  • A heat transfer model of the intake valve in a spark ignition engine is presented, which is calibrated with a number of the valve temperature profiles measured during engine warm-up for the gaseous fuel(propane). The valve is divided into four identical elements for which the assumption of lumped thermal mass is applied. The calibration is made so that the difference between the measued and simulated valve temperatures becomes minimal. Then the model is applied to the cases of the liquid fuel(indolene) to estimate the amount of the liquid fuel vaporized from the intake valve by assuming that fuel evaporation accounts for the deficit of the heat balance budget. The results of the model show quantitative contribution of each heat transfer source to the heat balance. The behavior of the calculated mass fraction of the fuel vaporized from the intake valve explains how the liquid fuel evaporate during engine warm-up. The mass fraction at warmed-up condition is closely related with the fraction directly targeted on the valve back by the fuel spray geometry.

  • Two different types the CANDU fuel bundles hue been modeled for the ASSERT-IV code subchannel analysis. From calculated values of mixture enthalpy and void paction distributions in the fuel bundles, it is found that net buoyancy effect is pronounced in the central region of the DUPIC fuel bundle when compared with the standard CANDU fuel bundle. It is also found that the central region of the DUPIC fuel bundle can be cooled more efficiently than that of the standard fuel bundle. From calculated mixture enthalpy distribution at the exit of fuel channel, it is found that the mixture enthalpy and void fraction can be highest in the peripheral region of the DUPIC fuel bundle. On the other hand, the enthalpy and the void fraction were found to be highest in the central region of the standard CANDU fuel bundle at the exit of the fuel channel. This study shows that the subchannel analysis is very useful assessing thermal behavior of the fuel bundle that could be used in CANDU reactors.

  • Breakup and ignition of single droplet were experimentally investigated using two independent Nd-YAG lasers. The emulsified fuel was made from n-dodecane and water while varying the relative volumetric fraction. As a result of visualization, breakup and ignition behaviors were dependent on the fraction. Luminosity from the secondary droplets increased as the water fraction decreased. Ignition did not occur below 80% of the n-dodecane fraction.

  • This study is intended to check the flame temperature to raise in burning grade C heavy fuel oil and emulsion fuel oil in a boiler and to measure the concentration of Dry Shoot(DS) and Soluble Organic Fraction(SOF) after collecting the Particulate Matters (PM). The flames temperature in boiler was measured by burning grade C heavy oil and oil-water emulsion (C heavy oil $70\%\;and\;30\%$ of water) Combustion characteristics of two fuels was also compared by trapping particulate matters (PM) in exhaust gas and measuring the generated quantities of DS and SOF in fuel gas.

  • Fracture near the U-10Mo/cladding material interface impacts fuel service life. In this work, a mesoscale stress model is developed with the fuel foil considered as a porous medium having gas bubbles and bearing bubble pressure and surface tension. The models for the evolution of bubble volume fraction, size and internal pressure are also obtained. For a U-10Mo/Al monolithic fuel plate under location-dependent irradiation, the finite element simulation of the thermo-mechanical coupling behavior is implemented to obtain the bubble distribution and evolution behavior together with their effects on the mesoscale stresses. The numerical simulation results indicate that higher macroscale tensile stresses appear close to the locations with the maximum increments of fuel foil thickness, which is intensively related to irradiation creep deformations. The maximum mesoscale tensile stress is more than 2 times of the macroscale one on the irradiation time of 98 days, which results from the contributions of considerable volume fraction and internal pressure of bubbles. This study lays a foundation for the fracture mechanism analysis and development of a fracture criterion for U-10Mo monolithic fuels.

  • The effect of fuel mixing on soot structure with methane, ethane, and propane to ethylene-base counterflow diffusion flames has been investigated by measuring the volume fraction, number density, and particle size of soot by adopting the light extinction/scattering techniques. The experimental result showed that the mixing of ethane and propane in ethylene diffusion flame increased soot volume fraction while the mixing of methane decreased. As compare to the ethylene-base flame, the diameters of soot particles for mixture flames are slightly smaller. While the soot number densities for the mixture flames are much higher. Thus, the increase in the soot volume fraction can be attributed to the appreciably increased soot number density by the fuel mixing.

  • Residual gas acts as a diluent which results in reducing the in-cylinder temperature as well as the flame speed, significantly affecting fuel economy, NOx emissions and combustion stability. Therefore it is important to determine the residual gas fraction as a function of the engine operating parameters accurately. However, the determination of the residual gas fraction is very sophisticated due to the unsteady state of induction and exhaust process. There has been little work toward the development of a generally applicable model for quantitative predictions of residual gas fraction. In this paper, a simple model for calculating the residual gas fraction in SI engines was suggested. The amount of fresh air was evaluated through AFR and fuel consumption. After this, from the intake temperature and pressure, the amount of total cylinder-charging gas was estimated. The residual gas fraction was derived by comparing the total charging and fresh air. This results coincide with measured EGR value very well.

  • The effects of NOx reduction by advanced fuel staging in a small scale combustor (6.6 kWT) have been investigated using propane gas flames laden with ammonia as fuel-nitrogen. The variables which had the greatest influence on NOx reduction were temperature, reducing stoichiometry (relate to main combustion zone stoichiometry, air fraction and reburning fuel fraction) and residence time of reducing zone. NOx reduction was best at the reburning zone temperature of above 1,000 ℃ and reburning zone stoichiometry was 0.85. In terms of residence time of the reburning zone, NOx reduction was effective when burnout air was injected at the point where the reburning zone had been already established. In the advanced fuel staging NOx reduction was relatively large at the burning of higher Fuel-N concentration in the fuel. Under optimum reburning conditions, fuel nitrogen content had a relatively minor impact on reburning efficiency.

  • The main purpose of this study is to provide basic information of droplet soot generation of decane fuel. To achieve this, this paper presents the experimental results on the decane droplet combustion conducted under various ambient pressure($P_{amb}$), and oxygen concentration($O_2$) conditions. At the same time, the experimental study was conducted in terms of soot volume fraction($f_v$) and its maximum value. Also, visualization of single fuel droplet was conducted by high resolution CCD camera and ambient pressure($P_{amb}$) and oxygen concentration($O_2$) was changed by control system. It was revealed that higher ambient pressure($P_{amb}$), and oxygen concentration($O_2$) enhanced the soot generation and improved the maximum soot volume fraction( $f_v$).
