Pushover analysis captures the behavior of a structure from fully elastic to collapse. In this analysis, the structure is subjected to increasing lateral load with constant gravity one. Neglecting the effects of the higher modes and the changes in the vibration characteristics during the nonlinear analysis are the main obstacles of the proposed lateral load patterns. To overcome these drawbacks, whereas some methods have been presented to achieve updated lateral load distribution, these methods are not precisely capable to predict the response of structures, precisely. In this study, a new method based on optimization procedure is developed to obtain a lateral load pattern for which the difference between the floor displacements of pushover and Nonlinear Dynamic Analyses (NDA) is minimal. For this purpose, an optimization problem is considered and the genetic algorithm is applied to calculate optimal lateral load pattern. Three special moment resisting steel frames with different dynamic characteristics are simulated and their optimal load patterns are derived. The floor displacements of these frames subjected to the proposed and conventional load patterns are acquired and the accuracy of them is evaluated via comparing with NDA responses. The outcomes reveal that the proposed lateral load distribution is more accurate than the previous ones.

It is very important to predict the nonlinear behavior of combustion instability such as transition phenomena and limit cycle amplitude for fully understanding and controlling the instabilities. These nonlinear instability characteristics are highly dependent upon the flames' nonlinear dynamics in a gas turbine premixed combustor. In this study, nonlinear instability TA(Thermo-acoustic) models were introduced by applying the concept of flame describing function to the thermoacoustic analysis method. As a result of model development, for a given combustor length, the growth rate of instability was greatly affected by the change in amplitude, although the instability frequency was not. Further researches under various operating conditions and model validation on limit cycle amplitude are required.

The fundamental characteristics of nonlinear free-surface waves generated by a shallowly submerged 3-dimensional hydrofoil are investigated. The fluid is assumed inviscid, incompressible and its motion irrotational. The surface tension on the free-surface is neglected. The hydrofoil is represented by a horseshoe vortex system whose shape is assumed fixed. Also the strengths of vortices are assumed given. The exact problem for the wave potential due to the horseshoe vortex system is formulated by the variational principle based on the classical Hamilton's principle. The localized finite element method is used in the numerical computations. In order to increase the numerical efficiency, an intermediate nonlinear-to-linear transition buffer subdomain for a smooth matching is introduced between the fully nonlinear computation subdomain and the truncated linear infinite subdomain. Also used is the modal analysis to reduce the computation tome drastically. The effect of inflow velocity, submergence depth of the hydrofoil and the shape of circulation distribution on the wave profiles are thoroughly examined. Especially it was possible to investigate the nonlinear influence of the free vortex on the free vortex. The nonlinear free-surface effect on the induced forces on the hydrofoil is also investigated.

A finite element method based on the penalized subdomain-interface framework is proposed for fully-coupled, nonlinear thermomechanical analyses with thermal contact anuor radiation boundaries. In the variational formulation, a well-known penalty functional scheme is adopted for connecting subdomains and interfaces that satisfy various continuity requirements. As a logical consequence, the whole domain can be arbitrarily divided into independently-modeled subdomains without considering the conformity of meshes along their interfaces. Since the nonlinearities due to the contact and radiation boundaries can be localized within a few subdomains, the computational efficiency of the present method is greatly increased with appropriate solution algorithms. By solving some numerical problems, these advantageous features are confirmed carefully.

The large planar failure has occurred in a rock cut slope of highway construction site in Boeun. This area is considered as unstable since the discontinuities whose orientations are similar to the orientation of the failure plane, are observed in many areas. Therefore, several analysis techniques such as SMR, stereographic analysis, limit equilibrium, numerical analysis, which are commonly used in rock slope stability analysis, are adopted in this area. In order to analyze the stress redistribution and nonlinear displacement caused by cut, which are not obtained in limit equilibrium method, the UDEC and shear strength reduction technique were used in this study Then the factors of safety evaluated by shear strength reduction technique and limit equilibrium were compared. In addition, the factor of safety under fully saturated slope condition was calculated and subsequently, the effect of the reinforcement was evaluated.
In this study, the numerical solution of a space-fractional Burgers' equation with initial and boundary conditions is considered. This equation is the simplest nonlinear model for diffusive waves in fluid dynamics. It occurs in a variety of physical phenomena, including viscous sound waves, waves in fluid-filled viscous elastic pipes, magneto-hydrodynamic waves in a medium with finite electrical conductivity, and one-dimensional turbulence. The proposed QBS/CNG technique consists of the Galerkin method with a function basis of quadratic B-splines for the spatial discretization of the space-fractional Burgers' equation. This is then followed by the Crank-Nicolson approach for time-stepping. A linearized scheme is fully constructed to reduce computational costs. Stability analysis, error estimates, and convergence rates are studied. Finally, some test problems are used to confirm the theoretical results and the proposed method's effectiveness, with the results displayed in tables, 2D, and 3D graphs.
Wave run-up is an important phenomenon that should be considered in ocean structure design. In this study, the wave run-up of a surface-piercing circular cylinder was calculated in the time domain using the three-dimensional linear and fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) techniques. The NWT was based on the boundary element method and the mixed Eulerian and Lagrangian method. Stokes second-order waves were applied to evaluate the effect of the nonlinear waves on wave run-up, and an artificial damping zone was adopted to reduce the amount of reflected and re-reflected waves from the sidewall of the NWT. Parametric studies were conducted to determine the effect of wavelength, wave steepness, and the draft of the cylinder on the wave run-up of the cylinder. The maximum wave run-up value occurred at 0°, which was in front of the cylinder, and the minimum value occurred near the circumferential angle of 135°. As the diffraction parameter increased, the wave run-up increased up to 1.7 times the wave height. Furthermore, the wave run-up was 4% higher than the linear wave when the wave steepness was 1/35. In particular, the crest height of the wave run-up increased by 8%.
In this paper, the wave pattern around the hull with the transom stern advancing on the free surface with a constant speed was taken into consideration. To solve the problem the numerical analysis program was developed using Rankine source panel method based on potential flow analysis technique. The non-linearity of the free surface boundary conditions was fully satisfied. To verify the validity of the developed program the numerical calculations for Athena hull and KCS(KRISO container ship) hull was performed. The results of the numerical computation was compared with the ones of the model test experiment.

We describe a simple method for obtaining a narrow dip with subnatural linewidth in Doppler-free laser spectroscopy. The method is based on detecting the absolute magnitude, |Re[$\chi$NL($\omega$-$\omega$o)]|, of the dispersive component (real part) of the nonlinear susceptibility induced by the pump beam, and the line shape recorded therefore exhibits a fully resolved technique and a dual phase lock-in amplifier, we have demonstrated the dip as narrow as 3 MHz in the laser-induced birefringence spectrum of the Na D1 line (natural linewidth 10 MHz). Possible spectroscopic applications are considered.

Numerical computations are made to predict wave loads on a vertical cylinder in an extreme wave. To generate the extreme wave, a frequency-focused unidirectional wave is adopted in three-dimensional numerical wave tank. The mathematical formulation is wide in the scope of the potential theory with fully nonlinear free surface conditions. As a numerical method, finite element method based on variational principle is applied. Comparisons between the present numerical results and the previous computation data. show a good agreement.
