  • In a full-duplex (FD) wireless cellular network, uplink (UL) users induce the severe inter-user interference to downlink (DL) users. Therefore, a user scheduling that makes a pair of DL user and UL user to use the same radio resource simultaneously influences the system performances significantly. In this paper, we first formulate an optimization problem for user scheduling to minimize the occurrence of outage, aiming to guarantee the quality of service of users, and then we propose a suboptimal user scheduling algorithm with low complexity. The proposed scheduling algorithm is designed in a way where the DL user with a worse signal quality has a higher priority to choose its UL user that causes less interference. Simulation results show that the FD system using the proposed user scheduling algorithm achieves the optimal performance and significantly decreases the outage probability compared with the conventional half-duplex cellular system.

  • In this paper, we propose a virtual full-duplex relaying scheme based on data ferrying using two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). By utilizing high mobility of two UAVs, the proposed relaying scheme can make each UAV communicate with a source node or a destination node when the UAV is near the source node or the destination node. The proposed relaying scheme can overcome the performance limitations of the half-duplex relaying and the implementation constraints of the full-duplex relaying. In addition, we propose an algorithm to shift the center point of two UAVs' trajectory with consideration of inter-relay interference (IRI). We show the simulation results of our proposed trajectory's center point shift algorithm. From the simulation results, it is shown that our proposed relaying scheme can achieve higher end-to-end spectral efficiency (SE) than the conventional static relaying scheme.

  • As implementation of the in-band full duplex (IFD) transceiver becomes feasible, research interest is growing with respect to using IFD communication with cellular networks. However, the cellular network in which the IFD communication is applied inevitably suffers from an increase of the co-channel interference (CCI) due to IFD simultaneous transmission and reception. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a cellular network based on uni-directional IFD (UD-IFD) communication, wherein an IFD base station simultaneously supports downlink and uplink transmissions of half-duplex (HD) users. In addition, a multi-pair CCI cancellation (MP-CCIC) method combining CCIC and user pairing is proposed to improve the performance of the UD-IFD network. Simulation results showed that, compared to a conventional HD cellular network without using CCIC, capacity gain was not obtained in the UD-IFD cellular network. On the other hand, when applying the proposed MP-CCIC, the capacity of the UD-IFD cellular network greatly improved compared to that of an HD cellular network.

  • In almost all schemes of cooperative cognitive radio networks (CCRN), the users transmit and receive signals in half-duplex mode. In this paper, a design of CCRN adopting the full-duplex (FD) technique is addressed. In order to enable FD communication among users in the CCRN, simultaneous transmitting and receiving antennas are employed for the secondary users. Preliminary results from analysis and numerical evaluation indicate that the proposed FD multiple-input-multiple-output CCRN framework can provide a performance gain over the conventional CCRN frameworks.

  • In this paper, a wireless powered communication network (WPCN) consisting of a hybrid access point (H-AP) and multiple user equipment (UE), all of which operate in full-duplex (FD), is described. We first propose a transceiver structure that enables FD operation of each UE to simultaneously receive energy in the downlink (DL) and transmit information in the uplink (UL). We then provide an energy usage model in the proposed UE transceiver that accounts for the energy leakage from the transmit chain to the receive chain. It is shown that the throughput of an FD WPCN using the proposed FD UE (FD-WPCN-FD) can be maximized by optimal allocation of the UL transmission time to the UE by solving a convex optimization problem. Simulation results reveal that the use of the proposed FD UE efficiently improves the throughput of a WPCN with a practical self-interference cancellation capability at the H-AP. Compared to the WPCN with FD H-AP and half-duplex (HD) UE, FD-WPCN-FD achieved an 18% throughput gain. In addition, the throughput of FD-WPCN-FD was shown to be 25% greater than that of WPCN in which an H-AP and UE operated in HD.

  • In this paper, performance analysis of full-duplex (FD) relay selection under decode-and-forward (DF) relaying mode is carried out by taking into account several critical factors, including the distributions of the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the outage probability of wireless links. The tradeoff between the FD and half-duplex (HD) modes for relay selection techniques is also analyzed, where the former suffers from the impact of residual self-interference, but the latter requires more channel resources than the former (i.e., two orthogonal channels are required). Furthermore, the impact of optimal power allocation (OPA) on the proposed relay-selection scheme is analyzed. Particularly, the exact closed-form expressions for outage probability of the proposed scheme over Rayleigh fading channels are derived, followed by validating the proposed analysis using simulation. Numerical results show that the proposed FD based scheme outperforms the HD based scheme by more than 4 dB in terms of coding gain, provided that the residual self-interference level in the FD mode can be substantially suppressed to the level that is below the noise power.

  • This paper introduces a full duplex single secondary user multiple-input multiple-output (FD-SSU-MIMO) cognitive radio network, where secondary user (SU) opportunistically accesses the authorized spectrum unoccupied by primary user (PU) and transmits data based on FD-MIMO mode. Then we study the network achievable average sum-rate maximization problem under sum transmit power budget constraint at SU communication nodes. In order to solve the trade-off problem between SU's sensing time and data transmission time based on opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) and the power allocation problem based on FD-MIMO transmit mode, we propose a simple trisection algorithm to obtain the optimal sensing time and apply an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to tackle the FD-MIMO based network achievable sum-rate maximization problem. Simulation results show that our proposed sensing time optimization and AO-based optimal power allocation strategies obtain a higher achievable average sum-rate than sequential convex approximations for matrix-variable programming (SCAMP)-based power allocation for the FD transmission mode, as well as equal power allocation for the half duplex (HD) transmission mode.

  • This paper investigates the power allocation and outage performance of MIMO full-duplex relaying (MFDR), based on orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC), in cognitive radio systems. OSTBC transmission is used as a simple means to achieve multi-antenna diversity gain. Cognitive MFDR systems not only have the advantage of increasing spectral efficiency through spectrum sharing, but they can also extend coverage through the use of relays. In cognitive MFDR systems, the primary user experiences interference from the secondary source and relay simultaneously, owing to full duplexing. It is therefore necessary to optimize the transmission powers at the secondary source and relay. In this paper, we propose an optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme based on minimizing the outage probability in cognitive MFDR systems. We also analyse the outage probability of the secondary user in noise-limited and interference-limited environments in Nakagami-m fading channels. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes achieve performance improvements in terms of reducing outage probability.

  • This paper investigates the error performance of the amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems in the context of full-duplex (FD) communication. In addition to the inherent self-interference (SI) due to simultaneous transmission and reception, coexistent FD terminals may cause crosstalk. In this paper, we utilize the information exchange via the crosstalk channel to construct a particular distributed space-time code (DSTC). The residual SI is also considered. Closed-form pairwise error probability (PEP) is first derived. Then we obtain the upper bound of PEP in high transmit power region to provide more insights of diversity and coding gain. The proposed DSTC scheme can attain full cooperative diversity if the variance of SI is not a function of the transmit power. The coding gain can be improved by lengthening the frame and proper power control. Feasibility and efficiency of the proposed DSTC are verified in numerical simulations.

  • The FSK duplex remote controlling wireless transmission units with a common local oscillator circuit for transmitter and receiver are designed and implemented in this paper. In the FSK full-duplex the channel frequency for Tx/Rx is allocated, a common switching oscillator circuit for Tx/Rx is designed in the FSK half-duplex scheme. Both of FSK units get functions of automatic channel detection for busy channels and channel configuration for an idle channel in order to reduce the RF channel interference and are designed as a remote controller with small-sized low power of 10mW and the 400MHz-colpitz type PLL configuration of 50kHz channel separation. The full-duplex Tx/Rx link frequency gets frequency difference of 42.8MHz, which is double of 21.4MHz IF frequency.
