A Fuel-rich preburner using kerosene fuel is operated in a non-equilibrium condition and a prediction of burnt-gas properties is not easy from a chemical equilibrium analysis. A premixed counter-flow flame analysis was conducted for the prediction of burnt-gas properties. JP10 was selected for a representative kerosene fuel and a non-equilibrium combustion analysis was accomplished in supercritical condition using UC San Diego reaction mechanism. The premixed counter-flow flame was assumed for stationary and stable flame, and the temperature result in present study was overestimated rather than the experimental results from Huzel. From the difference of the temperature result, other properties, heat capacity, specific heat ratio and molecular weight had some differences against the experimental results. Moreover, the present results was more similar to the experimental results than those of the equilibrium analysis.
The combustion instability was experimentally investigated in model gas turbine combustor with dual swirl burner. When such instability occurs, a strong coupling between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release excites a self-sustained acoustic wave which results in a loud sound, and can even cause fatal damage to the combustor and entire system. In present study, to understand the combustion instability with a premixed mixture, the detailed periods of pressure and heat release data in unstable flame mode were investigated by various measurement methods at relatively rich condition and lean condition near flammable limits. Also, to prepare the utilization of synthetic natural gas (SNG) fuel in gas turbine system, an investigation was conducted using a simulated SNG including methane as a reference fuel to examine the effects of $H_2$ content on flame stability. These results provide that the instability due to flash-back behaviour like CIVB phenomenon occurred at rich condition, while the repetition of relighting and extinction caused the oscillation of lean condition near flammable limit. From the analysis of $H_2$ content effects, it is also confirmed that the instability frequency is proportional to the laminar burning velocity at both rich and lean condition.
This study reports the results of an experimental investigation of emission and temperatures from the syngas-air premixed flame with a various mixture composition in the region of large equivalence ratios. The effects of hydrogen contents and equivalence ratios on the flame velocity, which reported before, and emission of syngas fuel are examined. In this study, representative syngas mixture compositions ($H_2:CO$) such as $H_2:CO=10:90$, 25:75, 50:50 and 75:25 and equivalence ratios from 0.5 to 5.0 have been conducted. The emissions of syngas fuel were measured by the high precision analyzer with enclosure configuration and the adiabatic temperatures are calculated by used Chemkin basis. The NOx emission level is coincided relatively well with the adiabatic temperature distributions in lean mixture conditions, but for rich mixture conditions NOx level was also increased again even though the adiabatic temperature decreases. Such an increasing characteristics in rich mixture conditions is coincided well with the tendency that rather the flue gas temperature increases.
Experimental and numerical studies were conducted to investigate flame behaviors near flammable limits for downstream-interacting SNG-air premixed flames in a counter-flow configuration. The SNG fuel consisted of a methane, a propane, and a hydrogen with volumetric ratios of 91, 6, and 3%, respectively. The most appropriate priority for some reliable reaction mechanisms examined was given to the mechanism of UC San diego via comparison of lean extinction limits attained numerically with experimental ones. Flame stability map was presented with a functional dependencies of lower and upper methane concentrations in terms of global strain rate. The results show that, at the global strain rate of $30s^{-1}$, lean extinction boundary is slanted while rich extinction one is relatively less inclined because of the dependency of such extinction boundary shapes on deficient reactant Lewis number governed by methane mainly. Further increase of global strain rate forces both extinction boundaries to be more slanted and to be shrunk, resulting in an island of extinction boundary and subsequently one flame extinction limit. Extinction mechanisms for lean and rich, symmetric and asymmetric extinction boundary were identified and discussed via heat losses and chemical interaction.

Synthesis gas such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide was produced from $CH_4/oxygen$ mixture using insulated pressurized porous media combustor. Experimentally, two cylindrical SiC foams with the different pore density were piled up in a quartz tube and fully premixed mixture was supplied in the axial direction. After stabilizing fuel-rich flame at the interface of the two foams at several pressure conditions, mole fractions of synthesis gases were measured by gas chromatography. Heat recirculation through the inner foam structure could extend the flow velocity of stable region over the laminar burning velocity. As the pressure increased, the rich flammability limit, $H_2/CO$ ratio, and module M increased.
Fuel processing systems which convert fuel into rich gas (such as stream reforming, partial oxidation, autothermal reforming) need high temperature environment ($600{\sim}1,000^{\circ}$). Generally, anode-off gas or mixture of anode-off gas and LNG is used as input gas of fuel reformer. In order to make efficient and low emission burner system for fuel reformer, it is necessary to elucidate the combustion and emission characteristic of fuel reformer burner. The purpose of this study is to develop a porous premixed flat ceramic burner that can be used for 1~5 kW fuel cell reformer. Ceramic burner experiments using natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas, mixture of natural gas & anode off gas were carried out respectively to investigate the flame characteristics by heating capacity and equivalence ratio. Results show that the stable flat flames can be established for natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas and mixture of natural gas & anode off gas as reformer fuel in the porous ceramic burner. For all of fuels, their burning velocities become smaller as the equivalence ratio goes to the lean mixture ratio, and a lift-off occurs at lean limit. Flame length in hydrogen and anode off gas became longer with increasing the heat capacity. In particular, the blue surface flame is found to be very stable at a very lean equivalence ratio at heat capacity and different fuels. The exhausted NOx and CO measurement shows that the blue surface flame represents the lowest NOx and CO emissions since it remains very stable at a lean equivalence ratio.
Propagation characteristics of tribrachial flames have been investigated experimentally in both two-dimensional and axisymmetric counterflows. Mixture fraction gradient at stoichiometric location is controlled by varying equivalence ratios at the two nozzles, one of which maintains rich while the other lean premixture. Tribrachial flames propagating through these mixtures are investigated. The propagation speed of tribrachial flames in two-dimensional counterflow decreases with fuel concentration gradient and has much higher speed than the maximum speed predicted previously in two-dimensional mixing layers. From an analogy with premixed flame propagation, this excessively large propagation speed can be attributed to the tribrachial flame propagating with respect to burnt gas. Corresponding maximum speed in the limit of small mixture fraction gradient is estimated and extrapolated experimental results substantiate this limiting speed. As mixture fraction gradient approaches zero, a transition in propagation characteristics occurs, such that the propagation speed of tribrachial flame approaches stoichiometric laminar burning velocity with respect to burnt gas. Similar behavior has been obtained for tribrachial flames propagating in axisymmetric counterflow.

The characteristics of flame shape, laminar burning velocity, emissions and heat flux of stagnation point in premixed impinging jet flame of syngas fuel with 10% hydrogen content were experimentally investigated. Also, the adiabatic temperature and burning velocity are calculated by Chemkin package with USC-II mechanism. The equivalence ratios(0.8~5.0) and dimensionless separation distance(2.0~5.0) with fixed Reynolds number(1800) are main parameters in this work. Different flame shapes and colors were observed for different impingement conditions. The experimental results of burning velocity by flame surface area have a consistent with previous works and numerical simulation of this work. The inner flame length could be predicted with the ratio of mixture velocity and burning velocity from a simple formulation by the laminar burning velocity definition. It has been observed that the heat fluxes at stagnation point are directly affected by the flame shape including the separation distance. The emission results in impinging flame of syngas fuel show that the characteristics of $NO_x$ emission traced well with adiabatic temperature trend and CO emission due to fuel rich condition increased continuously with respect to the equivalence ratio.
The effect of fuel concentration gradient on the propagation characteristics of tribrachial (or triple) flames has been investigated experimentally in both two-dimensional and axisymmetric counterflows. The gradient at the stoichiometric location was controlled by the equivalence ratios at the two nozzles; one of which is maintained rich, while the other lean. Results show that the displacement speed of tribrachial flames in the two-dimensional counterflow decreases with fuel concentration gradient and has much larger speed than the maximum speed predicted previously in two-dimensional mixing layers. From an analogy with premixed flame propagation, this excessively large displacement speed can be attributed to the flame propagation with respect to burnt gas. Corresponding maximum speed in the limit of small mixture fraction gradient was estimated and the curvefit of the experimental data substantiates this limiting speed. As mixture fraction gradient approaches zero, a transition occurs, such that the propagation speed of tribrachial flame approaches stoichiometric laminar burning velocity with respect to burnt gas. Similar results have been obtained for tribrachial flames propagating in axisymmetric counterflow.

An experimental study was performed for the analysis of frequency-equivalence ratio correlation in the methane-air premixed flame influenced by ultrasonic standing wave. Evolutionary features of the propagating flame were caught by high-speed camera, and the variation of flame-behavior including local velocities was investigated in detail using a post-processing analysis of the high-speed images. It was found that propagation-velocity augmentation of the methane-air premixed flame by the intervention of ultrasonic standing wave was made in leaner mixture, but the velocity diminished when the strength of chemical reaction was saturated around the slightly fuel-rich side of stoichiometry.
