a functional insole that emphasizes the hallux point can help the foot pronate during dynamic balance, thereby improving balance through the control of the sole.

  • A quinoline-thiooxorhodamine conjugate fluorescent sensor (1) has been synthesized. Sensor 1 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to $Hg^{2+}$ in $H_2O$/DMSO (95/5, v/v, HEPES 20 mM, pH = 7.4) solution with fluorescence detection. Other tested metal ions do not induce any significant fluorescence intensity changes. Sensor 1 interacts with $Hg^{2+}$ through a 1:1 binding stoichiometry with a good anti-inference ability. In addition, fluorescent imaging of $Hg^{2+}$ in Hela cells is also successfully demonstrated.

  • A carbazole-based Schiff base CB2 was synthesized and applied as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent probe for $Cu^{2+}$ in $H_2O$-DMSO (8/2, v/v, pH = 7.4) solution. CB2 exhibits an excellent selectivity to $Cu^{2+}$ over other examined metal ions with a prominent fluorescence "turn-on" at 475 nm. CB2 and $Cu^{2+}$ forms a 1:2 binding ratio complex with detection limit of $9.5{\mu}M$. In addition, the $Cu^{2+}$ recognition process is hardly interfered by other examined metal ions.

  • A phenylbenzimidazole derivatized sensor (L) that behaves as a ratiometric fluorescent receptor for $Zn^{2+}$ in water has been described. In HEPES buffer at pH 7.4, sensor L displays a weak fluorescence emission band at 367 nm. Upon addition of $Zn^{2+}$, the emission intensity at 367 nm is decreased, concomitantly, a new emission band centered at 426 nm is developed, thus facilitates a ratiometric $Zn^{2+}$ sensing behavior. Sensor L binds $Zn^{2+}$ through a 1:1 binding stoichiometry with high selectivity over other metal cations. Sensor L displays a linear response to $Zn^{2+}$ concentration from 0 to $6.0{\times}10^{-5}M$, sensor L also exhibits high sensitivity to $Zn^{2+}$ with a detection limit of $3.31{\times}10^{-7}M$.

  • A new thiourea based receptor (1) was synthesized and applied to fluoride ion recognition in acetonitrile solution. Receptor 1 displayed dual changes in absorption and fluorescence emission intensities selectively for fluoride ions. The interaction of 1 with fluoride undergoes a deprotonation process that is confirmed by $^1H$ NMR titration.

  • In this paper we review some methods for analyzing functional data and illustrate real application of functional data analysis. Representing methods for functional data by using basis function, analyzing functional variation by functional principal component analysis and functional linear models are reviewed. For a real application, we use temperature and precipitation data measured in Korea from the January of 1970 to the May of 2004. We apply functional principal component analysis for each data and test the significance of regional division done by using shining hours. We also estimate functional regression model for temperature and precipitation.
