Diesel engines have low specific fuel consumption, but high particulate emissions, mainly soot. Diesel soot is suspected to have significant effects on the health of living beings and might also affect global warming. Hence stringent measures have been put in place in a number of countries and will be even stronger in the near future. Diesel engines require either advanced integrated exhaust after treatment systems or modified engine models to meet the statutory norms. Experimental analysis to study the emission characteristics is a time consuming affair. In such situations, the real picture of engine control can be obtained by the modeling of trend prediction. In this article, an effort has been made to predict emissions smoke and NO$_{x}$ using cylinder combustion derived parameters and diesel particulate filter data, with artificial neural network techniques in MATLAB environment. The model is based on three layer neural network with a back propagation learning algorithm. The training and test data of emissions were collected from experimental set up in the laboratory for different loads. The network is trained to predict the values of emission with training values. Regression analysis between test and predicted value from neural network shows least error. This approach helps in the reduction of the experimentation required to determine the smoke and NO$_{x}$ for the catalyst coated filters.
Purpose: Because of the growing concern over fossil fuel use and increasing demand for greenhouse gas emission reduction since the 1990s, the building energy analysis field has produced various types of methods, which are being applied more often and broadly than ever. A lot of research products have been actively proposed in the area of the building energy simulation for over 50 years around the world. However, in the last 20 years, there have been only a few research cases where the trend of building energy analysis is examined, estimated or compared. This research aims to investigate a trend of the building energy analysis by focusing on methodology and characteristics of each method. Method: The research papers addressing the building energy analysis are classified into two types of method: engineering analysis and algorithm estimation. Especially, EPG(Energy Performance Gap), which is the limit both for the existing engineering method and the single algorithm-based estimation method, results from comparing data of two different levels- in other words, real time data and simulation data. Result: When one or more ensemble algorithms are used, more accurate estimations of energy consumption and performance are produced, and thereby improving the problem of energy performance gap.

This study aims to investigate the impact of the High Pressure Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR-HP) on a large marine two-stroke engine performance parameters by employing thermodynamic modelling. A coupled model of the zero-dimensional type is extended to incorporate the modelling of the SCR-HP components and the Control Bypass Valve (CBV) block. This model is employed to simulate several scenarios representing the engine operation at both healthy and degraded conditions considering the compressor fouling and the SCR reactor clogging. The derived results are analysed to quantify the impact of the SCR-HP on the investigated engine performance. The SCR system pressure drop and the cylinder bypass valve flow cause an increase of the engine Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (SFOC) in the range 0.3-2.77 g/kWh. The thermal inertia of the SCR-HP is mainly attributed to the SCR reactor, which causes a delayed turbocharger response. These effects are more pronounced at low engine loads. This study supports the better understanding of the operating characteristics of marine two-stroke diesel engines equipped with the SCR-HP and quantification of the impact of the components degradation on the engine performance.

Since two oil shocks in 1970s, all of engine makers have persevered in their efforts to reduce specific fuel consumption and to increase engine power rate as much as possible in marine diesel engines. As a result, the maximum pressure in cylinders of these engines has been continuously increased. It causes direct axial vibration. The axial stiffness of crank shaft is low compared to old types of engine models by increasing the stroke/bore ratio and its major critical speed might occur within engine operation range. An axial damper, therefore, needs to be installed in order to reduce the axial vibration amplitude of the crankshaft. Usually the main critical speed of axial vibration for the propulsion shafting system with a 4-8 cylinder engine exists near the maximum continuous revolution(MCR). In this case, when the damping coefficient of the damper is increased within the allowance of the structural strength, its stiffness coefficient is also increased. Therefore, the main critical speed of axial vibration can be moved beyond the MCR. It has the same function as a conventional detuner. However, in the case of a 9-12 cylinder engine, the main critical speed of axial vibration for the propulsion shafting system exists below the MCR and thus the critical speed cannot be moved beyond the MCR by using an axial damper. In this case, the damping coefficient of an axial damper should be adjusted by considering the range of engine revolution, the location and vibration amplitude of the critical speed, the fore and aft vibration of the hull super structure. It needs to clarify the dynamic characteristics of the axial vibration damper to control the axial vibration appropriately. Therefore authors suggest the calculation method to analyse the dynamic characteristics of axial vibration damper. To confirm the calculation method proposed in this paper, it is applied to the propulsion shafting system of the actual ships and satisfactory results are obtained.

In this study, a thermoelectric module (TEM) and a diesel engine were modeled using 1-D commercial software AMESim, and the performance of the TEM was evaluated when the engine was operated under the NEDC driving cycle. The goal of TEM modeling was to investigate not only the waste heat recovery (WHR) rate and energy converting efficiency, but also the heat transfer rate by taking the materials characteristics into account. In addition, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) was designed, and it was found that the waste heat recovery with TEM affects the activation of DOC and alters engine exhaust composition. The simulation indicated that the WHR using TEM is beneficial for decreasing the fuel consumption of vehicles, but the reduction in the exhaust temperature affects the activation of DOC, resulting in an approximately 14% increase in CO and HC emissions. Therefore, the effect of waste heat recovery on the automotive emission characteristics must be considered in the development of automotive engine WHR systems.
Wheel bearings are important automotive parts that bear the vehicle weight and translate rotation motion; in addition, their seals are components that prevent grease leakage and foreign material from entering from the outside of the bearings. Recently, as the need for electric vehicles and eco-friendly vehicles has been emerging, the reduction in fuel consumption and $CO_2$ emissions are becoming the most important issues for automobile manufacturers. In the case of wheel bearings, seals are a key part of drag torque. In this study, we investigate the prediction of the drag torque taking into consideration the hyperelastic and viscoelastic material properties of automotive wheel bearing seals. Numerical analysis based on the finite element method is conducted for the deformation analyses of the seals. To improve the reliability of the rubber seal analysis, three types of rubber material properties are considered, and analysis is conducted using the hyperelastic material properties. Viscoelastic material property tests are also conducted. Deformation analysis considering the hyperelastic and viscoelastic material properties is performed, and the effects of the viscoelastic material properties are compared with the results obtained by the consideration of the hyperelastic material properties. As a result of these analyses, the drag torque is 0.29 Nm when the hyperelastic characteristics are taken into account, and the drag torque is 0.27 Nm when both the hyperelastic and viscoelastic characteristics are taken into account. Therefore, it is determined that the analysis considering both hyperelastic and viscoelastic characteristics must be performed because of its reliability in predicting the drag torque of the rubber seals.

In the case of launch vehicles using liquid fuel, natural frequency changes due to fuel consumption after launch, and a modal test is essential to investigate its effect. However, when relying on modal test to characterize the free vibration characteristics, the testing time is excessively increased and accuracy is reduced. Therefore, this paper suggests a modal test method with finite element analysis to overcome these drawbacks. A cylindrical structure filled with liquid are considered as a study model, and modal tests and finite element analyses are performed. The modal tests are conducted by an impulsive method using an impact hammer and accelerometers. Through the comparison of the modal test and the finite element analysis results, the validity of the proposed modal test method is verified. In addition, the free vibration characteristics and the tendency for the cylindrical structure according to the liquid filled ratio were investigated.

The reduction of CO2 emission has been discussed in the Marine Environment Protection committee in the International Maritime Organization as the biggest causes of GHG for the purpose of indexing CO2 amounts released into the atmosphere from ships. Accordingly, various methods including the change in the hull design to improve energy efficiency, the coating development to reduce friction resistances, the additives development for improving thermal efficiency in an engine, the low-speed operation to reduce fuel consumptions, and etc. have been applied. The main engine of a ship is an electronic engine for improving the efficiency of the whole load area. However, marine generator engines still use mechanical drive engines in intake, exhaust, and fuel injection valve drive cams. In addition, most of marine generator engines in ships apply a part-load operation of less then 80% due to an overload protection system. Therefore, marine auxiliary diesel engine set at 100% load is necessary to readjust in order to efficient operation because of part-load operation. The objective of this study is to report the results of the part-load fuel consumption improvement by injection timing readjust to identifying the operational characteristics of a marine generator engine currently operated in a ship.

High temperature electrolysis is a promising technology to produce massively hydrogen using renewable and nuclear energy. Solid oxide fuel cell materials are candidates as the components of steam electrolysers. However, the polarization characteristics of the typical electrode materials during the electrolysis have not been intensively investigated. In this study, NiO electrode was deposited on YSZ electrolyte by spin coat process and firing at $1300^{\circ}C$. Pt electrode was applied on the other side of the electrolyte to compare the polarization characteristics with those by NiO during electrolysis. The $H_2$ evolution rate was also monitored by measuring the electromotive force of Lambda probe and calculated by thermodynamic consideration. At low current density, Pt showed lower cathodic polarization and thus higher current efficiency than Ni, but the oxidation of Ni into NiO caused the increase of anodic resistance with increasing current density. High overpotential induced high power consumption to produce hydrogen by electrolysis.

Recently constructed ships are equipped with high efficiency propeller for low fuel consumption and comfortable operation. Based on the torsional vibration analysis of the shaft system of the high efficiency propeller, using the propeller damping method considering the characteristics of previous propeller designs, a considerable amount of analysis errors are found to be generated. These errors are expected to increase as the development of high efficiency vibration propellers continues. In this paper, errors in torsional vibration analysis, in accordance with various propeller damping methods, are reviewed. In addition, a propeller damping method suitable for use at present is suggested by reviewing the comparison results of analysis and measurement values according to the propeller damping methods for vessels adopting the high efficiency direct-coupled propeller with 10MW class.
