Wind-induced response and loads for the Confederation Bridge -Part II: derivation of wind loads

  • This paper uses ten years of on-site monitoring data for the Confederation Bridge to derive wind loads and investigate whether the bridge has experienced its design wind force effects since its completion in 1997. The load effects derived using loads from the on-site monitoring data are compared to the load effects derived using loads from the 1994 and 2009 wind tunnel aerodynamic model tests. The research shows, for the first time, that the aerodynamic model-based methodology originally developed in 1994 is a very accurate method for deriving wind loads for structural design. The research also confirms that the bridge has not experienced its specified (i.e., unfactored) wind force effects since it was opened to traffic in 1997, even during the most severe event that has occurred during this period.

  • This paper analyzes a resonant inverter to generate plasma. The resonant inverter consists of a full bridge converter, resonant network and reactor to generate a magnetic field for plasma generation. A plasma load has very distinct characteristics compared to conventional loads. The characteristics of plasma load are analyzed through experimental results. This paper presents the study on the resonant network, which was performed in order to determine how to achieve a constant current gain. Another important contribution of this study is the analysis of drop-out phenomenon observed in plasma loads which is responsible for unpredictable shutdown of the plasma generator that requires stable operation. In addition, the design process for the resonant network of a plasma generator is proposed. The validity of this study is verified through simulations and experimental results.

  • This paper deals with a novel full digital control method of the three-phase PWM inverter for UPS. The voltage and current of output filter capacitor as state variables are the feedback control input. In addition, a double deadbeat control consisting of a d-q current minor loop and a d-q voltage major loop, both with precise decoupling, have been developed. The switching pulse width modulation based on SVM is adopted so that the capacitor current should be exactly equal to its reference current. In order to compensate the calculation time delay, the predictive control is achieved by the current·voltage observer. The load prediction is used to compensate the load disturbance by disturbance observer with deadbeat response. The experimental results show that the proposed system offers an output voltage with THD less than 2% at a full nonlinear load.

  • A Simple AC complex circuit analysis for LCL type series resonant converter with phase shift control is proposed. Based on these analyses, a set of characteristic curves which allows a optimal design procedure for this converter is shown, without increasing the volt-ampere rating of tank circuit Especially, inverter output peak current can be minimized in both full load and partial load conditions. The presented design considerations can make the load range wide from full loads to light loads achieving turn-on with zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation. The detailed analysis and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed design algorithms. (author). refs., figs., tab.

복합긴장방식이 적용된 세그멘탈 U형 거더 정적 거동 연구 (A Study of Statistic Behavior of Segmental U-shaped Prestressed Concrete Girder Applied with Integrated Tensioning Systems)

  • 연구목적: 본 연구는 긴장방식을 복합적으로 적용한 세그멘탈 PSC U형 거더에 대한 해석적 거동을 기반으로 실대형 실험체의 휨 거동 결과를 평가하여 거동의 안전성을 검증하고자 한다. 연구방법: 도로교설계기준 한계상태설계법의 사용한계 및 극한한계상태 설계 결과를 바탕으로 40m 실대형 실험체의 가력하중을 산정하고 이에 대한 4점재하방식 정적 하중재하 실험을 수행하였다. 연구결과: 설계하중, 균열하중 및 극한하중이 작용할 때 해석적 처짐값 대비 97.1%, 98.5% 그리고 79.0%에 해당하는 실험체 처짐이 발생하였다. 설계하중, 균열하중 및 극한하중이 작용할 때 균열계는 각 연결부에서 0.009~0.035mm, 0.014~0.050mm, 6.383~5.522mm로 계측되었다. 결론: 균열하중 재하시까지 실험체는 탄성적으로 거동하였고 균열발생 후 극한하중까지 변형율-경화현상을 보이며 작용하중에 대하여 휨 저항 거동이 뚜렷이 나타났음을 확인하였다. 실대형 실험체 연결부(Dry Joint) 균열은 시설물 상태평가 B등급 기준 25% 미만의 결과로써 연결부의 탄성적 거동을 확인하였고 극한하중 제거 후 최종적 잔류 변형은 0.114mm로써 세그먼트 연결부의 안정적 거동을 확인하였다.

구치용 도재소부금관과 전부도재관에 파절을 일으키는 한국음식에 관한 연구 (A comparative study on the correlation between Korean foods and the fractures of PFG and all ceramic crowns for posterior applications)

  • 연구목적: 4종 구치용도재관(Full-porcelain-occlusal-surfaced PFG, Half-porcelain-occlusal-surfaced PFG, Empress 2, Ice Zirkon)과 선별된 한국음식의 fracture load와 dynamic cyclic load를 측정하여 구치용 도재관에 파절을 일으킬 가능성이 있는 한국음식을 선별하는데 있다. 연구재료 및 방법: 4종의 각 porcelain 보철물 system 당 15개의 축대칭을 이루는 crown을 제작했다. 이때 occlusal reduction은 1.5-2.0 mm로 했다(중심부 1.5 mm, 교두부 2.0 mm). 각 15개의 시편의 교합면 중앙부에 직경 5 mm의 stainless steel ball을 위치시킨 후 Instron 4465 universal testing machine(Instron, Norwood, MA USA)을 이용하여 5 mm/min의 crosshead speed로 수직 부하를 주어 파절을 일으키는 최대 부하(N)를 기록했다. 이후, 한국음식 중 삶은 게, 닭(뼈포함), 소갈비(뼈포함), 마른 오징어, 건멸치, 사탕, 호두껍질을 표본으로 설정하고 이들을 파절시키는 최대 부하(N)를 universal testing machine(Instron 4465) 에서 측정하여 기록했다. 각 항목당 15번을 측정했다. 음식물을 파절시킬 때 필요한 최대부하와 각 보철물의 파절저항을 비교하여 한국의 식습관과 도재를 이용한 보철물 파절의 상관관계를 조사하였다. fracture loads는 analysis of variance 와 Post Hoc tests를 이용해서 분석하였다($\alpha$=0.05). 차후에 위에서 얻은 결과를 바탕으로 Hydraulic Dynamic Fatigue Testing Machine(858 Bionix II, MTS systems, Eden Prairie, MN USA)를 이용하여 4종의 각 porcelain 보철물 system당 5개의 crown에 14Hz Cyclic Load를 가하여 crown에 파절을 일으키는 masticatory cycle수를 알아 보았다. Load 수치는 41.0 N(건멸치 파절강도), 169.0 N(마른오징어 파절강도), 382.9 N(닭뼈 파절강도), 2224.8 N(사탕 파절강도)로 설정하였다. 결과: 95% confidence intervals for mean fracture load는 2599.3-2809.1 N(완전도재교합면 PFG), 3689.4-3819.9 N(반도재교합면 PFG), 1501.2-1867.9 N(Ice Zirkon), 803.2-1188.5 N(Empress 2)로 나왔고 95% confidence intervals for dynamic cyclic load on fracture는 instron 상에서 도재보철물에 파절을 일으키지 않은 load인 2224.8 N(사탕 파절강도)와 382.9 N(닭뼈 파절강도)로 실험했을 때, 2224.8 N에서 4796.8-9321.2 cycles(완전도재교합면 PFG), 2224.8 N에서 881705.1-1143565.7 cycles(반도재교합면 PFG), 382.9 N에서 979993.0-1145773.4 cycles(Ice Zirkon), 382.9 N에서 564.1-954.7 cycles(Empress 2)로 나왔다. 결론: 통계학적으로 유의할 만한 차이가 그룹들 간 fracture load에서 나타났다. 한국음식물 중 소갈비(뼈포함)와 사탕(자두맛캔디)은 구치용 도재보철물을 파절시킬 가능성이 있는 음식물로 밝혀졌다. 단일수직부하에서는 파절이 생기지 않는 경우라 할지라도 dynamic cyclic load를 줄 경우 일정 주기 후에 파절이 생기는 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.

PRaFULL: A method for the analysis of piled raft foundation under lateral load

  • A new code, called PRaFULL (Piled Raft Foundation Under Lateral Load), was developed for the analysis of laterally loaded Combined Pile Raft Foundation (CPRF). The proposed code considers the contribution offered by the raft-soil contact and the interactions between all the CPRF system components. The nonlinear behaviour of the reinforced concrete pile and the soil are accounted. As shallower soil layers are of great relevance in the lateral response of a pile foundation, PRaFULL includes the possibility to consider layered soil profiles with appropriate properties. The shadowing effect on the ultimate soil pressure is accounted, when dealing with pile groups, as proposed by the Strain Wedge Model. PRaFULL BEM code obviously requires less computational resources compared to FEM (Finite Element Method) or FDM (Finite Difference Method) codes. The proposed code was validated in the linear elastic range by comparisons with the code APRAF (Analysis of Piled Raft Foundations). The reliability of the procedure to predict piled raft performance was then verified in nonlinear range by comparisons with both centrifuge tests and computer code PRAB.

마찰형 감쇠장치가 설치된 실물크기 3층 철골프레임의 진동대 실험 (Shaking Table Test of a Full Scale 3 Story Steel Frame with Friction Dampers)

  • Energy dissipation devices can be considered as an alternative for the seismic performance enhancement of existing structures based on the strengthened seismic design code. In this study, seismic response mitigation effects of friction dampers are investigated through the shaking table test of a full scale 3 story building structure. Frist, the bilinear force-displacement relationship of a structure-brace-friction damper system and the effect of brace-friction damper on the increase of frequency and damping ratio are identified. Second, frequency, displacement, and torque dependent characteristics of the friction damper are investigated by using harmonic load excitation tests. Finally, the shaking table tests are performed for a full scale 3 story steel frame. System identification results using random signal excitation indicated that brace-friction damper increased structural damping ratio and frequency, and El Centro earthquake test showed that brace-friction damper reduced the peak displacement and acceleration significantly. In particular, it was observed that the damping effect due to friction damper becomed obvious when the structure was excited by more intensive load causing frequent slippage of the friction dampers.

  • This study is intended to provide navigator with specific information necessary to assist the avoidance of collision and the operation of ships to evaluate the maneuverability of dead weight tonnage 8,000 tons Oil/Chemical tanker. The actual maneuvering characteristics of ship can be adequately judged from the results of typical ship trials. Author carried out sea trials based full scale for turning test in ballast condition and full load condition, semi balanced rudder and flap rudder. The turning circle maneuvering were performed on the starboard and port sides with $35^{\circ}$ rudder angle at the normal continuous rating. The results from tests could be compared directly with the standards of maneuverability of IMO and consequently the maneuvering qualities of the ship is full satisfied with its.

  • this paper focuses on the dynamic characteristics of full-scale viscoelastic dampers through the experimental study. Viscoelastic dampers which dissipate the response energy of a building under earthquake excitation make a role of increasing damping capacity of the building. Therefore it is important to recognize the damping behavior of viscoelastic dampers. Full-scale viscoelastic dampers are made of three types of rubbers for experimental test. The hysteretic behavior is obtained through the load-deformation experiment over the various loading frequencies and damper strains The experimental results show the good performance of viscoelastic dampers under earthquake excitations,
