  • This study aims to clarify the relationship between family policy and children's quality of life through an international comparison and to determine which family policy factors contribute to children's quality of life. The research question is "How can family policies be combined to improve children's quality of life in terms of health and economy?" It includes nine categories of family policies related to money, service, and leave. Measures of children's quality of life include low birth weight, infant mortality, and child poverty. Using the OECD Family Database, and the OECD Child Well-being Data, fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparison Analysis (fsQCA) was used among 20 OECD countries. Combinations of family policies significant to the children's quality of life were derived from the results. This study contributes to the literature by revealing the effectiveness of states' investment in family policy. In addition, the study indicates that since family policies interact with each other, those policies combine to improve children's quality of life.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find out the set of the factors influencing on the successful voluntary consolidation among local governments. This paper considers the voluntary consolidation as a kind of coordination mechanism and institutional collective action process between local governments, and identifies the configurations of the causal factors influencing the voluntary consolidations by applying the fuzzy-set analysis. It is found that the sets of the causal factors which include political and economic homogeneity factors in the region, and interlocal political, economic, and social homogeneity factors, and prior consolidation experience between regions have positive effects on the consolidations. Also, it turns out that interlocal homogeneity and conformity between regions should be considered significantly for institutionalization which supports the consolidation between local entities.

  • For analyzing the performance determinants of ODA projects in a technical and vocational education and training, this research analyzed the performance determinants of effectiveness representing the direct benefit and impact representing the long-term development effects of ODA project using FsQCA. As a result, the effectiveness of ODA project is achieved when relevance, sustainability and impact are high, or relevance, impact and efficiency are high. The impact of ODA project is achieved when relevance, sustainability and effectiveness are high, or relevance, effectiveness and efficiency are high. Two solutions for achieving effectiveness and two solutions for achieving impact show equifinality. The core factors for achieving effectiveness are relevance and impact, and the core factors for achieving impact are relevance and effectiveness. Also sustainability and efficiency are substitutability. A single causal variable can not have an effect on the ODA performance, but combined more than three causal variables can have an effect on the ODA performance. Therefore this research verified that collectives of causal variables rather than single causal variable should be considered to achieve the performance of ODA project in technical and vocational education and training.

  • Despite high uncertainty on financial return, firms have continuously increased their investment on technologies because they recognize the potential value of technology investment in terms of enhancing operational efficiency and sustaining competitive advantage. Notably, an individual technology investment pattern or strategy within an industry may ultimately lead to significant differences in business performance. Hence, we first categorized technology investment into traditional research and development investment and information technology investment. Afterward, we examined the effects of each pattern with combination of the two types of technology investment on business performance according to firm size and position in the supply chain through fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis. Data collected from 562 manufacturing firms in Korea were used in the analysis. Results showed that large-sized firms were slightly affected with microscopic patterns in their technology investments, whereas small firms were highly affected with their technology investment patterns and their positions in the supply chain. The findings implied that a small enterprise requires an appropriate technology investment strategy to achieve successful business outcomes.

  • This study aims to suggest a new perspective that can account for variations in fertility rates across OECD countries. Most previous literature has highlighted the influence of government policies on fertility rates. This study focuses the role of job strain, unequal division of household labor, and life satisfaction on fertility rates. These factors are related to work-life balance, and play a crucial role in understanding variations in fertility rates across OECD countries. Using fuzzy set qualitative comparative research analysis (fsQCA), this study tests whether fertility rates can be explained by differences in the levels of job strain, gender equality at home, and life satisfaction across countries. The results are as follows: First, high fertility-countries show low levels of job strain, equal division of household labor, high levels of life satisfaction, and high levels of GDP. Second, a high level of GDP is not crucial for achieving high fertility rates. This study suggests that changes in working conditions and organizational culture are required to increase the fertility rate in Korea, since this can influence work-life balance, life satisfaction and equal division of household labor.

  • This study aims (1) to identify whether real terms of imprisonment for sexual offenders against children are different between the first trial and appeal trial in 16 cases and (2) to assess which sentencing factors such as history of sexual crime of perpetrator, forgiveness of children, regretfulness of perpetrator, power of perpetrator, and relationship of perpetrator and victim influence sentencing period of imprisonment in the first and appeal trials, respectively. This study used cases which were prosecuted for sexual crimes against children since the protection act on the children and juveniles from sexual abuse was enacted in 2000. The target cases of the study include 8 first trials and 8 appeal cases which were appealed to the Supreme Court between 2000 and 2015. Result condition is the real term of imprisonment. Cause conditions include sentencing factors such as history of sexual crime, regretfulness, and power of perpetrator, forgiveness of child, and relationship between offender and victim. We employed Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) for data analysis. We found that there are sentences in the first trial with lower terms than appeal trial regarding child sexual crimes. In addition, we found that (1) power of perpetrator and forgiveness of victim significantly influenced sentencing periods of imprisonment at levels of courts; (2) cause condition considered as comparatively more important in the first trial was regretfulness of perpetrator(but not in the appeal trial); and (3) relationship of perpetrator and child was not important in sentencing for sexual crime at both levels of trials.
