  • An experimental study on a fuel-rich gas generator was carried out. Thirty seven double-swirl injectors with recess number of 1.5 were distributed and installed in the injector head, which significantly influences the combustion performance. In the paper, the characteristics of combustion stability are inspected by the parametric varations such as changing length and diameter of a combustion chamber and installing a turbulence ring. The experimental results show that as a resonant frequency took place in a high region, the amplitude of the dynamic pressure generally diminished, however, the combustion instability could not be suppressed perfectly.

  • The supercavitating rocket torpedo SHKVAL was analyzed in view of its system operation procedure and the structure and performance. 3 different propulsion systems installed in SHKVAL were 1st solid rocket booster for launch and acceleration, 2nd solid rocket booster for further acceleration, and Mg-rich Hydroreactive fuel rocket propulsion system for cruising. The gas generator used to help generate the supercavitation bubble was composed of a solid propellant gas generator and a hydroreactive fuel one. The structures and their performance were described based on as much knowledge as we have obtained from cumulative information and up-to-date analysis.

  • A study of gas generator Fuel-Rich propellant for air-breathing propulsion system was performed in this paper. General solid propellant comprises a mean of 60% or more oxidizing agents. but, to develop the fuel-rich solid propellant increased the content of the metal fuel and reduced the content of the oxidizing agents by approximately 30%. Very high amount of heat per volume of fuel into the metal having the Boron was used. Amorphous Boron Powder was applied to propellant as beads type and it allowed to design more amount of metal fuel in the fuel-rich propellant. And the Combustion characteristics and properties of fuel-rich solid propellant according to the Boron-bead sizes were confirmed.

  • Combustion Chamber Test Facility (CCTF) to be constructed in Naro Space Center for re-burning the fuel-rich gas of gas generator have afterburner system. The afterburner system is supplied the Oxygon ($O_2$) gas and Methane ($CH_4$) gas to reduced the harmful exhaust gas. The detailed design for the planned CCTF afterburner system is simulated and analysed by AMESim program through the all of gas supply system components. Afterburner system is performed to verify the pipe size, orifice diameter, and gas supply conditions according to the total gas consumption from analysis of gas supply system.

  • The fuel processor for the portable fuel cell includes multi-step processes consisting of hydrogen generator, heat generator and several CO clean-up stages. One of requirements of the fuel processor for portable fuel cell system is a rapid start-up time. Especially, the warm-up time for WGS reactor is crucial factors for total start-up time. In this paper, active heating protocol, which is the heating protocol of WGS reactor supplied by the oxidation of CO rich reformate in the initial stage, is used for a rapid start-up. The air stream fed to the inlet of WGS reactor rapidly oxidize the CO rich reformate in the WGS reactor. Therefore, CO concentration in reformate quickly stabilized at the desired concentration without CO surges.

  • Firing test of the fuel grain for solid fuel ramjet with additives and ignition support material was conducted. Fuel grain consist of HTPB mixed with AP particle 15 wt.%, Boron particle 5 wt.%. To cause the short ignition delay, ignition support consist of $NC/BKNO_3$ and composite propellant was coated to the fuel grain. An oxidant gas having a controlled temperature, pressure and oxygen composition close to the air condition in the ramjet combustor was supplied using the Ethanol blended $H_2O_2$ gas generator. Gas was set to flow at a mass flow rate of 150 g/s and mass flux of $200kg/m^2s$ in the grain port. Through the test, ignition support operated well and ignition delay of 0.5. During the test, stable chamber pressure with 8 bar and high combustion efficiency of 0.86 was confirmed.

  • The results of combustion performance test of fuel-rich gas generator with dual swirl injectors are described. By changing simulating duct and recess number(RN) of the injectors, we inspected whether the combustion instability took place. When the injectors of RN = 0.5 were used, combustion instabilities could be reduced using the simulating duct. However, the effect of the simulating duct on the gas generator with the injectors of RN = 1.5 was not significant.

  • This paper describes the results of combustion performance test of fuel-rich gas generator(GG) using LOx and kerosene as propellant at off-design conditions. The chamber pressure is thought to be a function of O/F ratio and total propellant mass flow rate. The test shows that the spatial temperature deviation at the exit of gas generator remains within 7.5K and that the average gas temperature at the exit is a function of propellant O/F ratio. The results of firing test of gas generator at off-design conditions, especially the relation between gas temperature and O/F ratio, can provide useful data for the design of future gas generator and for the development of low-O/F ratio reaction analysis code.

  • After-burner test facility for gas generators of 75 tonf class liquid rocket engines was designed, which was verified by the facility certification test of the Combustion Chamber Test Facility(CCTF). The purpose of the certification test of the after-burner test facility is to verify the combustion stability of gas torches equipped in the gas generator and the after-burner test facility by using methane and oxygen gases. In the case of the autonomous test, the supply system provided steadily methane and oxygen gases to the after-burner system without pressure drop. The combustion pressure of the gas torch approached the design requirement. In the case of the coupled test, the gas generator ignition and the fuel-rich exhaust gas combustion were successfully carried out, leading to the verification of the test facility.

  • An acoustic analysis of a fuel-rich gas generator for the drive of a turbopump in a liquid rocket engine has been performed and the length of a simulating duct has been determined by comparing the resonant frequency of unstable acoustic modes to simulate an actual flight model gas generator. To simulate more realistically, a realistic short-length simulating duct has been determined by considering 1 or 2 wavelength of the unstable modes. Duct-length adjustment to turbopump can be a method to suppress a combustion instability problem by decoupling of acoustic mode and combustion characteristics. This method has been set up and validated with acoustic analysis and hot firing tests.
