Risk Factors for Suicidal Ideation among Middle Class Korean: Focusing on Psychosocial Comparison - An Analysis of a Nationwide Survey of the 8th Korea Health Panel Data (중산층 한국인의 생애주기별 자살 충동경험과 위험요인: 비교의식과 관련된 사회심리적 특성을 중심으로 - 8차 한국의료패널 자료분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence and risk factors of suicidal ideation among middle class Korean. Methods: Cross sectional study was designed for secondary data analysis. From the 8th Korea Health Panel survey (2008~2013), a total of 6,037 data was drawn and analyzed by developmental stage using descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, $x^2$ test, and logistic regression analysis. Results: Across all age groups, high physical-mental stress, frustration, anxiety about the future and low self-perceived health status or social class were found to be the risk factors of suicidal ideation. Peer-compared subjective health status and frustration significantly influenced the adolescents. The young adults'suicidal ideation was mainly influenced by physical and mental stress, frustration and absence of economic activity. For the middle-aged, physical and mental stress, frustration, future anxiety, low peer-compared subjective health status were found to be the major influencing factors. The predominant risk factors for the elderly were frustration and low peer-compared subjective health status. Conclusion: Making comparisons to others significantly influence suicidal ideation throughout all life cycles. Improvement of mental health and suicide prevention can be enhanced by avoiding negative comparison to others.

The Influence of Negative Emotions on Customer Contribution to Organizational Innovation in an Online Brand Community (온라인 브랜드 커뮤니티 내 부정적 감정들이 기업 혁신을 위한 고객 기여에 미치는 영향)

  • In recent years, online brand communities, whereby firms and customers interact freely, are emerging trend, because customers' opinions collected in these communities can help firms to achieve their innovation effectively. In this study, we examined whether customer opinions containing negative emotions have influence on their adoption for organizational innovation. To that end, we firstly classified negative emotions into five categories of detailed negative emotions such as Fear, Anger, Shame, Sadness, and Frustration. Then, we developed a lexicon for each category of negative emotions, using WordNet and SentiWordNet. From 81,543 customer opinions collected from MyStarbucksIdea.com which is Starbucks' brand community, we extracted terms that belong to each lexicon. We conducted an experiment to examine whether the existence, frequency and strength of terms with negative emotions in each category affect the adoption of customer opinions for organizational innovation. In the experiment, we statistically verified that there is a positive relationship between customer ideas containing negative emotions and their adoption for innovation. Especially, Frustration and Sadness out of the five emotions are significantly influential to organizational innovation.

Restitution as the Consequence of Frustration under English Law and Korean Law in a Comparative Perspective

  • Purpose - This paper examines the admissibility of restitution as the legal consequence where a contract is frustrated under the Law of Reform (Frustrated Contracts) Act 1943 in comparison with Korean Civil Code (KCC). In order to provide practical guidelines and advice regarding choice of and application of law for contracting parties in international trade, the paper comparatively evaluates requirements and the scope of restitution under the Act 1943 and KCC. Design/methodology - This paper executes a comparative study to analyze whether the parties may claim restitution of money paid or non-money benefit obtained before or after the time of discharge under English law and KCC. To achieve the purpose, it focuses on the identifying characteristics of each statute, thereby providing guidelines to overcome difficulties in legal application and interpretation as to restitution as the consequence of frustration. Findings - Under English law, the benefit may be restituted according to Art 1943 or the common law rule, mistake of fact or law. Under the KCC, restitution is considered based on the principle of the obligation to recover the original obtained regardless of the time when the benefit is conferred. Whilst Act 1943 does not require careful analysis of the grounds of restitution, requirements to justify restitution according to the principle of unjust enrichment, mistake of fact or law, and the KCC should be met. Meanwhile, the KCC may provide more opportunities to award restitution because it does not require the burden of proof related to the defendant's good faith, unlike the principle of unjust enrichment. Originality/value - Where the contract is frustrated by the effect of COVID-19, one legal issue is a consequence of frustration. Therefore, this paper analyzes requirements and the scope of restitution under English law as compared with the KCC in a timely manner. It provides contracting parties with practical guidelines and advice to reduce unpredictability when they choose the governing law in a contract.

Children's Bullying, Victimization and Teacher's Reports of Problem Behaviors and Competencies (아동의 또래 괴롭힘 가해 및 피해경험과 교사보고에 따른 문제행동과 유능성 : 학년과 성별 비교)

  • Data were collected from teacher reports and from 529 1st to 6th grade students through questionnaires. Bullying was higher among boys than girls. Victimization was higher in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th grade boys than girls. Acting out was highest in 2nd graders and lowest in 3rd graders. Shy-anxiousness was highest in 4th and 6th graders and lowest in 1st and 3rd graders. Learning problems were lowest among 3rd graders. Competencies were higher in 1st and 2nd grades. Boys had more problem behaviors; girls showed better competencies. Bullying was positively related to acting out, and negatively related to frustration tolerance and task orientation. Victimization was positively related to shy-anxiousness and learning problems, and negatively related to frustration tolerance, assertive social skills and task orientation.

  • The purpose of this study was to elicit the multi-dimensions of retirement expectations, and explore sub-factors of retirement expectations which predict the possibility of worker's participation to each pre-retirement planning programs. The major findings were as follows: first, this study shows that there are four sub-factors; Imposed frustration, New beginning, Transition to rest, Continuing. And there was a significant difference in retirement expectation according to sex, age, income, and health status. Second, the major affecting factors on participation in pre-retirement planning programs were sex, age, job, educational attainment, and health status. Third, those who have retirement expectations of 'Imposed frustration' tend to attend re-employment, leisure, and health education. Those who have retirement expectations of 'Transition to rest' tend to attend re-employment, inauguration education. And those who have retirement of 'Continuing' tend to attend leisure education.

  • Let G be a graph and k is a positive integer. Hammack and Livesay in [The inner power of a graph, Ars Math. Contemp., 3 (2010), no. 2, 193-199] introduced a new graph operation $G^{(k)}$, called the $k^{th}$ inner power of G. In this paper, it is proved that if G is bipartite then $G^{(2)}$ has exactly three components such that one of them is bipartite and two others are isomorphic. As a consequence the edge frustration index of $G^{(2)}$ is computed based on the same values as for the original graph G. We also compute the first and second Zagreb indices and coindices of $G^{(2)}$.

The Subjective Burden of Family Caregivers with Schizophrenics and Its Predictors (정신분열병 환자 가족보호자의 주관적 부담과 그 결정요소)

  • Experiences of the subjective burden and its determinants were analyzed in a sample of 110 primary family caregivers of adult schizophrenic patients. The subjects reported varying amount of subjective burden and its mean score was 17.84 that meant considerably high level of subjective burden. Reports of subjective burden were high in the items of 'pity', 'frustration and resentment', 'regret'. The result of factor analysis revealed that subjective burden consisted of four factors such as 'hopelessness', 'frustration and resentment', 'fear', and 'pity and anxiety'. The results about the determining variables of subjective burden indicated that the prognosis of patient, perceived stigma, the number of previous hospitalization, the availability of secondary caregiver, primary caregiver's age, and family income were predictive of primary caregivers' subjective burden. The result examining the multivariate relationship among subjective burden, stressors, social support, family demographic and socioeconomic characteristics revealed that the more important determinants of subjective burden were the prognosis of patient, perceived stigma, and the number of previous hospitalization, Implications for intervention to help with primary caregivers' subjective burden were discussed.

A Study of the Influences that Visons have on School Life (비전이 학교생활에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This study is on visions having influence on school life to analyze differences between students who have clear visions and those who do not during school life. In order to achieve the goal of this study, the influence which visions have on school life has been analyzed by measuring attitudes towards school life (satisfaction, a sense of belonging, passion, and frustration) depending on students who have visions or those who do not. This analysis shows that the more visions students have, the more satisfaction, a sense of belonging, and passion they have and the less frustration they have. Thus, visions have positive influence on school life and it is essential to reinforce education for students to have clear visions by opening camps to find visions and teaching how to find visions.

Experience of Depression regarding Psychosocial Factors in Middle-class Korea Workers: Comparison of Life Cycle Analysis (한국인 중산층 근로자의 사회심리적 요인에 따른 우울경험: 생애주기 별 비교분석)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify and compare the risk factors of depression among middle-class Korean workers. Methods: A cross sectional study was designed for secondary data analysis. From the 8th Korean Medical Panel Survey (2008~2013), a total of 3,056 data was drawn and analyzed. With SPSS version 24, a developmental stage comparison, with the stage being young adults (20~39), middle-aged adults (40~64), and older adults (65+) were conducted. Frequency, percentage, 𝑥2 test and logistic regression analysis were statistical tools used to analyze the data. Results: In all developmental groups, experience of frustration was found to be a common risk factor of depression. Stress from excessive task, peer-compared subjective health status, and self-perceived social class were risk factors of depression in the young adults and the middle-aged adults. Anxiety for the future significantly influenced depression in the middle-aged adults and older adults. Conclusion: Experience of frustration was a major risk factor of depression among Korean middle-class workers. Interventions to reduce depression need to be developed focusing on the specific risk factors by developmental stages such as experience of frustration, stress from task burden, poor peer-compared subjective health status and anxiety for the future.
