  • This paper proposes the fuel cell power plants as alternative energy sources for distributed generation in Jeju Island, Korea. This will help to increase the fuel efficiency, at least double the current thermal power plants, decrease environmental pollution, virtually to none, increase the reliability of power supply, reducing the dependency of the HVDC link, and provide quality power to the growing infrastructure in meeting the requirements for the free-trade international island.

  • The world is facing a challenge in meeting its needs for energy. Global energy consumption in the last halfcentury has increased very rapidly and is expected to continue to grow over the next 50 years. However, it is expected to see significant differences between the last 50 years and the next. This paper aims at introducing a good solution to replace or work with conventional marine power plants. This includes the use of fuel cell power plant operated with hydrogen produced through water electrolysis or hydrogen produced from natural gas, gasoline, or diesel fuels through steam reforming processes to mitigate air pollution from ships.

  • In this paper, the two-stage DC-DC converter is proposed to make the control simple and to boost the low input voltage in the fuel cell generating system. The low efficiency of the conventional power converter is caused by a characteristic of the low-voltage and high-current in the fuel cell generating system. High-frequency transformer is needed to block the noise and to guarantee the safety of cell and load as a magnetically insulation. The proposed two-stage DC-DC converter for a fuel cell generation is more efficient than the traditional one-stage converter and easy to control. The design of a high-frequency transformer is also simple. Finally, the utility of the proposed converter is proved by the simulations and experiments.

  • A microbial fuel cell (MFC) and bioelectrochemical systems are novel bioprocesses which employ exoelectrogenic biofilm on electrode as a biocatalyst for electricity generation and various useful chemical production. Previous reports show that electrogenic biofilms of MFCs are time varying systems and dynamically interactive with the electrically conductive media (carbon paper as terminal electron acceptor). It has been reported that maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method can automatically control load by algorithm so that increase power generation and columbic efficiency. In this study, we developed logic based control strategy for external load resistance by using $LabVIEW^{TM}$ which increases the power production with using flat-plate MFCs and MPPT circuit board. The flat-plate MFCs inoculated with anaerobic digester sludge were stabilized with fixed external resistance from $1000{\Omega}$ to $100{\Omega}$. Automatic load control with MPPT started load from $52{\Omega}$ during 120 hours of operation. MPPT control strategy increased approximately 2.7 times of power production and power density (1.95 mW and $13.02mW/m^3$) compared to the initial values before application of MPPT (0.72 mW and $4.79mW/m^3$).

  • In this paper, a new single-phase utility-interactive inverter system for residential power generation with fuel cell is proposed. The proposed inverter system is not only capable of working in both stand-alone and grid-connected mode, but also ensures smooth and automatic transfer between the two modes of operation. The proposed control method has little steady-state error and good transient response characteristic. Also, the control method can be implemented using low-cost, fixed point DSP since it has simpler structure, smaller amount of calculation, and smaller number of sensors. The controller for the proposed utility-interactive inverter system is described, and the validity is verified through simulation and experiment.

  • The effects of additive such as $H_2O_2$ in KOH electrolyte solution for the Aluminum/Air fuel cell were investigated with regard to electric power characteristics. The power generated by a Al/Air fuel cell was controlled by the KOH electrolyte solution and $H_2O_2$ depolarizer. Higher cell power was achieved when higher KOH electrolyte concentration and higher $H_2O_2$ depolarizer amount. The maximum power was increased by the increase amount $H_2O_2$ depolarizer, it was found that $H_2O_2$ depolarizer inhibits the generation of hydrogen and the polarization effect was reduced as a result. Internal resistance analysis was employed to elucidate the maximum power variation. Higher internal resistance created internal potential differences that drive current dissipating energy. In order to improve the output characteristics of the Al/Air fuel cell, it is thought to be desirable to increase the KOH electrolyte concentration and increase the $H_2O_2$ addition amounts.

  • The development of fuel cell hybrid power system, as a next generation power system to promote clean energy which will mitigate the continued global warming, has demonstratd a significant progress in passenger vehicle applications. Also, in case of railway vehicles in non-electrified railway lines, the adoption of fuel cell hybrid power system is being studied among well-known manufacturers. This paper introduces both the configuration and the control strategy of fuel cell hybrid power system to apply to a light electronic railway vehicle having a repeated driving pattern of acceleration, coasting and deceleration. The simulation results demonstrate the viability of the proposed power system design and its control strategy.

  • Korea's RPS, which requires that power generation companies obtain a minimum percentage of their generation by using renewable energy, will take effect in 2012. Based on the first-year law enforcement, generation companies have to satisfy 2% of RPS compliance ratio in 2012. Then, the required RPS compliance ratio will increase up to 10% in 2022. Thus generation companies need to construct power plants that utilize various types of renewable energy sources such as PV and wind power. This work is aimed to analyze the cost of such a renewable power source in terms of capital cost, capacity factor, and fuel cost. We provide the analytical expectation on the renewable power generation cost of 2012 focusing on PV, onshore/offshore wind, fuel cell, and IGCC, which are focused by government policy.

  • The Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has been developing planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and power systems for combined heat and power (CHP) units. The R&D work includes solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) materials investigation, design and fabrication of single cells and stacks, and kW class SOFC CHP system development. Anode supported cells composed of Ni-YSZ/FL/YSZ/LSCF were enlarged up to $15{\times}15\;cm^2$ and stacks were manufactured using $10{\times}10\;cm^2$ cells and metallic interconnects such as ferritic stainless steel. The first-generation system had a 37-cell stack and an autothermal reformer for use with city gas. The system showed maximum stack power of about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ and was able to recover heat of $0.57{\sim}1.2\;kW_{th}$ depending on loaded current by making hot water. The second-generation system was composed of an improved 48-cell stack and a prereformer (or steam reformer). The thermal management subsystem design including heat exchangers and insulators was also improved. The second-generation system was successfully operated without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ with hydrogen and $1.2\;kW_{e,DC}$ with city. The system also recuperated heat of about $1.1\;kW_{th}$ by making hot water. Recently KEPRI manufactured a 2kW class SOFC stack and a system by scaling up the second-generation 1kW system and will develop a 5kW class CHP system by 2010.
